Starting point is 00:00:00 Hi Alan. How are you? How are you? I feel like I don't remember how to do this and we don't have a snappy intro. How are you? Are you doing well? I'm feeling blessed, you know? Just hashtag blessed. So blessed. It's not often that we do mockumentaries.
Starting point is 00:00:29 No. Although we've actually done a couple, haven't we? What's another mockumentary then? What we do in the shadows? Oh, true, true. I'm just think of that as hilarious. Yeah. I feel like there was one other one. Best in Show. Uh-huh. Silence of the Life.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Or my favorite. Spinal Tap. Sure. A perfect film. I mean, there. It is the best of the mockumentaries. Oh, it's perfect. It's a perfect film.
Starting point is 00:00:54 Unfuck withable. This is also a mockumentary. Oh, by the way, this is a moral famuilance. th. th. this. this. this. this. this. this. this. this. this is. this is. But if you're not sure, you can just call him Katie's friend, that sign. And spell that for them? Kate? I'm yours to t Are we doing it? We've been doing it.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Gotcha. We're here to talk about Behind the Mask, the rise of Leslie Vernon. I had never heard of this movie before you told me about it. How did you hear about it? Let's see, I'm hearkening back to 2006. I think I was probably reading like Rue Morga magazine or something and they did like a write-up on it or something. And this had a theatrical release? I think limited would be a polite way of saying it. Yeah, yeah, I don't think it had a big theatrical release but uh, I remember watching it on DVD from Netflix. Oh, okay. Yeah. According to Wikipedia,
Starting point is 00:01:56 it made $69,000 of the box office. Nice. And the premise of the film is that it that it that it that it that it that it that it that it that it that it that it th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. th. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. th. th. th. th.. And the premise of the film is that it's a mockumentary about guy who purports to be basically like a supernatural serial killer. Like he's, I really love the intro of this where they're talking about Jason and Michael and Freddie Kruger because it's like, this movie presupposes that we live in a universe where those things are real. What I especially loved about it when they were like, and Chuckie. Yeah, right, that just gets thrown in later.
Starting point is 00:02:32 They're like no explanation of that. But I really liked that. We live in a universe where these things actually happened. Yeah. I like that. This is definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely definitely. This is definitely. This is definitely. This is definitely. This is definitely. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I, I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I that. This is definitely in the lineage of screen, where it's very meta-horrer, and it's very self-aware, and all that stuff. But because I think it was more comedic, they were able to kind of just be like, yeah, fuck it. We love this shit, like we're embracing it,
Starting point is 00:02:55 and having Robert Englund as Dr. Lumas, basically the Dr. Luma's character from from Halloween. Yeah. And Kane hotter like shows up as just like an angry neighbor earlier on in the movie. That's who that is. Okay and Zelda Rubinstein. Look them so old. She looks so rough. Pittsburgh's own. Yeah. This has has has clean. Yeah. This has has. Yeah. Yeah. This house. Yeah. He knows. He's run up his ass. I got to go down there and clean out of KK's. It's. It's back. It's. Yeah. Yeah. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It. It. It. He knows, he knows his, he knows his, he knows his, run up his ass. I gotta go down there and clean out a Kekas, I'll be back a little bit. And no, K'kos. So yeah, it's got just like these, like, you know, wonderful stars of like the genre that we love and, um, it's super meta without being sarcastic or like, the whole thing Yeah, and without belittling it in any way, yeah, yeah. Like I love the whole, so the whole thing is that he's training up to become a supernatural serial killer.
Starting point is 00:03:52 His backstory is that he killed his mother and stepfather or something and then the neighbor, the townspeople came and took him and threw him into the water. And that was the end of him. No one tho one no tho one no tho tho tho tho tho thin no tho thin no thin no thi no thi no thi. No one, no thi, no thi, no thi, no thi, no one, no one, no one, no one, no one, throw, thi, throw, throw, throw, throw, tho-a, tho-a, th. th. th. the, the, the, the, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thrown, thrown, theeeeeean, thrown, throwneeeeeeeeeeeeean, throwne, throwne, thin, thin, And that was the end of him. No one ever found his body though, right? So that's his like supernatural backstory. Right. And then we learn later that it is not his backstory. And what is his backstory? That he's just like a lunatic from an asylum somewhere who's wanted to do this the whole time. Yeah. But I, and like he has befriended uh, Eugene, who is Scott Wilson, fans of The Walking Dead, will know him. I felt like I knew him, but I didn't know from what, and it's not that. Yeah, he's been in a ton of stuff, but I think that's his most known thing at this point. He, Scott Wilson's character is a retired supernatural serial game.
Starting point is 00:04:40 And later on in the movie, it's kind of revealed that his wife is his final girl. Yeah, which is like happening simultaneously to like tailor our entry into the movie, the documentary filmmaker, like getting very close with Leslie. Yeah. Like you think they're gonna fuck. Yeah. It's distressing. For sure. But also Jamie and Eugene seem very happy. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, they're like super loving. Yeah. Very supportive. She's able to like talk him down from his rages and stuff. Yeah. It's also very bleak.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Marrying the person who tried to kill you. And probably killed all your friends. Yeah. For sure. A hundred percent killed. Yeah, like your librarian friend. Have you ever seen the French mockumentary Man Bites Dog? No, I have not.
Starting point is 00:05:32 I feel like this movie owes a lot to that movie because Man Bites Dog is basically a documentary film crew following a serial killer. Okay. And he's like yeah, you can see whatever I see. And they eventually become complicit in his crimes. Yeah. And it gets, like, it starts off and you're like, oh, this is funny and gross. Oh. Not a comedy.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Oh, no, no, no, no, no. It gets real, super, super, super, super, super, super. That's very French, though, isn't it? Yes. Very French, French, French, that that th French, th French, that was th French, th French, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. this is, th. this is, this is funny, this is funny, this is funny, this is funny, this is funny, this is funny, this is funny, this is funny, this is funny, this funny, this funny, this is funny, this is funny, this is funny. this is is is funny. this is is is is is is this is this is is this is. this is. this is. this is. this is. this is. this is. this is. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. this is funny. this is funny. this is funny. this is funny. this is funny. this is funny. this is funny. shocking cinema. But this movie like kind of has that same thing of like there's a point where he's like, all right I'm gonna start doing this, you guys can go or you can stay. Yeah, and the camera dudes are like, no this is cool. Yeah, they have no moral qualms at all about letting this happen or even participating in this. Yeah. And like there's the point where they were about to kill the librarian, or he was about to kill the librarian and Freddie Kruger shows up and they're shouting, I got an Ahab, I got an Ahab, and they're all
Starting point is 00:06:33 like jumping up and down and celebrating with him and you're like, where, how quick did you switch? I think that's why I don't remember this movie as being a comedy because there is this strong thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. the. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. th, th, th, th, th. th. th. thi, th. thi, thi, th. th. thi, th. thi, th. th. th. th. th, th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the, theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, thi, being a comedy because there is this strong twisted morality to it. Sure. That makes it very dark. Extremely dark. But then it's offset by these lines like where she's asking about his childhood house and she's like, oh, do you own this? And he's like, well, it's in a trust.
Starting point is 00:06:57 Oh, the good. Or it's like you can still hear my mother's body swinging in the trees. And then he's like, oh, I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. It's not tonight. It's another night. It's so funny. He is charming in a young Billy Bob Thornton way.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Yes, and he has not worked since this movie. He's like, thrown. Yeah, I was like, and that's it. It's crazy because the camera loves him, as we like to say in Hollywood. As our industry says, yeah, that's an industry term. But he's just like, he's super charming and you're like, you want to hear what he's going to say next. And like, he's this is the least believable news lady ever. It's like, she's just like a college kid, never mind, I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:07:50 Yeah, she's a grad student. Oh, this is perfectly rational. She looks like a child, too, which I think is part of it, because she's also like very small, she's very petite. Like the woman who plays Kelly is like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, a. the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. th. th. the the the the the and she's like five foot, which I think is like, I think it's supposed to make you feel like, you wanna protect her, because she's just like falling under this guy's wing, you know, like under his spell, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Yeah, there's a scene where he's high-fiving all the dudes and then he leans in for a hug and she goes in for it, and just like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, effectively get wrapped up in her part of this story. Whoa! Whoa, she wasn't home alone. She's McCulley-Calkin? Yep. She's Donald Trump? Oh, that was Home Alone. Oh, that was Home Alone. Oh, she was in that movie. Oh, she was Linnie, the one who says, you're with the French call. Le incompetent. Which which if you haven't had to watch Home Alone every year for the last 13 years at Christmas time, you may not know. You are much more versed in Home Alone. I've seen it once when it came out.
Starting point is 00:08:54 It's brutal. I don't love having to do it. But she was also, I didn't realize this, the star of the 193 TV-Fenem, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which, which is, which is the thenis player. And I remember watching an episode or two of it. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Oh, she was in Jerry McGuire. She went to Vassar. The one who plays Kelly was in a movie called 50 Shades of Black? Oh, fuck. I bet I know what kind of movie that is. God, I hope not. Kelly, no.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Fulter Rubinstein. So yeah, we're with this camera crew, and they're following Leslie, as he's explaining, oh, what happened? I just want to read you the rest of the cast of 50 Shades of Black. Oh no. These are the people I've heard of. Jane Seymour. Oh. Yeah, Florence Henderson.
Starting point is 00:09:53 Oh. Fred Willard. OK. It's a written in direct and produced by Marlon Waynes. OK. So that's what you're looking at for that movie. Oh boy, it was Florence Henderson's last that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's. that's. that's. that's the. that's that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that. that. that. I I I I I've. I've. I I've. I I've. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. that. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. the the th. the the th. the the thee. th. the the th. the. the. the the. the the. the. the. the. the. for that movie. Oh boy, it was Florence Henderson's last film before death. Oh, I forgot that she has passed. Oh, wait. Well, anyway, carry on. Well, it's not a porno, so that's one thing. That's better. That is better for Catherine Lang Johnson.
Starting point is 00:10:18 So we're following him through his training and there's these really great, I thought they are really great, really funny scenes of him being like, you don't understand how much cardio is involved doing this. Like, I have to be here and then over there and not look winded when I'm over there. And like do the thing where they're running and you're walking but somehow you catch them. I liked liked that a lot. And he does like little like flips and shit throughout the movie. Then I'm like, oh, this dude is actually super agile. He is very nimble.
Starting point is 00:10:48 And he talks about making yourself look dead with like, you're slowing down your heartbeat and breathing. I like that a lot. When they go to visit Eugene, he's buried himself good movie. Yeah, there's just like these little, like, I think what I really love, like, the humor, it's not Diggs at the genre. It's like, this is silly that this stuff happens, but it's like, this is what you'd have to, like, Michael Myers would have to be insanely fit. Right, and how did he get that fit?
Starting point is 00:11:21 He was just in an as a as an as an as. Right. And the comedy isn't about like making jokes that we know things about horror movies that you don't know. It's not like, doesn't have that superiority complex. It's just like, we all love this shit and it's so dumb. And I really appreciate that. But I also love that like some that some some some some some some some insane amount of cardio. Do you believe that's happening? Right.
Starting point is 00:11:45 While we're watching this documentary be made, we're also seeing like what Leslie, the group of people that he's going after, right? So there's this girl Kelly who is supposed to be his final girl, or so you think. And then she has like a dumb boyfriend, and then her friend is hooking up with this guy or whatever, it's like the whole horror movie cast. The two stoner guys. Yes, at a party. And then before, this is the part I really like, and it's very clue. Before it happens, he like walks them through exactly how he's gonna do it. And I like that a lot. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Yeah. Yeah. But, what's going to happen. And then when she realized, so there's a twist. Yes. We'll get to the twist now. The twist is that Taylor is his, what they don't call her survivor girl. Yeah, which I wondered why they didn't just say final girl. I wonder if there was like a copyright problem or something. Yeah, and maybe they just wanted that she do the steps along the way that he had laid out for her. And he does it. She falls directly into his trap.
Starting point is 00:12:52 But I loved her just having that realization, like, fuck. And then the kind of dumb girl was like, oh, you're the fucking survivor girl. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And the dumb girl still goes and gets killed in the exact way she was th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. th. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi, the the thi. th. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. And, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. theeeu theu teu teu. teu. th. theu. theu. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th., yeah, yeah. And the dumb girl still goes and gets killed in the exact way she was supposed to, you know? It's like, shockingly, shockingly well planned out. Yeah. Also, excellent use of, a reuse of footage. There's like, because he lays out all the kills
Starting point is 00:13:17 and you see them happen. And then when they actually happen, it's the same exact shot. And I like that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that the way like the way like the way like the way the way the way the way the way the way the way the way the way the way the way the way the way the way the way the way the way, the way, the way, the way, the way, the way, the way, they. they. they. they. they. they. they. they. they. they. they. they. they. they. they. they. they. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. t. t. t. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. th. th. t. And I like that the way we find out that Taylor is the final girl is because we're told that Kelly is a virgin and then we walk in on her just like super boning some dude. Reverse cowboy swinging her underpants over her head. Yeah screaming and you're like oh no she's not the survivor girl. She can't be. She is very sexually active. The one goes like, oh, you don't do that the first time. No, no. Is this where we get the tiddy bell that rings in a very uncomfortable way where I think he's like describing what's going to happen and then there's just like a hand clutching a boom like for a really long time? That was extremely uncomfortable. I'm trying to think of what, I'll figure out the uncomfortable tid-ybill. Yeah, it's like gong. It's gonna be a gong, yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:09 So he lays out all the steps, like step one, he needs to find an anchor for his legend. Right. Which is the house. Right. Step two, he needs to find the target group, which is these teens. High school kids. Yeah. All wearing Letterman's jackets. And Kelly is very studious. So he determines that he's going to kill her friend, the librarian, because it's not like
Starting point is 00:14:38 a close friend, but it's something that will upset her and send her down this man. Right, after she finds a newspaper clipping where he has put her face on a man's head to make it look like her great uncle was his father, I guess. And swapped out a role of microfiche to have this story in the microfeas of the library. It's so good. I love that he's jumping over a library book racks to get to things. Yes, I loved those scenes. I loved tha the scenes. I the scenes. I tha thah thine tho thine tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho thus thus thus thus thus thus thus. tho tho tho tho tho the. thi. thus. tho tho th-a. th-a th-a, I thu-a, I thu-a, I th. tho-a tho-a tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho th. th. tho thu. tho tho tho thus thus. thus. thus. thus, I'll thus. thus. the. thooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo I loved all the scenes where they showed him like how he like behind the scenes of how a supernatural killer does it.
Starting point is 00:15:07 And he's just, he's joyous in doing it. Yeah. Which is also profoundly disturbing. But you're like almost rooting for him a little bit because he's your point of view character. For sure. Yeah. What did you think of his mask? What did you think of his mask? What did you think of his mask? He just looks like an old emoji. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It. It, it. It, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, th, th, th, th, th, th, th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th tho-a, thi thi, thi's the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th th th thi, thi, thi, thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thiuuuu thu thu thiu thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thought it was lame. What did you think of his mask? This looks like an old emoji. Yeah, it was pretty duke. It looked like something you would get at the Kexburg Fair for the UFO Festival. I understood some of those words. Some people understood them. Google Kexburg. It's this this big, round big round like smiley face. Yeah. It's sort of like a
Starting point is 00:15:48 Chelsea, yeah it has like a Chelsea frown to it. Yeah. And then like brown like wavy hair glued onto it. And a very bulbous forehead like a weird alien. Yeah, it's bad. And he is like wearing black makeup around his eyes to make it look like he has like pits for eyes, but also his eyes are just like glittering in there. It's very bad. But I liked it too because like a hockey mask and and your inside out William Shatner mask you're not going to have good vision. Right. You're not going to be able to see it but his mask like there's six inches around his eyes. Extremely practical, yeah. Oh, it's really funny. So the problem with the plan, or maybe this was the plan all along,
Starting point is 00:16:31 was that Taylor like goes off script and goes to talk to Kelly and runs into Robert England, who is Doc Holleran, who, who Leslie has told her that he was a psychiatrist. But he's not, or he is, but he's not, he is, he is, okay. And he tells her that Leslie is actually Leslie Mancuso. Not Leslie Vernon. Leslie, yeah. From Reno, Nevada.
Starting point is 00:16:58 Yes, not from this town. Yeah. I really like the scene where they go outside after talking to Dr. Hollerin. And Leslie confronts them. I, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, they go outside after talking to Dr. Hollerin and Leslie confronts them. I like that like, okay, we're gonna have that conversation and she's like, yeah, I thought, and he goes, okay, that's your side of it. And then just lays into her like, oh, he's kind of scary. Yeah, that's when them, I feel like there's a big flip that happens there because you of a sudden you're not laughing. Yeah. I thought that was a really good like shift in tone. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But then they flip it right back because a few minutes later she's right back in and they're like singing in the van or something which is it's so weird. I love the description of the closet. Like the womb thing? Yeah, it's the sacred place. And she says does that that mean your pro-? And he just like looks distressed.
Starting point is 00:17:48 But then brings it up again later that he's pro-life. Yeah, yeah, he does. But there's this whole thing where like, she has to find the largest weapon that she can have to attack him. And it's got to be like a hard, solid, long weapon. Because it's his member that she's attacking him with. And then he talks about how like she has to go through this one arch opening and then through this field where there's a path because it's very yonic and it's very vaginal. Right, the birth canal. It was all very silly and just like, oh man. And it's like, I can't remember who says it, but shethere's like, she's empowering herself with cock? Yeah, right?
Starting point is 00:18:26 But he believes it. He does. Yeah. Or does he? I don't know. Yeah. Like how much? I mean, obviously he's all the way in.
Starting point is 00:18:36 Yeah. Yeah. I mean, he's planned all of this and then some. Yes. we see and then everything else, yeah. I love the night of the murders when he's getting ready to do it and she's talking to him about and he starts crying because he's so happy. Yeah, and she like comforts him. Yeah, it's fucked. It's it's incredibly fucked because he's about to, as far as she knows, he's about to kill like six high school students. Yeah, like everyone else's moral barometer would have gone off a month ago? Why didn't hers? I don't know because then she's like all of a sudden I'm a good person.
Starting point is 00:19:09 Yeah, she's like we can't just stand by and let this happen, but you were gonna let him kill that librarian. Yeah, I mean, I guess it's a commentary on like at what point do you you realize that you are indeed part of this evil? And I think he's, the problem is, the problem, the problem, the problem, the problem, the problem, the problem, the problem, the problem, th, th., th. th. th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thin, th. thi, th. the. th. the. the. the. the. the. the. thi, the. thi, the problem is he's a charismatic leader, right? He's like, sure. It's like any cult, any good cult, you know? You don't realize you're in it until it's too late. Yeah, at what point in Jones Tower, you're like, ooh, is it like, is it pre-flavoring or after? I mean, at that point, you have no choice. you have the thaaaaa. tha. tha. tha. tha. tha. tho. tho. tho. to. to. tho. to be. to. tho. tho. to be. tho. to be. tho. to be, tho. tho. tho. that. that. that. tho. tho. tho. tho. tho. th. th. that. to. to. It's, to. It's, to. It's, to. It's, the th. It's, the the the th. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's, t. It's, t. It's, the the t. It's like. It's like, the to. toda. toda. the toda. the to. the today. the the the the t Like, it gets to the point of where she has to.
Starting point is 00:19:46 But she does make a choice, and it's the choice he expects her to make, which is the we can't just stand by and let this happen, choice. Also, did you find it hard to believe the Taylor had made it to grad school and was still a virgin? She was very cute. She was driven to weaners. Or for the J.Js. Whatever she was driven to, she wasn't driven to it. Oh, man. That did remind me of, I can't remember where I saw it, but I saw, I think it was a tweet that someone posted up, where they said, uh, when male bees ejaculate their balls explode and they die. What?
Starting point is 00:20:26 So any male bee you see buzzing around as a virgin, lull fucking losers. What a weird evolutionary thing though, they can only blow their load once? Yeah. That doesn't make any sense. I mean, Katie, I am 100% basing this on a tweet. Yeah. Should we ask Google? Yes, because I want to see how you phrase this question.
Starting point is 00:20:53 Google. How many times can a male bee ejaculate? Oh, come on, don't make me look at it. I wish Google had said just once, lull fucking losers. Loseers. Wow, the ejaculation is so powerful that it ruptures, yeah. I feel like I should apologize. This is like a really graphic description.
Starting point is 00:21:16 The drone makes first contact from above the queen, his thorax above her abdomen, straddling her. He then grasps her with all six legs and everts the endophallus? Into her opened sting chamber. If the queen's sting chamber is not fully opened, mating is unsuccessful. So some males that mount the queen do not transfer semen.
Starting point is 00:21:39 Once the endophallus has been averted, the drone is paralyzed, flipping backwards as he ejaculates. The process of ejaculation is explosive. Seaman is blasted through the queen's sting chamber and into the aviduct. The process is sometimes audible to the human ear akin to a popping sound. The ejaculation is so powerful that it ruptures the endophallus, disconnecting the drone from the queen. The leftover penis remaining in the queen's vagina is referred to as the mating sign. The plug will not prevent the next drone from mating with the same queen, but may prevent semen from flowing out of the vagina. Why did you tell me about this again?
Starting point is 00:22:28 Now I will never think about anything else ever. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. How did we even get here? I can't remember. What is the road that we took here? I kind of don't even know why I'm in this room right now. Yeah, me either. You want to call it?
Starting point is 00:22:45 Oh, man, the sting. Oh, virgins, virgins being stupid. That's right, the sting chamber. Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no. I just can't think about anything else. Are there other things in the world? Yeah, yeah, there are.
Starting point is 00:23:10 Audible to the human ear. Pop! The sound of your dick ripping off was so loud it irritated me. Can you keep... Oh, I'm sorry, that's your death throes. Should have held onto your weener. It's a good thing bees can't scream. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:23:29 Well, anyway, Virgins, huh? Yes. Yeah. It was just a dumb joke that I enjoyed about Virgin. And now I've ruined our episode. Carry on. There's no way I can edit that out. No it has to stay. It's too too too. It's that. It's that. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. It's a thi. It's a good. It's a th. It's no way I can edit that out. No it has to stay. It's too good. It's too good.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Everyone's so mad right now. They're like I didn't sign up for this. I didn't. I came to hear about movies. We did get a message from a friend of the podcast who said they basically think of this podcast as Alan giggles at things Katie says. Oh God. You're very funny. No, thank you. Thank you. It's the problem is I can only tell one joke and then my penis falls off. So, oh my god. That was a good joke though. What if the sound of your, that was the sound of your penis. Oh my god, call the police.
Starting point is 00:24:15 So he kills the jock and the cheerleader. Yes. And that's when Todd, the one cameraman, suddenly realizes everything's real. Yeah. He starts bugging out. And he runs off, like, as the decoy. Right. And this is when the movie, I think this is when the movie, they put down the documentary film cameras and we switch to now we're in the serial killer movie.
Starting point is 00:24:41 Yes, and it happens really seamlessly. I wanted to mention that thatthat it's like, you don't realize, because I kind of hate mockumentaries when it's a real shaky cam or like found footage that makes me feel a little bit sick. It wasn't too bad in this one. But you don't even really notice that like, theymea. that, the than't, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, the, that, the, because, because, because, because, because, like, because, because, like, because, because, because, like, because, because, because, like, because, because, because, like, the, because, like, like, like, because, because, because, because, because, like, because, because, like, because, like, because, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, the, the, the, the, the, the, th.. th. th. th. th. th. the. th. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. change, which I think is really good. In like the stock changes for the film, like the quality. Right.
Starting point is 00:25:07 It's really, yeah, like you said, it's seamless and it's well done, yeah. I can't believe more people don't know about this movie. I can't believe it made so little money. I feel like it's gaining a cult following, but I feel like, 2006 was kind of a little bit of a fallow ground like there wasn't like a ton of good stuff coming out Yeah, sort of means that I on some of I think this should have popped more than it did But I don't know if it just didn't like they want to make a second one. Yeah, but they're having a really hard time getting funding for Oh, man, which is a shame because although I don't know I feel like sometimes maybe things are good enough you can't th, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi the thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi they. I thi thi they. I they. I thi they. I they. I they. I they. I they. I they. I they. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I thi. I thi. I thi. I the. I theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I th. I th. I th. th. I th. I th. I th. I like sometimes maybe things are good enough you can just leave them alone. Exactly. But then all the things that do get sequels are like, you know, the conjuring. Yeah, but they make one but billion dollars.
Starting point is 00:25:52 Yeah, it's because of them fucking warrants. What assholes? I agreed. I do know, I think it was cavity colors. The t-shirts. And so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, and so, I, I, I, the, I, I, th. And so, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I th..... th. th. th. th. th. th. the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, Ithe t-shirt company recently did a behind the mask t-shirt series. And so I think it is gaining, it's gaining that popularity and I, um, this was on shutter, right? No, I watched it on Amazon.
Starting point is 00:26:14 It was free on Amazon. Okay. So that'll hopefully boost its profile a little bit too. Yeah, so it's out really worth your time. Yeah, for sure. So they keep going on, and there's like these two dumb stoner dudes that get killed in like very stoner dude fashion. And you care nothing for these people. You don't even learn their names.
Starting point is 00:26:37 I think they are literally credited as stoner guy one and stoned guy. I like that. Yes. I like that because which is which. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. I think slightly more stone guy has the dialogue. Okay, okay, that's fair. This is where I have the note, Kelly is a giant. She's a giant.
Starting point is 00:27:01 She was reminding me of a coach's daughter from Friday Night Lights. She's also a giant? Yeah. I wonder what it's like to be a giant. That's pretty all right. That's a six foot too, dude. Yeah. Pretty giant. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:16 Big tall man. All right. Good to know it's good. Fine. They run to the barn where the big end showdown is going to happen.. to you, to you, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, the, the, the, the, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th, th, th, thi, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the thi, thi, the thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thiiiiiiiiiiii, thii, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th They run to the barn where the big end showdown's going to happen. Where we've been told that the big end showdown is going to happen to you. We've even had like the foreshadowing of the Apple Slater press. Where Taylor says to Leslie, like, what's going to happen with this?
Starting point is 00:27:36 And he goes, somebody's going to get hurt. And then she muses his head in it. She does. She really does. This is after Doc Holleran's been killed. Or you think he's been killed. Exactly. Yeah. And the same with the one of the cameraman. Because when he popped back up, I was like,
Starting point is 00:27:55 didn't, aren't you dead? I thought, like, why does he live? I don't know. I feel like that's always like that one guy that helps the main person out of the situation But not the boyfriend the boyfriend's got to go. It's true, you know Yeah, she can't be happy at the end. It's true But was he the boyfriend or was he just into her? I can't remember they were pretty huggy at the end there. That's true, but they must not have been too serious because he's he didn't he he he he he he he he he he he the he he the he he he the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi thi thi thr- thr- tho. tho. thr- thr- tho th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th th th th th th th th's th th th th's the. the the the the the the to the to to the the the the the the the the thro the thro the thro the It's literally the only thing you can think about. Yeah, I'm sorry I'm done. I'm ruined. The rest of this episode I'm gonna be half thinking about the movie so. Dear diary. Don't expect too much for me. She like yes she gets him into the cider press, smushes his head relatively easily. Douses the house with a gasoline, lights it on fire.
Starting point is 00:28:49 And as I wrote, has really weird posture. She's like hunting really weird. I guess she's supposed to be like the weight of the world on her shoulders. Oh, interesting. Okay. Yeah. So then we find out that Doug and Doc Hollerine have also lived. The end. The end. Or? Or?
Starting point is 00:29:07 Or? Tell me you watched through the credits. Of course I did. Oh, yay! Even though I knew what was going to happen. It's because the post credit sequence begins in the credits right away. So you know something's going to happen, but didn't the same thing happen in that movie Terrifier? Terrifier. That was the clown and he's like in like the morgue and like the last shot and say I'm just like sitting up. Yes, yes I think you're right.
Starting point is 00:29:34 Oh spoilers for that movie in case you haven't seen it. Yeah. I blocked out a lot of that movie because it was very rough. Very mean it was a hard watch. Yeah. Here's something interesting though. When I was on the Wikipedia page, I clicked on, um, and the cast, Scott Wilson is credited as Eugene slash Billy. Yeah. And when you click on that, it takes you to the Wikipedia page for Black Christmas. I think he is supposed to be the killer from Black Christmas. Oh. Which would make Jamie, Olivia Hussey???.. I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I was, I was, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, when, when, when, when, when, when, when, when thi, when I was, when I was, when I was, when. Starting point is 00:30:05 Which would make Jamie Olivia Hussey, I guess. Okay, I don't know. Weird. It is weird. And Billy's phone voice was Nick Mancuso. So I guess that's maybe where that comes from. Yeah. Interesting. So does that mean he's supposed to be that guy's son?
Starting point is 00:30:27 I don't know. I don't know. I don't know, because we don't really learn anything about Eugene's killing spree. No. But I guess he's the black Christmas guy. Other than he's really good at dicing carrots. Yeah, that. No, you just need to juice them. Yeah. So yeah, the end credit scene is like a talking head talking about the murders with surveillance
Starting point is 00:30:50 footage of this morgue attendant setting the body out and then Billy sits up. Yeah. No, sorry. Leslie sits up. Billy is a different murderer. Yeah. And that's where I have the no. The end end. Yeah. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. that. that. that. that. that. that. that's, th. th. that. that. that is, th. th. that. that is that. that. th. that is the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the end. Starting point is 00:31:07 So that is all of B's Dicks fall off. Yeah. Is that the name of this movie? Wait, am I still thinking about that? Were you reading my mind? I just like, why did you tell me that? I'm r going to bring it back up. I got it all out of there with a dick popping off.
Starting point is 00:31:27 I already don't remember. No really, what was it? The ticks and people's eyeballs. Oh, God damn it. Oh, God damn. Katie. Well, now I'm thiii' thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. Do you want to go to the b-z-blos-blos rating fate?
Starting point is 00:31:50 Oh, God. Yeah, I'm there already. Every time you see a bee now, you're just be like, I'm so sorry, dog. Do you think they know it's going to happen? Do they watch it happen to their friends and they're like well that's my fate. Do bees have like existential crises where they're like I can keep a living or I can fuck? Do you think the ones that don't connect you're like thank God? Just die of old age. I'm not doing that again. Yeah or just like if
Starting point is 00:32:20 you're fucking Russian roulette be impotentent. You're like, thank you. I do want to state for the record that if you're a virgin, it's 100% fun. Fine, oh my gosh, yeah. I just thought it was funny that the whole fucking loser thing. Yeah. I just, I love it when people are unnecessarily rude. Right, joking. Yeah. to put for the record, do what you like. Do what you like? Be who you want. Don't do what you like.
Starting point is 00:32:46 Katie. Alan. Bizz whizzed. Oh my god, you did it again. Yes, ticks in your eyes. Go for it. You go first. Uh, I really like this movie.
Starting point is 00:32:54 And like you said, I'm a little bummed that more people don't know about it, or whatever it is. I think of meta horror, this is one of the best. Eight and a half. Wow! I agree with you that as far as meta horror goes, like I understand why the meta horror and scream irritates you, though I find it kind of charming. And less after the last time we watched. Sure, but then Skraform? Yes. Screform did everything that was wrong. And this did everything right in terms of being meta, and just like like the the the the th after th after th after th, th, th, th, th and th, thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. th. th. th. thi, th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thiiiiiiiii, thiaaa. thiaa. thi, thi, thi, thi, th this did everything right in terms of being meta and just like being so self-referential but so loving. Yeah, for sure. And I think that really does mask, you're right that the comedy does really mask like the moral horrors of this film and how upsetting it is.
Starting point is 00:33:40 I'm gonna give it an eight. I loved it. I loved it. And it was really fun for a movie about Possibly falling in love with a serial killer and then having to start finding out that you are their survivor girl. Also, if you're going into it knowing they're a serial killer. Right, just like planning on a serial kill. Yeah. And like how did they ever think that was going to work out with not having to turn the footage over to the police police. the police the police the police the police the police the police the police the police the police the police the police the police the police the police the police the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the their a their a their their a their a serial killer their a their a their a their a their a their a their a their a their their their their their a their a their a their a their a their a their a their a their a their a their their. their. their. their. their. their.o.o.o.o.o.o. So, how did they ever think that was going to work out with not having to turn the footage over to the police? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:34:09 I don't know. Yeah, they're essentially making this to reveal to the world. Yeah, it's behind the mask. Yeah. Anyway, that's a similar thing to that Man Bites Dog movie. bite's dog movie, which I don't know if I can recommend because it is real fucked up, but it's interesting. I feel like that's like a film student movie. Sure. People who take film glass have to watch that movie. It sounds like it. I think it's a criterion release at some point. I don't know what that means. You know I don't know.
Starting point is 00:34:38 It's fancy. So we don't really have a mail bag for this week, but we do really appreciate all of you who've reached out to let us know how much better we are than my favorite murder. A lot of your stories are very personal, and we appreciate them and don't wanna share them here. But I didn't know just how shitty my favorite murder. I thought I was being flippant. Yeah. But it really is offensive to people and really does hurt people. So, you know what, go fuck yourselves, my favorite murder. We're still here.
Starting point is 00:35:06 We're still punching up. Can I read a tweet to you? I'd love you to. If it's about bee-dicks, though, yes, I'd love to hear it. It's from Cat Hates Nazis on the Twitter. The new what, now?
Starting point is 00:35:34 Don, Don? Okay, you say one of the teas. Butthole, butthole, butthole, butthole. Butthole. Butthole. Butthole. That's a lot of work for your tongue. Buhl.
Starting point is 00:35:56 You even have to move your tongue to say, Buhl. Dawn. Which one was that? Dawn. I feel like... We might be done. Katie. Alan. I ask you this question every week. Yeah. Because you always want me to be the one to remember. And every week you say yes.
Starting point is 00:36:18 Do you want to do another movie? Yeah. Oh, good. What should we do? What should we do? What do we do? Now you remember? Let's do something. I know you love an actor in this movie. Tell me, tell me, tell me. Uh, he already owns the pyramid that he'll be buried under.
Starting point is 00:36:35 What, to think? Is it with the declaration of independence? They are related. He had to sell the dinosaur bones and to pay taxes. Well, you gotta pay taxes, buddies. He was worried about bees. Are we gonna redo the Wickerman? No. We're doing something even crazier than the Wickerman.
Starting point is 00:36:58 What is it? Mandy. Mandy. I have. And you said it was bananas. It's fucking crazy go nuts. I can't wait to watch it. I can't wait for you all to join us next week. And I guess we could just talk about the anatomy of insects. Yeah, or we can get, we can do Boy Street auditions if we ever get them. I'm not doing those. I can't be involved in it. This is your project.
