Starting point is 00:00:00 I think. Hello, and welcome to another episode of WhereWulf Ambulance. I'm Alan, and I'm here with my co-host Katie. Hi, Alan. How are you, Katie? I'm good. How are you? I'm pretty good. So, Katie and I just watched a Nightmare in Elm Street? Yeah. Yep, we did that. We did. How are did. I'm about to drop a bomb on this podcast. All right, drop your bomb. I'm about to destroy any horror crid I may have ever had. I mean as if I hadn't already done that with every episode we've done to this point.
Starting point is 00:01:01 You've never seen the Exorcist. What? No. This is only the first time I've ever seen this movie the whole way through. Oh nice. Yeah. I saw it once on cable and I think I fell asleep before it was over. So that was the first time I'd ever actually seen a nightmare on Elm Street. But... Yeah. I'm very familiar with the Freddie Krueuger Canon because there was a period in the late 90s, like probably around 98 or so, where West Craven's New Nightmare was on like USA Network all the time.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Fuck sake. You know where Heather Langan Camp and Robert England plays Robert England, and that kid, the boys have a penis, girls have a vagina kid from kindergarten cop and place her son and I watched it like nonstop on cable so that is like my my touchstone to Freddy Kruger and if you want to kick me off this podcast right now I will go and you can just bring up the dog and she can do the rest of this podcast not at all that. Not at all but later we could talk about my feelings about meta West Craven and how he got all fucking meta
Starting point is 00:02:10 about everything. Yeah, you mean in our scream episode? Oh, no. Not even that. So this was not my first time seeing a night around Elm Street, but it was my first time probably in like 15 years. Okay. And I liked it way better this time did it. Did you? Last ti th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. the to. the the the the the the the probably in like 15 years. Okay. Let's see it and I I liked it way better this time. Did you? Last time I saw it. Okay. It's pretty scary. Yeah well. It is. No no there's some I think definitely the first death scene and it is really scary. So I don't think we probably don't need to do a recap of this because I think most people except you, have seen it all the way through who are going to be listening to this podcast? Even though I hadn't seen it, I feel like I had seen of it. Oh, it's totally in the zeitgeist.
Starting point is 00:02:51 It's like, yeah, I knew what happened. Right, it's like, I don't need to explain the plot of Friday the 13th to you. I think you've got this or well, well, or well, or well, oh, or th, or th, oh, or th, well, well, oh, oh, th, th, th, th, th, I th, I th, I th. th. thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I tho, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel I feel I feel I feel I feel I feel I feel I feel I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I feel, I th. I feel, I feel, I th. I feel like, I feel like, I th. I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I feel like, I've thou, I feel like, I've th I think that was my problem too is I was so obsessed with Halloween in Friday the 13th that this was just like I feel like it's bastard one younger brother or something. I think it definitely is I mean I think Freddy is the for me anyway it's like he's the he's a second tier he's not the first tier no talky guys. He's in the he's in the the tak ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta the's a the's a the the the ta the the ta ta the te te te te te te te te te te te the the te to to to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the te te te te te te te te te te te tea tea tea tea tea tea tea te' te te the the the the the the talky guys he's in the he's in the child's play hell razor yeah he's in the talkie category which just makes him not as scary to yeah I can see that that's a good point thanks well how about that one for Alan and the scorecard we're keeping here you may mark that down there are a lot of things to unpack in this movie too. I think we have a lot to discuss here. Sure. Where did you have an idea of where you wanted to start? Other than just talking about how amazing John Saxon's comb over? That was pretty much what we talked
Starting point is 00:03:55 about during the movie. I love John Saxon so much. He plays the cop, Nancy's father. Lieutenant. the the the the the the the to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the to the to to the the the the the the the the cop, Nancy's father. Lieutenant Don Thompson. Don Thompson, Lieutenant. What did you talk about John Saxon? It's stalwart of 70s exploitation cinema. I think he's in Black Christmas, he's in, he's in Tenabre, he's in a ton of movies. He's in, he's in, he's in Tenabre, he's in a ton of movies. I think he's an incredible actor for what he does. Like, he's really, he's the, he's the, he's the, he's the, he's the, he's the, the, the, the, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, the cop, he's in a ton of movies. I think he's an incredible actor for what he does. He's really good at just being John Saxon in movies. He does a lot of sneering in this movie. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:35 He does the sneering and then he'll do like the side eye take to the camera like, well, it's this guy doing. I felt, he was like, Ferris Buellering this movie. He was doing, he, he, he, he, he, he was doing, he, he, he, he, he, he was doing, he, he, he, he, he, he was doing, he, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was, he was, he was, he was, he was, he was, he was, he was, he was, he was, he was, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He was th. He was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he was doing, he does, he does, he does, he does, he does, he does, he does, he does, he does, he does, he does th. He does, he does, he does, he. Yeah I felt if this was he was like Ferris Buellering this movie he was doing a lot of like only I talk to the camera Wayne Wayne's world style. Yeah I think I mean I'm think that's probably how John Saxon went through life. Went he's dead no no no he's so he's sort really so Okay, well then that's how he goes through life. This on our who is dead and who is not dead podcast. I'm sorry about my tents being off. Okay, good.
Starting point is 00:05:11 Woof. Dodged a bull there. So, uh, John Saxon is incredible in this movie. It's incredible. It's like, normally you see a comb over because a th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. tho, tho, tho, that. thi. that. tho, tho, tho, tho, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. the. the. tho. tho. the. tho. tho. the. tho. tho. tho. tho. tho. It's so thick, so much. It's like, normally you see a combover because a man is trying to hide something. It's a wispy wish. He's picking a combover because he wants it. He's doing it. It's a choice. It would be a disgrace to his hair if he didn't do that covever. Yeah. So this film star is John Saxon, Heather Langencamp, thi thi and Camp who I think is only Nancy? Yeah, I think Nancy is her life. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:45 And she's Heather Langan Camp and New Nightmare. Right. Heather Langan Camp as Heather Langan Camp. Robert Englin is Freddie. Making a career of Freddy also pretty much, yeah. Well, I knew him before this movie because he was in the V miniseries. Oh. So like, and I've loved that mini series when I was a kid and don't, do not go back and revisit that. It is terrible.
Starting point is 00:06:08 I can't revisit, I've never visited. Sure. And I don't think I probably ever will. Well, I wanted to point that out. You were born the year this movie came out. Yeah, this, this, we are doing it came out November 9th, 1984. It and I are celebrating 30th birthdays this year. So I'm about to be 31.
Starting point is 00:06:32 So you sort of always existed in a Fredied universe. I had about 11 months of Freddie Free Life. Right. So that's, yeah, I mean, and I am eternal, so I've always been here. Yeah. So you said we had a lot to unpack. You know what I would like to start off with is the character of Rod. Oh, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Because Rod, like, seemed to have wandered in off the set of Westside story and nobody told him. Or Greece. Yeah, like nobody told him that this wasn't the movie he was acting in. He sleeps in a leather jacket. He pulls a switchblade. And like, I don't, he's a jet or a shark. I don't know, I've never seen West Side story, but he's one of them. It can be either.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Yeah, that gets him. Well, no, no, no. You're focusing on Rott. I'm focusing on Rott. And then at his funeral, he's, there are people, there's Nancy and her father, and like, a man with slicked back hair, who is very upset that I'm assuming is Rod's, he........... th. th. th. th. th. thi. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to. to. I, to. I, to. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. th. th. toe. toe. toe. the toe. the toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. to. to. to. to. a handful of other people are sitting around outside of the casket and like, these are his friends and his family and his loved ones and the reverends like, it is clear or whatever that he who lives by the sword dies by
Starting point is 00:07:55 the sword. Like, well, I mean, at that point in the film, Rod was still suspected of being the murder of his girlfriend. This is his funeral! He's dead! He's dead. It's his funeral. It's someone...
Starting point is 00:08:10 Oh, come on. Just say, poor Rod. They like, they just, they were like, let's get every stereotype of a his... Yeah, they definitely said he'd been arrested for I think drugs and brawling. Brawling! Yeah, he was in, he was from the 50s. He just showed up with the 50s in this movie.
Starting point is 00:08:36 He pulls a switchblade. It's 1984. Great. Yeah, it was pretty fantastic. Rod is definitely my favorite character. This movie is directed and written by West. It was pretty fantastic. Rod is definitely my favorite character. This movie is directed and written by West Craven. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:48 Who is the director of such classics as Last House on the Left, the Hills Have Eyes, a swamp thing, people under the stairs, a personal favorite of mine that not a lot of people have seen Deadly Friend where, what is it, Christy Swanson, the woman who played Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Yeah, she's in it and she blows Mama from, throw Mama from the trains. She blows her head up with a basketball and it's fucking amazing. That sounds amazing. Deadly Friend, it's a really good movie, check it out. I love people under the stairs as well. It's like a the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. It's a thi. I's a thi. I's a thi. I's, thi. I's, thi. I'm, their, their, their, their, their, their, their fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa. Buffy the vampire. Buffy the vampire. Buffy the vampire. Buffy. Buffy. Buffy. Buffy. Buffy. Buffy. Buffy. Buffy. Buffy. Buffy. Buffy. Yeah, the the the the the the the the the the the the thi. I's, thi. I's, thi. I's, thi. I's, thi. I'm, thiauaua' fa'faua'faua'fa. I's fauauffia. I's, thi. I'm the thi. Buffy the as well. It's sort of like, uh, Monkey Shines. If Monkey Shines was a girl but not a monkey.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Okay. All right. Yeah, people into the stairs. Great movie. Because it has Ray-Anne from My So-Cah-Oh, does it? Yeah, she's the daughter. Yeah, anyway, carry on.
Starting point is 00:09:39 Yeah, I like it because it looks like Skid Row lives under the stairs. I mean he's also the director of all of those meta-horr films like, ooh, what if a horror film got broken down, it wasn't a horror film, but now it's a horror film. Fucking bullshit things that happened in the 90s in the early 2000s. You guys are really going to love our screaming for half an hour. Yeah you should download that one. I'll let you know when it comes out. Like us on Facebook. It's just Pat Pap's Rant Corner. So yeah and he's the the director of the of this movie. And I have a lot of, oh wow what's the word, I'm ill will towards West Craven at this point in
Starting point is 00:10:27 his career. You mean now, West Craven, not 1984, West Craven. I see. But going back and thinking about Nightmare and Elm Street, the Hills Have Eyes, the Pivot the shit out of me when I was a kid. Yeah. when I was a kid, like they totally like, he'll say if I scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. Yeah. And I just, yeah, so like, watching this tonight,
Starting point is 00:10:51 watching a nightmare on the tomorrow really like, maybe revisit those feelings and just, you know, it's kind of like, oh, I'll make a musical comparison. It's kind of like, when I was a kid, Metallica meant the world to me. But the Metallica that exists now is a gross thing and disgusting. And I just, I have to separate the two. So tonight was kind of me doing that with, with West Craven and it being real. You know, at one point he had a master's of puppets. Yeah, and now, now he makes load.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Now he has saint anger or whatever. Stanger. Yeah I can see that. I mean this, yeah, for sure, this era of movie too, I feel really conditioned me to expect a certain kind of horror movie, which is to say like very little plot and very little like exposition of anything. Like it's really just like run around violence like there's literally one scene of exposition and it's just Nancy's drunk mom being like we we burn that man because he was a bad guy and they like don't even explain the end and that's it the movie ends like right and that's the kind of horror movie I want to see well I I a personal favorite like sub-sub
Starting point is 00:12:04 genre of horror film is the kind of horror movie I want to see. Well, I, a personal favorite like sub-genre of horror film is the like Dream Logic Horror film. Yeah. Like Fantasm. Yeah, and Speria and almost every Fulchee movie like, yeah. Just like, oh, this is a nightmare. You're just watching a nightmare. So stop asking questions.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Sure. Sure. Yeah, yeah yeah where you don't need like fuck sometimes just don't need logic sometimes you just you just want to watch some cool stuff happen like sometimes you want to watch a car wear a sweater and drive away at the end of a movie real weird real weird ending to your movie there was craven apparently there was a happy ending shot to the movie that was scrapped because that in order to make sequels basically I don't know I think it they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th the th th th th th th th th th the th the th th th th th the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th th th th th th th th the the the the the the the theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee thooooo the the the the th a happy ending shot to the movie that was scrapped. Was that in order to make sequels basically? I don't know. I think it they, it was a thing that they used to do. They would shoot like, I know the, here I go.
Starting point is 00:12:52 When they shot the thing, when they shot the thing. Oh yes, I was hoping it would come up. It didn't come up during. happy ending that was shot to the thing. I see. So like they, the studios at the time were like, and I'm sure they probably still do this today, they want a happy ending in a movie. They want to be able to say, oh no, everything's good. So, but that was scrapped in for the ending that we have now in the movie. Which is nonsense. Yeah, but you're supposed to assume to assume to In the end, everyone's dead. Well, anyway, let's, let's circle back around. I'm sorry, I brought us to this point just by talking about Rodd,
Starting point is 00:13:28 but uh. So Rod's a silly character. There, everyone in this movie is a fairly silly character, probably with the exception of Nancy. Right. They're all just. No, Johnny Depp's pretty good. Glenn's a pretty good character. Glenn. He's just like like the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I's th. I's th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. He's just like a dumb jock, though. Yeah, but he's like the most beautiful dump jock you've ever seen. He's so cute in this movie. This is his first movie. And he's good. He's like, you can see, he definitely acting, acting chops for sure. And I just, I have like such a personal love for Johnny Depp because he's literally keeping my grandmother alive. I love this story.
Starting point is 00:14:05 So much. My grandmother is 90 years old and she is in very good health and she rules. And Katie's a huge fan of her grandmother. I am. She raised me and she kicks ass. But she is just fucking in love with Johnny Depp. And she just keeps saying like, when you're 90, like I guess you're thinking about your own mortality a lot because she keeps talking about like how she's gonna die soon but she keeps saying like I just have to
Starting point is 00:14:30 stay alive to see like the next Johnny Depp movie and the next Johnny Depp and like luckily for us Johnny Depp puts on a new movie like every 45 fucking minutes so what is the try and what is the trivian. What is the. What is?? what? what is the the the the the the the the the the the the the they. What is they. What is they. What is they. What is they. What is th. What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is th. What is? What is? What is th. What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is. What is? What is? What? What is? What? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is? What is................. Is. Is. What is, the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. th. th. th. th. t. the Caribbean Five? No, well, like, yeah, basically, but then, to her credit, like, when the Lone Ranger was coming out, I was like, oh, Nonna, did you see the trailer for the Lone Ranger? And she was, I was like, you have to stay alive to see that? And she was like, now, like, no, she does have, like, she does have like some, the, to.......... to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to. the, to, to, to, the, the, the, the, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like my god, no, just Johnny Depp. So, yeah. So as long as he keeps putting on movies, Nona will live forever. Okay.
Starting point is 00:15:09 Which is awesome. So, yeah, him and his weird side pipe are really good in this movie. Yeah, there's definitely a dick shot of Johnny Depp's. And I'm like half tempted to take do you want to see like a teenage Shawnee Depp's weiner? Well, it's through his jeans. It's through his jeans. I think she'll still appreciate it. Sure, why not? I showed her like how I could look him up on Google image search on my phone and she was like,
Starting point is 00:15:31 hold on a minute and just like I'm scrolling through. It's great. So, so, so, so, that shot, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, I. That's pretty awesome. I think I'm going to take it over. Yeah. Anyway. She doesn't need to see the whole thing. No, just that shot where he walks out with, and probably that shot where he has the Midriff bearing shirt on to. Number 10. Yeah, but she doesn't need to see him die. That would be.
Starting point is 00:15:54 For sure. I mean, she even like, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, the. to, to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to, to, to. to, to. to. to, to. to. th. to. to, the. the. the. the. t te. te. te. te. the. the. the. the. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. Smith thing going on. Yeah, well, you know, older women generally, let's let's move on. Oh, God bless you, none, huh? For me, I'd like to do a bit of research as we're gearing up to do these films and stitches, stitches left me with nothing. Yeah, I wasn't much for the look up. But a night where an Elm Street, of course, is making up for this and by the spoonful it's so good like there's so much info out there. I just spent a long time even just on the Wikipedia page. So just a few facts. The movie was made for 1.8 million. It made, what did it make?
Starting point is 00:16:39 What did it make? It just totally crushed it like it knocked it out. And this was the first film for New Line Cinema. Yeah, a couple of studios passed on this movie? Yeah, they had a really hard time. Oh, did I do research too? Oh shit. It was an accident. I was reading about how it was a 30th anniversary. Sorry, carry on. No, no, no, no, no, no. It's fine. Other facts about this movie. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. David. Starting point is 00:17:35 Some other stuff. The dream idea, the idea of people dying in their dreams came from newspaper articles that West Craven read in the 70s about refugees coming to the US from Cambodia. They were Kameer refugees and they were having these awful nightmares that was keeping them from sleeping because I didn't want to sleep they're having terrible nightmares of US bombings and all this stuff. Oh wow. And then eventually some of them started to die in their sleep. And the medical authorities at the time came up with the time to to to to to to to to to to to to the US. the US. the US the US the US. the US. the US. the US. the US. the US. Oh the US US. Oh the US US US US the US the US their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their the US. the US. their the US. their the US. their their their their their their their their their their their their their their.c. their. U.S.C. their their their their theirthem started to die in their sleep.
Starting point is 00:18:05 And the medical authorities at the time came up with a name for this. Asian death syndrome. Oh my god, of course. Of course they did. I just love the, I don't know, blah, uh, Asian death syndrome. Yeah. All right, I'm going home. Let's go to lunch. Fucking USA.
Starting point is 00:18:27 Actually, after Asian Death Syndrome, I just wrote, thanks, medicine. And apparently also the song Dream Weaver had some sort of influence on the movie. Really? On the score as well, so. A lot of the score, I meant to say this to you during the movie I didn't mean to say it on the podcast but here it is coming out of my mouth because I can't stop talking is sounded to me like boss music from double dragon too. Yeah it gets really like video gaming yeah like I felt like I had to be hitting the
Starting point is 00:18:57 B button really really fast until my thumb hurt because I just keep drop kicking drop kicking like it really it really hits it. they were having a weird interaction with him that was about that Bop babba yeah very strange yeah it was it was not a good score no who did the score You know it wasn't anybody that I recognized so I I got nixed what I know I know one other fact about this movie oh please and that's that West Craven named Freddy Kruger after a bully a kid who? I got bullied him in grade school and I started th the the the the the th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th the the the the the th the the th the the th out th out th out th out th out th out the the the they. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th the the the the the the please. And that's that West Craven named Freddy Krueger after a bully, a kid who bullied him in grade school. And then I started thinking about how if I ever made a horror movie I was going right the fuck after Jessica Duffy, you brat. You brat.
Starting point is 00:19:34 So that's just the thing. Oh, I have a terrible memory so all of my bullies are safe. Oh man that's great. Yeah I don't remember. You don't just lay in bed at night like, oh Jessica Duffy. No which makes me fear that I was the bully. Someone at home is just like Alan Hitchins. Someone is writing a screenplay where Alan Hitchins wears a red and green sweater. I think they they the reason it's red and green is because it's the most conflicting conflicting the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the reason the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. I's. I'm that's. I'm that's. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I's th. I's th. I's th. I's the the the th. I'm. I'm. the the the the the the the th. th. the th. th. th. th. th. the the th. th. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I green is because it's the most conflicting to the eye color combination. So like they put all this research into making that character which I found like really, he feels pretty well fleshed out for a character that there's almost no back story to when you're first watching it's like. Yeah, but he's also like five foot six and not about the redening.
Starting point is 00:20:18 Yeah, like you're the same height as this like 17 year old girl. Yeah.. Yeah. Yeah. I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I like. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. the. the the the they. Yeah. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the the th. the the the th. th. the the the the the the their. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the they. the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. the th. th. the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. this like 17 year old girl. Yeah. I don't know. I feel like I've seen movies where, obviously we've all seen movies where short actors are creatively shot to look bigger like everyone's seen a Tom Cruise or a Patrick Swayze movie just put them on an apple box. You know what I mean? I thought that first scene when his arms are real stretched out and then like a, what's it called, a thing outside of a used car dealership or waving in the wind? Yeah, which is, it actually was cool.
Starting point is 00:20:50 But then they show him J-singer and you're like, oh and suddenly you're a tiny little man. Well, that's one thing that I was thinking about, and I often think about when I watch movies that are supposed to be set in like dreamscapes are never fully fleshed out. So like if I'm, you know, my memories of a dream, if I'm looking at a wall, that wall is maybe like four feet of space and then kind of like fog all around it. So like it being like set in such stark reality,
Starting point is 00:21:16 most of the time of the boiler room and all that stuff. So the little things like the girls standing in the puddle of snakes or Freddy being tiny and running in like a grotto-Marxie kind of way at her. So that kind of stuff I think lends itself to that dream logic, but it also looks absurd if you're not hyper analyzing it. Yeah, you know what I mean? It sort of falls apart if you're not paying that close of attention to it, which nobody was. People that are going to the movie just wanted to see the man with the scary knife hands.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Right, me too. Right, sure. Yeah. Yeah. Scary nightgames, man. Um, and they are pretty scary. To be fair. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:58 Especially when he cuts his finger off in that first scene. I think that's a really nice touch the first time you see him. Right. Except that he goes, I wish that he wouldn't, you're right that he talks too much much because he goes, hey, look at this. And then he cuts his finger off like, just look at her and cut your finger off. That's so much more effective. Hey, Nancy. Yeah. Michael Myersness in this movie doesn't even compare to what's going to happen down the road when he's just like, fucking Shecky Greenwood getting up there. Is this thing on? You know, like, it's, it gets terrible after a while. But from what I remember, two is not good. That seems to be the consensus of the Amazon box set that I bought on Amazon Prime for $8.
Starting point is 00:22:45 You can get one through four on Amazon Prime, eight bucks. Which is how we watch this tonight? Yes, the sound is terrible. Sound probably not so good. Yeah, don't buy it. You get what you pay for with this one, folks. The disparity between the talking and the action sequence is the light year years volume wise. And the double dragon score is also very loud. But I remember, yeah, Dream Warriors, three being good.
Starting point is 00:23:09 But I don't remember if I just think that because Dawkin had a song on the soundtrack that I was really stoked on. I bet that's probably it. But I, but also looking at reviews that movie gets better reviews than two did. That's good. How many nightmare on Elmstream movies are there in they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they than two did. That's good. How many Nightmare on Elm Street movies are there in total? Well they've rebooted, they did West Craven's Nightmare, so I don't know what this one. And then they did like Freddy versus Jason and all that. Yeah, so it's got to be nine, something like that. I mean I think I think Friday the 13th is still winning I thin' thinnene. I have th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th I don't th th th th th th th th th th I don't thin I don't thin I don't thin I don't thin I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't I don't th I don't th I th I th I th I th I th I th I th I th I don't th I thin. thin. thin. I don't thin. I don't know I don't know I don't know I don't know thin. I don't know thin. I don't know tho' thin. I don't know thin thin thin thin th I all that shit. But yeah, Nightbripe and Home Street and Halloween can't be far behind.
Starting point is 00:23:50 Yeah, Halloween is really picked it up in recent years, I feel. So finally doing a movie that someone's heard about, yeah. I was able to consult my tomes. Oh, good. Blow the dust. You know, I have, I like to read books of horror movie reviews because that's the kind of guy I am. So I have this book that I really love called The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies.
Starting point is 00:24:13 It's like, I think it stops in like 85. So it's like the beginning of cinema, it's in 1985. So a quote that I pulled from the Encyclopedia of horror movies, which actually give this a really glowing review, is that in spite of the low budget, the special effects are striking, and I have to agree with that. Yeah, there's a lot of, it's really like charming I feel like the the stairs, the gooey stair scene is great. Anytime anything was cut open it looked totally gross and it was awesome. Yeah, I agree. Like when Tina's stomach gets sliced sliced the the the the the gna theeee the the theau sleauedededededed. theaued theau theau theau thea theau thea's theau theau g loeau gloe. theau g. theou glowed the. theating. theou-s theou-s. theou-s. the. the. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. thea thea thea. thea. theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeea. thea. thea. thea open it looked totally gross and it was awesome. Yeah, I agree. Like when Tina's stomach gets sliced open. Or when Freddy cuts his chest and there's just maggots and goo and green shit. Yeah, I mean probably the most ridiculous thing is his tongue coming out of the phone, but come on, who cares?
Starting point is 00:24:58 I'm your boyfriend now. It was fine. I couldn't even look at the tongue though because I was like just laughing at that line. Just like all the stick going, yeah, like, but then the base of the phone had also become a mouth, which was like, how, why? Why? I just remember there's a C with a close with his mouth and he does that a-la-la-la-tongue thing. Yeah, that's really upsetting. Freddie. Oh, God. So I, I just just, I the the the the the the th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I just just just just just just just just just just, I there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's. I there's. I there's there's just remember. I just remember. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I's. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I just remember. I just remember. I just remember. I just remember the. I just remember. the. the. I just remember. I just remember the. I just remember there. See. See. See. See. See. See. There's. There's. There's. There's really upsetting. Freddie. Oh God. So I consulted in another book as well, which is more recent, called Heavy Metal Movies by Mike Mibirdo, McPadden.
Starting point is 00:25:34 Do you think he gave himself that nickname? I hope so. I've always tried to give myself a nickname and they never take. No one ever called me Tank. Maybe this will help. Maybe this podcast will help. And he says, the quote that I pulled is, the shock of nightmare came from its ferociously imaginative visuals. A horribly logical storyline and Craven's command of suspense. But I thought, yeah, I mean again I think it's the visuals in this movie that really
Starting point is 00:26:03 make it. Yeah, for sure. Obviously it's not the plot. There's no, yeah, I mean, again, I think it's the visuals in this movie that really make it. It's not so much. Obviously, it's not the plot. There's no, yeah, the plot is not. Right. One such striking visual is this, the color of the mother. She's monochromatic. She's the color of a girl cheese sandwich. Yeah, but you're right that the effects and the visuals in this movie are really, especially for how cheaply they were done.
Starting point is 00:26:27 Right. Really, really good. And a lot of them, I think we're like food base too. Like the, weren't the, weren't the stairs done with like oatmeal? It looked like, yeah. Yeah. And, um, the Johnny Depp death scene was just like food colored water wasn't it? Oh yeah yeah I'm sure yeah. Oh I was Freddy for Halloween when I was 12 years old. Oh that's adorable. I dressed as Freddy. I couldn't find a red and green sweater though so I had like a brown and black striped sweater. It was not that good. No I'm sorry
Starting point is 00:26:58 that's great. I had the Freddie mask and the hat and the glove. Did you act were you did you run around from the house? House, like, ah? I just kept yelling, I'm your boyfriend now, people. I think this was a year or two before I was Alice Cooper for Halloween. That's, that's pretty sweet. It's a pretty cool kid. Oh, I also wanted to mention that I love sex sounds in 80s, or 80s movies. Oh, yeah, yeah, who what it what what? What? What am I doing it wrong? What are they doing in there? Whatever it is I was not doing that that well in high school. I'm I don't think anyone's doing that now if they're
Starting point is 00:27:35 doing it I don't I'm not sure what they're doing. It's very weird. The boyfriend Rod was like that and the girlfriend's response, jungle man fixed jane? Oh, God. No more fights. All right, fine, Rod. If that's, that's fine. Oh, God, was Rod his nickname? No, because they said it at the funeral.
Starting point is 00:27:57 Oh, that's true. OK. And at the end in the police station. Oh, wow. he. th. pretty good though. But um... Ah! Ah! Ha! Rod, man, I can't get over Rod. He's definitely my favorite character in this movie. Yeah, I feel bad that I didn't write the actor's name down. So 1984 was also a really good year for horror movies.
Starting point is 00:28:18 And for birthdays, I mean like... Chud came out that year. Uh, Friday the 13th, the final chapter. I don't know why I just said chapter. Chapter. Come on, come on. Because you're from Ohio. Night of the Comet. I never saw that. Oh, word. That's, well, I mean, I'm not. Put it on the list. Silent Night, Deadly Night is also from that year. Okay. So, I mean, it was just a pretty good year in general, like, you know, I turned 10 that year. I have a lot of good memories of being 10 years old.
Starting point is 00:28:46 Wow, good for you. Yeah. But, yeah, and I definitely didn't see this movie in the theater. I would hope not. Yeah. You're a little bit young for it. I think probably the fourth one was the first one I saw in the theater because I went to see Dream Warriors on my 13th birthday and my mom wouldn't go see it.
Starting point is 00:29:08 So we went and watched some kind of wonderful instead. Which is still one of my favorite movies. Yeah, it's good to say that's a nice substitute. Yeah, but it's not, you know, when you want Freddie. John Hughes, Light, and who's not is not really what you're going for. Let's go through the death scenes real quick. Yeah, there's not, I mean there's only three deaths in this movie, am I right? Unless you count.
Starting point is 00:29:34 Four. It's a pretty low body count for a horror movie, really, really, but other than Rob's death, I think they're really good. Yeah, you don't like Rod's death? I mean, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, let, let, let, let, it's, it's, let's, let's, let's, let's, let's, let's, let's, let's, let's, let's, let's, let's, let, let, let, let, let, let, let, let, let, let, let, th. Let, th, th, th, th, th. Let, th, th. Let, th, th. Let, th, th, th, th, th. Let, th. Let, let, let, let, let, let, th. Let, let's, let's, let's, let's, let's, let's, let's, let's th. th. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. Let's, let's the. good yeah you don't like Rod's death I mean well let's start Tina's death I think Tina's name so many times in this movie they really do they just keep saying it over and over I found like Tina's death pretty unsettling yeah way more unsettling than I expected to it's because she's an underwear to it's just to the the thrashing her poor little body about I I I I I I I I I I I I I I they they they th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I the the the they. I the they. I's they. I'm they. I'm they. I'm they. their they. I's their their their their their their their their their their their. I'm their. I'm their. I'm their their. their their. their. they. they. they. they. they. they. the. the. the. I the. I the. I the. I the. I's the. I's te. I's te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. t I expected to? It's because she's in underwear too. It's just super upsetting. It's like real, she's real vulnerable and they're just thrashing her, poor little body about.
Starting point is 00:30:08 She's in her bedroom, which is always like, you don't want shit to go down in your bedroom. She's that cute little haircut that I kept thinning, can I get this, um, very beautifully supernatural aspect to it where, once the sheet's taken off of her, you can no longer see Freddy. Yeah, because you're seeing it from like Rod's perspective, yeah. And so when she's, she's just being cut open, yeah. And you're not seeing what's doing the cutting, it's, it reminded me of like an
Starting point is 00:30:40 Ambrose beer story or something where it just became like, this otherworldly thing is happening that you just can't process you know like and that that and then they had the whole spinning room thing so they were able to roll her up onto the ceiling yeah and it just like it became really unsettling and it sort of a lot of scenes in this movie break that line between what is dream and what's reality in like a in a really nice way that like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like. like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like the like the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the this movie break that line between what is dream and what's reality in like a in a really nice way that like kind of like kept me like every time they were doing something I was like is this really what's happening or is this the dream? Yeah and I appreciated that. Yeah. But I really really found her death scene to be unsettling. Yeah it was very upsetting. And compared to that Rob Rod's just being like having the sheet kind of animate itself and hang him. Yeah. to that Rob Rod's, just being like,
Starting point is 00:31:25 having the sheet kind of animated self and hang him. Yeah. You know, it wasn't that impressive. That's fair. But I did really like the scene where her body's being drugged through the hallway. And you see nothing lift. Oh, at the school, yeah. the legs left in the air, yeah. So good. Did the s like the scene, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th. th, th, th. th. th. th. th. that, that, tho, tho, tho, th. th. th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th. th. th. th. th, th. th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. th. Yeah. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. that, that, that, that that that that that that that that that the. the. the. the. the. the. the good. Did you like the scene where the Hall Pass monitor turns into Freddy?
Starting point is 00:31:46 I did. What did he say? I don't know. I don't remember something stupid. Yeah, Wes Craven, not so good at the dialogue. Yeah, I wish, yeah. Just so clever, you know what I mean? So fucking clever.
Starting point is 00:32:00 Yeah, yeah. Do you think Wes Craven just... You're already laughing, it's not even funny yet. Do you think he's just like sitting in front of a laptop somewhere and you like write something and he's like, oh yes, it's perfect. Ha ha ha ha! And then like someone else reads it and they're like, oh, fucking Wes. But they're going, yeah, this is really good, Wes, you're really th and th and th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, yeah, this is really good, Wes, you're really nailing it, buddy, you're really giving him a handy like so fast. Why, it's so fast? I don't know, that's how he likes it. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:32:30 Well, wearing like a just a rubber Freddy glove, because that's how he likes it too. Why am I saying this? Oh my god, okay. So let's move on to Glenn's death scene, because it's also excellent. Yeah, Glenn's death scene. He's watching like a portable TV. Right, because Miss Naked America or something? Miss Newed America. Yeah. Wait, before we get to Glenn's death scene, I want to talk about Glenn's dad,
Starting point is 00:32:56 because he's my favorite character in the movie. I said Rod was but I just changed my mind. Glenn's dad appears for like three minutes and he just fucking blot like botches the entire movie he just comes in and he's just like Ah fuck your plans I'm drinking a beer looking through your window a I'm taking the phone off the hook Ah my son's dead that's what every dad does though I guess not what John Saxon does that? That's true. that's not what John Saxon does. That's true. Yeah, that's not what? they? th. th. th. th. the th. th. the th. th. the the th. the th. the the the th. the the the the the the the the they. the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. that. th. the their. th. the the the the the the the the the their. the the they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they th. they th. they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they the their. I the their. I the the their. I their. I their. I their. I their. I their. I their. I their. I their. I th. I didn't. th. th. th. did. did did did did did did did did did did did thr thr. thr. thru. thr. thr. thr., she like, it seemed to me that she had it like hidden everywhere too, like in the linen closet and, ugh. And it looked like, and it looked like, I mean, I don't know. It looks like what? Well, I assume it was probably vodka or something, but it looked like I know this probably didn't exist at the time but it looked like the like whipped cream vodka that I've only ever drank at like Bachelorette parties so I just imagined drunk tan mom just drinking
Starting point is 00:34:11 whipped cream vodka out of the bottle it looked like the bottles were always chilled yeah it was like frosted yeah drunk mom oh drunk mom oh drunk mom oh to the tru the tru cudd thrown this thrown thu thu throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng thrown thrown so th th th throng throng th th th th th th so th so th so th so th so th so I th so I th so I th so I th so I th so I th th th th th th throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng throng thrown so thrown so thrown so thrown so thrown so thrown so to thrown so to to thrown so to to thrown so thrown so to two, oh God. Anyway. Yeah. Very, very into drunk tan mom. Quick digression. This movie also had the thing that I don't believe is real teenage girls in nightgowns? Yeah, I don't think so. Yeah, I don't think so. I think that's just West Craven's fantasy.
Starting point is 00:34:39 That's just a middleteenage girl. Yeah, yeah. There's a lot of that. There's a lot of thighs in this movie. All right, so we're on to, so Johnny Depp, Glenn's Deetson. Yes. He's wearing a midriff bearing t-shirt. Also not a thing I don't think teenage boys do. Oh no, that shit. So he's watching the Miss Newed America, listening to generic instrumental rock music.
Starting point is 00:35:14 With headphones labeled with his name, with a label maker. Well, so he's watching this, he falls asleep, and then Freddie gets him and just sucks him into the bed. Yeah. And then all the blood from evil dead comes pouring out of the bed. Yeah. Or like the shining. Yeah. But it was great because again they utilized the the spinning room so they were able to turn it upside down and just pour the blood out of the bed which gave it this great effect of spreading on the ceiling and it became really, again, disorienting. The th, and th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th thin thin thin thin, thin thin, thin th thin, thin, thin, thin, th then thin, thin, th then the, the, the, the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th, th, th, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, the, the, the, the the the the the the the the the from the from the from the from the from th really again disorienting and the thing I really liked about that was there was a light fixture on the ceiling that was like one of those square ones that kind of hangs above or hangs below a light bulb and it was like being rocked by
Starting point is 00:35:59 the force of blood on it I thought it was a really nice effect I even liked it though when the blood was running out and it was just kind of like these the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. It was like, th. I even liked it though when the blood was running out and it was just kind of like these rivulets coming down. Yeah. It was lovely. It looks beautiful. It was lovely. I think there's a you know you either have a repulsion or an attraction to blood. Yeah. Right then I was having a pretty strong attraction to it. It's really it's really embarrassing actually when you yeah I think their their their their their their their th. It was th. It was their th. It was th. It was their th. It was th. It was the th. It was th. It was the the th. It was the th. It was th. It was a th. It was really th. It was their th. It was a their their their their their their their th. It was just th. It was just th. It was just th. It was just their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. It was just looks looks looks. It was really was a they. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's really really th. It's really th. It's th. It's really th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It was th. It was th. It's really the you, yeah, I think we should probably not talk about it. Oh God. You got boners on the mind, you've got to definitely put you in the mood. Well, you know, yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:33 Um, so then the last death scene is near the end of the movie. Nancy has set Freddy on fire and he's stomping all over the house. This is so silly. So silly. And they finally find him and he's... don't know what he's doing to her mom. Yeah. Hugging and drunk mom. And John Saxon Dad puts him out with a blanket, takes the blanket off, and skeleton mom is floating in space where the bed used to be? Blue light fog space?
Starting point is 00:37:14 And John Saxon and Heather Legging Camper just staring at her like, oh, uh, what? What's your drink, ma'am? Well, there's, that's what she does now, and then she sinks in then, and the bed, and the bed, and the bed, and the bed, and the bed, and the bed, and the bed, and the bed be be be be be be the bed, and the bed, and the bed be the bed, and the bed, and then she sinks in the end, and the bed becomes whole again. And that's sort of the end of it. But it was a cool looking effect. It looked neat. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:33 I didn't know what was happening, but it looked neat. I don't think you're supposed to know. It's like, eh, you know. So they die. So they die. Yeah, and then there's sort of a Freddy death scene where she decides that he's not real and tells him as much. I wanted to like talk about that. Johnny Depp didn't think he was real either. And he didn't tell him.
Starting point is 00:37:57 What? She told him to his face. So it was really a self-esteem issue for Freddy like he was like because she goes your shit and then he turned into blue glitter and disappeared so it was really he just needed to be told that he was like someone said to tell him he was human garbage go oh man I am shit you've confirmed how I feel I'm a like you're a child murder she didn't also like the plausibility of like not knowing that when you you were a child that 20 children in your neighborhood were murdered By your parents no that he murdered 20 children
Starting point is 00:38:31 Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, right right right, right. That they burned down a building that this person was in. Yet your mom kept the claw glove in your furnace like also. Like also your dad's a cop you think you'd be like maybe we shouldn't keep this evidence here in our fucking house. You think he was like oh hi I'm I'm the lieutenant let's keep this evidence right here in the basement under this tapestry of the dogs playing poker. No they were playing pool I'm sorry I'm such I'm such I'm I'm the idiot. You're so pedestrian they're playing pool Katie. So another thing I want they they they they they they they they they the th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th thi thi thi thi thi that. You're so pedestrian, they're playing pool, Katie. So another thing I wanted to talk about, the sort of, maybe the, not pacification, but sort of the the milk toasting of Freddie,
Starting point is 00:39:18 where like, you know, this first movie, he's a pretty scary antagonist, like, the idea of someone haunting your dreams and coming to kill you, and even, like, I remember three, I'm really, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm such, I'm such, I'm such, I'm such, I'm such, I'm such, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm such, I'm such, I'm such, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I, I'm, I, I'm, so, so, so, so, so, so, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, Ithis first movie, he's a pretty scary antagonist. Like, the idea of someone haunting your dreams and coming to kill you. And even like, I remember three really creeping me out, like, because he does the thing in three where he rips out of kids veins and tendons and turns him into a marionette. And that was like, yeah, yeah. What? I can't wait to watch that. So that really grossed me tha became like this, instantly became this caricature. He became like a commercial. Is that what you're talking about?
Starting point is 00:39:49 Yeah. I mean, you could, they just defanged him. He became completely like milk toast. Well, you could like, I remember buying a lunchbox thermos combo. You know how remember you could buy like a lunch. like they're being at like AIMS like a Freddy Kruger lunchbox there in this combo like for children sure like next to the new kids on the block ones yeah so that's not that's that's not the Halloween costume I wore when I was 12 was four kids yeah of a child murder yeah yeah yeah Michael Myers or Jason haven't been really
Starting point is 00:40:22 defanged in the same way no I don't think they're parodied and they're brought up like all that stuff. But it's not. No. And then like. Not made into like t-shirts the same way like or just right. Yeah. And like Chuckie and. You buy a Chuckie doll. Oh my god, the're already comedic. Yeah the lepricon makes himself a right we're talking about Warwick Davis right now right? Well I know I mean and we're talking about the lepric and we're talking about the lepric and as a human being. Yeah I thought I'm smirching the name Warwick Davis. No I meant you weren't talking about like something more obscure. Oh, the 1893 silent? Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:41:07 Oh, the one directed by Lord Frontierroy. I don't know what I mean by that. You know, something I don't know about. So I just wanted to like, sort of talk about that and like, I didn't have anything to say. I just think it's interesting that like he been... They were able to market him so well. Yeah. Do you think that was to their advantage or disadvantage?
Starting point is 00:41:30 I mean, I'm sure they're rolling in the monies. Yeah. From a capitalist perspective, everything was definitely to their advantage. That's true. But you take your villain and make him like sort of a cuddly Well, they made him really quippy as the movies went on like even worse than he was in this one So so this movie Was clearly pretty important to you in your your horror upbringing what how would you rate it's numerically in your in your your your spectrum of horror where does it come in on the without? the Is that what you're asking? I was going to say on the avatar to the thing scale. As you've put it before.
Starting point is 00:42:08 Excellent, well. I don't know. I would probably give this, I would give it a seven. A seven. You put, you're putting this below without warning. Just because of how tainted everything got with it. But I can't. I can't, I tha tha tha tha tha tha tha tha th. thi tho th. tho tho. tho tho. tho. tho. tho, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, that, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the the, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thin, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, that, thate. Excellent, to, to to to to ta, to to ta, to to to to ta, to thi. Excellent, thi, thi, thi. Oh, okay. I mean, I enjoy it. You gotta look at it a standalone, it's a movie. But I can't. I can't, I, like, it's totally tainted in my mind.
Starting point is 00:42:29 Like, Freddy got fangless, not vicared. Okay. And it just definitely, it, it goes down because of what they did to the character later. Okay. How about you? Where would you put this? Well, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to to th. to th. to to to be, thi. to tho. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. the. the. to, toooooooo. to, to, to, to, to to, to to, to to thee. the. like. Okay. How about you? Where would you put this? Well it's super enjoyable. It's I, oh Johnny Depp is so cute and he's got that dick scene. He's keeping my grandma alive so I got to give him some points for that. God love her. But the lack of a plot and the just, just the fact that ends and you're like, what? Wait a minute. It almost feels like insulting for a minute. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's, the, the, the, the, th. It's. It's. It's, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, it's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's, the. It's, t. It's, t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. the. the. It's. It's. the lack of a plot and the just, just the fact that ends and you're like, what? Wait a minute. Well, it almost feels like insulting for a minute where you're like, West Craven, like, did you write this to make me feel stupid? I will say that at the 45 minute mark, I had the thought, I don't know if I could do 45 more minutes of this. But then it picked right back in the the the the th.
Starting point is 00:43:22 But then it picked right back up. It was like that lull right in the middle of the movie. But then it like it just kicked right back of the gear. Yeah. But yeah. Um, six and a half. Yeah, all right. Yeah, I like it. Totally solid.
Starting point is 00:43:32 Totally enjoyable. So you gave it a lower score than I did. today. Yeah. Well, I'm hi not. I lied. You really gave stitches like a 27 or so. I did. 27 out of 10. All right. Yeah. I think that's that's solid. Oh I did want to mention quickly. The poster art for this. The campaign was fucking amazing. Was it? Was it? It was beautiful. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean back in the day of painted posters. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I exactly what you're talking about actually. Really gorgeous really good. It's just poster art so. So yeah I guess that's going to be the end of this. Happy birthday nightmare on Elm Street. Yeah. HVD.
