Gene has brought us American and American werewolf in London. I always forget the Anne when I talk about this movie. I like that. I like that there could be more than one, and this is just that one, you know. I like the specificity of it. We will be doing spoilers during this episode, as we do in every single episode that we do. What prompted you to bring this movie? I really love creature features. I really love werewolves.

I love practical effects, and this movie is really famous for its practical effects. And also it's just a pretty solid fun fun movie that I was hoping you'd both enjoy. I don't know. I'm pretty sure Alan likes it. I don't know about Katie. Everyone says that because I don't like anything. I'm sorry. Well, I'm starting to get, I'm starting to get a sense of what you like. Are you, because if you could explain thi.

And I wasn't sure if this would contain those things. And I know what Alan likes. I know the era of movies that Alan likes. Old Magic movies. Literally, it is as old as me. It's a couple months younger than me. So I think that Alan will like it. Because I like you.

Yeah. I like all things from 1981. It's age to the specific, wonderful age that I am aged. So that's basically, I think it's like, I love werewolf movies, but they're not always great. And I think there's like one of the most well-realized werewolf movies that's ever been done. Oh for sure. Yeah. Let me consult a tome here real quick. Oh wow, look at that. This is the John Landis' Monsters in the Movies.

Guess what? That's in the corner of my bedroom right now. I was looking at it last night. You read the werewolf chapter last night? I did. Yeah. So about an American werewolf in London, John Landis says, This was my attempt to make a movie dealing with the supernatural in a completely realistic way. Because there is no such thing as men who become monstrous wolves when there is a full moon.

I tried to explore how one would react when confronted with this as truth. What do you do when the unreal is real? That was my premise, and an American wearable in London is the result. I think that's pretty well realized, yeah. There's a lot of pretty good making of features and stuff you can watch. And I was watching one of the really short ones that was made around the time that he made the movie, where he kind of said the same thing. And it's kind of why it has the atmosphere it does, why the characters are sort of, you know,

just like, whycracking and stuff. Because he imagined if he thought, if this was happening to him, that he would be like, well, this is bullshit, and he would just be kind of trying to laugh it off, because he'd be like, oh, I'm just crazy. I'm just crazy, this is just bullshit. Yeah, that makes perfect sense. I mean, the werewolf doesn't realize or understand or believe that he's a werewolf until there's like 10 minutes left in the movie. Yeah. Yeah.

There's a thing called clinical lycanthropy, which is like, it's a real thing, and it just describes a certain kind of psychosis where you think you're a werewolf. You're not a werewolf. So I guess kind of the idea of this movie is that like up to a point he could just be experiencing that and like he's having these dreams or he is a werewolf and he probably only really thinks that's what's happening and that's what the nurse and the doctor are probably thinne they're seeing. But then at some point the the the the the th they're seeing, but then at some point it turns out he is actually a werewolf. That's got to be a bummer of a realization. It seemed to be. Well we'll get to the end, but yeah. No it all works out. It's fun. Yep. Everybody lives

happily ever after. I think we can open it by talking about the slaughtered lamb, where everyone is dressed like they're in newsies, even tho. I don't think I remember right now, but he's kind of an actor that we saw again come up a lot in like the 90s and early ops and stuff. You know, they're kind of getting out that like sort of insular rural culture versus like an urban culture, you know, and they all have this like terrible secret. They have a werewolf infestation and they probably don't, they don't think that anyone, you know, from the city would take what they were saying seriously or would think they were kind of like superstitious and backwards so they can't tell people what's happening, and they're very, you know, secretive and unfriendly. Yeah, and they seemed to have to have to have to have to have to have to have their their their their their their their their their their their their they they seem their their their their their their their their their their their their, their, their, their, their, their, their, like, like, like, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their very, you know, secretive and unfriendly. Yeah, and they seem to have some sort of dissonance about it too, where they send these kids out into the rain in the dark on the moors, knowing there's a wheralf out there,

and then they're like, that was murder. Yeah, yeah, it kind of was. Although they were. Well I would think about that too because it's like if you don't want to tell people there's a werewolf and you don't want to sound crazy you could at least say there's a we have a serial killer or something that will keep them inside but wouldn't make you look crazy. Right. You know but no one ever does that in horror movies. Maybe they're all slowly becoming werewolves. Yeah, because even after they shoot that one, and then later the doctor goes back to the slaughtered lamb. So they walk off the road, these two guys who look immediately. Look largely the same. I don't mean to say that all white people look the same, but I feel that they do. I always thought I got David Noughton mixed up with the guy in Grimmons. For years I know Billy and Billy. Billy from Waxwork. I know David Noughton because one of my favorite movies when I was a movie was a movie was a movie called Midnight Madness, which is Michael J Foxx's first film. He's really fantastic. And then he's like, oh, hold on, like goes back for him. I don't know. I sort of appreciate that though. Yeah, I think that would be my reaction. Everyone thinks they'd be better, but probably a to to to to to to to to to to to to be a to be a to be. Remind me not to get attacked by a werewolf with you people. I'd like to think that I would step in front of the werewolf. But I'm probably going to run. But I mean, me running from a werewolf is the werewolf.

It killed at the slaughtered lamb though. They loved it. It definitely killed. I couldn't tell where they were coming down on it if they were coming down on the racism aspect of it or on the Americans are shitty or if they were just... I think it was the Americans are shitty. I think that's largely the prevalent idea in this movie, isn't it? Yeah, Americans are terrible.

Like Frank Oz's character. Who was Frank Oz? Who was Frank Oz? He was the American puppets? He was the Fawz bitter. Yeah, he was like, I was And then he appears later as Miss Piggy. He has two credits in this movie. He gets credited as Miss Piggy too. Oz. He's so ineffective because he just comes in and screams at a guy who just like survived a horrible trauma and then

leaves. And he's like these kids don't appreciate anything. Yeah. And he's like these kids don't appreciate anything. Yeah. I have the note David Cross guy has extreme nerd voice and that's about Frank Oz. Yeah. It does kind of look like David Cross. It's those glasses or something. I had no idea that was Frank Coss. You guys are, you know shit. I don't know shit. He's in all I think all of John Landis's is that true? Yeah. Also I just wanted to take a blur by just a quick moment to recognize that John Landis directed the thriller video which is like my favorite piece of media ever made. He also, Rick Baker who did the effects for this did the effects for the thriller video. Nice. So this was like this I think this would be there for, this is our second team up. Rick Baker also did a guerrilla suit for him for his movie, which I've never seen but they the talk a th th th s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s sa tha thi thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. the. That sounds like it would be good, but it is not good. He did Berkian hair, it's like a, it's about the body snatchers. And it sounds like it'd be good. It's Andy Simepag and John Landis, and it's sort of like a horror comedy, but it just kind of not good. Yeah it was not good. Bad news, sorry. The Christopher Lee cameo and it did not save that movie. And you even remember it. He plays one of the dead people. Oh, that's what he is now. We've left the pub. They're out on the Moors. And the people at the bar are hearing howling. It's very interesting. That they're not cool with. It's like the only person who cares is the woman who's tending bar. I guess, but then those guys come out with a gun and they do shoot it. Like, why didn't they just come? I don't know. It doesn't, I don't understand their motives. Why didn't they just either not send them out into the night or not go?

I mean, they could London being on the road. It's true. No, I really did it. So they get attacked. And it's so narly. It's so gross. It's so gory. I like it because it's like that's the thing that lets you know is like, oh, this was funny right? It's not so funny right now. It's sad t moments where something really ridiculous and funny is happening and something really grotesque is happening at the same time. Like not to fast forward but like the porno

theater scene is like the best example of that because they're really disturbing sad and like horrific stuff having in the same time as something super funny. That porn is the funniest one I've ever seen. Yeah. That porn is part of some sort of running joke he had, where he would use, see you next Wednesday title, which I assume is that references to you next Tuesday. Yeah, yeah. And he was, apparently he would like kind of drop that in all his movies. And there's a lot of scenes in this where you see like posters for it in the

tube and stuff before they say it in the the the the the, th........... posters for it in the tube and stuff before they say it in the theater. Oh really? Like this is like a funny running gag of his and then he finally realized it in this movie and like filmed it to put it drop into this movie. What's the guy say when he walks in? He's like, I thought we agreed you wouldn't do this anymore. The dude's like, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I love when she gets the wrong phone call, the wrong number phone call to. She's like, okay, thank you.

Bye-bye then. Just go back to Boning. It's a great porn. It's a great porn theater. It's a great porn theater. I would watch thin. Was this before the time scene at all. There's a whole crossover with this because apparently Landis had asked Rick Baker years before they actually made it.

Like when I do this werewolf movie, you're doing the effects and he was like definitely, definitely, definitely, and it wasn't getting made. So he handed the howling over to Rob Boatine who did the effects and the thing. But they were being then also like they're friends. So like they're being filmed by two directors who are friends at the same time. Like they knew what each other were doing and that they both kind of like latched on to this at the same time. But it's kind of interesting because I feel like they both have like they're like the first whereof movies with these next level of facts and they came out at the same time. I know this is skipping way ahead but between the two of them, I think this is the better transformation. Oh yeah, 100%! 100% and the werewolf's cooler.

I don't actually super duper like the howling were wolves. I think they're cool. And they're like at the time they were really cool, like it wasn't a wolf man. Yeah. But yeah, I was just watching the transformation and I was like, man, the howling translation is really fun.

This one is fucking disgusting and creepy. And it also doesn't take 10 minutes like the howling one did if I recall correctly. Wait, wasn't it three minutes and then you listed everything you could do in this? Oh I think so. This was real and I didn't even time this one because I was like this. Look at thrown. I actually really like that. Yeah they both could attack Jack is dead. I was worried I was gonna have trouble telling them apart and then I was like I guess I don't have to. No. Because when Jack shows back up you know he's a G. I. Joe. Jack's dead and David played by David Notton, good casting, wakes up in a hospital, and we learn it's three weeks later. But all he has is cuts and bruises, according to the doctor, so why has he been unconscious

for three weeks? Is anyone concerned about this? Nope. Nope. It was enough time for the nurse to fall in love with him. And look at his dick. Yeah, they look at his dick because I did the nurse checked out his junk this is a fear of mine there's a lot of very unprofessional professionals in this movie looked at his peeper sad face

Yeah, but he stepped in his friend. Yeah. Just this gross disembodied arm. Because he says, oh, he says is that you, Harry, and then he steps in Harry. Yeah. And I thought that was really funny. I feel like there also, like he was, like, Landis was also kind of poking fun at this sort of like upper class, sort of overly polite British manner. You know, like when the guy's in the subway and he thinks the werewolf is just some person fucking with him.

He's just like, you know, like, this is certainly not funny. of those guys getting destroyed. And apparently when it's screened and tea like losing it to a degree that it was like they couldn't move on to the next scene. Like people were still like shouting and freaking out and Landis thought it kind of like made it hard to get people to focus on the next scene. But I don't know if it's like a deleted scene that we can see somewhere or something, but it exists. It's probably really nasty. Maybe the cue wanted to save that level of insanity for the end. Yeah, I like that you don't see a bunch of that, like you don't see the kills. They're all, they're mostly off screen. I think, you know, Jax is the one in the beginning that you really get a good look at when it's just mauling him. And no one takes him seriously. So then he calls his family sort of half-heartedly tries to kill himself but doesn't. Then goes to the porn theater. Jack looking even more desiccated and incredible. Porn theaters are a weird concept. Yeah. I know. And it was very expensive too. It was like two pounds 80? In 1981, that's a lot of money.

To see that amazing porn, but still. Jack shows up looking insane. His like, he's, what I really like is he keeps saying words like schmuck, which must be really hard to say it without lips, like it's just these clanking deeds. Is it a full animatronic? It's a puppet. It's a puppet. And Griffin Dunn was operating the puppet as he was saying the dialogue. Oh, that's neat. It's pretty cool. And also it has one of my favorite things, which is when a skull has eyeballs. I really like that. It makes like no sense and it looks super cool. You know? Yeah.

I guess that this they are Baker was saying it's it's kind of like always an issue with effects where you can't make someone convincingly look like a skull because it's like not additive. You have to take away. You need to like dig out the skin. So what they usually do is they build them up. They build someone up so then you kind of get this weird big head. Because you're building out the cheekbones so that you can make it look sunken. So they just were like, fuck it. We'll just do them as a whole puppet. I always think about the dad and the Father's Day thing on yes. Yes. When his head is his skulls like 15 sizes. Yeah. big. That's how that happened. So yeah, so then Jack is introducing David to all the people that he's killed.

Yeah, it's a really funny and also just distressing and sad and weird scene. And the polite British couples like, just put the gun in your mouth and then you won't miss. So you set up to your forehead, like, and and they're like that's a wonderful idea. Everyone just has a sort of normal demeanor that they had like that British businessman is like just kind of cranky like just kind of like oh this is preposterous like that I'm dead how rude please kill yourself you know and the couple's very sunny about it. It's equal parts hilarious and very sad. Yeah, I think it's that perfect balance. Like it's not necessarily like a lot of horror comedies that kind of like set out to be a comedy first and foremost.

It just kind of has that weird, absurdist feel to it. It's like this is so ridiculous. And like there's jokes and people are being funny, but it's like terrifying and sad at the same time. Yeah I compare it to something like return of the living dead which is you know funny and ridiculous and gross but it's like there's at no point I'm like oh this is totally terrifying where this movie has that. I don't know just being where the corpse says it hurts to be dead. That is really fucked up, scary and sad. Yeah, but it's not like, I don't know. It's not on the level of this movie.

No, not at all. But it's just like one little moment in that movie. Oh, that's fucked up. Okay. It does have one of the most terrifying scenes. Linek. It never leaves me. It's with me always. So much more upsetting than if you saw the actual bits. David has his transformation.

And it's hilarious because it's in a porn theater and he starts screaming and grunting and moaning. And the guy comes up and he's like, please just go away. Oh, this is also they, um, they is when they refer to as carnivorous lunar activities. Yeah. In like that super stuffy, uptight, British way. I don't know that down. So yeah, he's like, he's now porno transforming and start slaughtering the people in the movie theater, transforming, and then the cops come in and he chases the cops out and bust through that door and it's like what the fuck

this dude's insane and then every car in London crashes nobody knows how to break they're all just like let's just drive it right into that wall the dude flying out of the bus window is that when he gets beheaded somebody gets beheaded no the wolf fights the guys the guys out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the they the they the they the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the, the wolf bites the guy's head off. And then just like spits it out. Yeah. There's one of those stunts is done by Landis. There's a scene where he crashes through a window. But you can like see it's him because he used to be a stunt guy, I guess. Of course he did.

And I guess so that scene was like a really big deal because they had to shut down that square to film it and it has to be like had to be perfectly choreographed so they could do it really fucking quickly and you know like you said like every car is crashing every car is crashing everyone is like flying through windows and the wolf like when they show the wolf running it's actually like a guy so it's a guy laying like on a kind of flat wheelbarrow situation. Oh okay is that why you never see like the back end of it. playing on a kind of flat wheelbarrow situation. Oh, okay. Is that why you never see like the back end of it? Yeah, the back end is a person's legs sticking out. So it's like, yeah, the actor's arms are operating the front legs.

And then someone is like pushing them on a wheelbarrow and the back legs are being puppeteded by like rods. It looks really cool. Yeah I love it. It looks awesome. When he's just kind of like running to the city and looking back and forth at everybody like, oh am I going to kill next. So then we get the cop showing up with their guns, cornering him in that alleyway. Yeah and then Alex comes running in like, I love you and I have the note all in caps which says we'll love be enough. And the answer is no, it's not. It's not. I always was like, I can't remember where I heard this, because it wasn't on the extras

in this DVD I have, but I watched some other behind the scenes where Jenny Agata said she could not stop laughing. When they were filming that scene, because she thought it was so ridiculous, because what she was talking to was like that actor, like on the wheelbarrow thing, and he's looking into this like angry, like, you know, sculpted, hilarious wolf face that's just like completely still and saying, I love you, David, and she like couldn't keep it together because she was like, this is so stupid. Yeah, but it doesn't come off as stupid. It's like very heartbreaking. That's the thing about were a sad animal. It's a sad monster. The movie. The movie. The movie. The movie. The movie. The movie. I mean, it's one of my favorite horror movies, so I would say like a 10. Oh yeah. But it's not like one of, I guess it doesn't like say a lot that's like super insightful or anything like that, but it's like just really perfectly executed and awesome and it has amazing effects and visuals and jokes. So I think it's great. Katie. I had never seen this before and I loved it. Oh, awesome. I think this is like what horror comedy should be. And that's why I get so mad when things are over the top or when things are like the comedy is taking away from the horror because in this movie I think the comedy is present but it's not taking away from how

There's not a lot in this movie, but it's so enjoyable to work. You're entertained. Yeah. I don't know what either of them were thinking when they set up this situation. Oh, she was thinking, I'm gonna have a sad fuck, and then he was thinking. And then what? So. You're art. Not junk at all. I just finished out a big zine projects with Mike who was on previously. He does something called Seventh Church Ministries, which is like he puts out these sort of very limited art scenes that are related to horror literature. And for mine I chose to do illustrations based on Nikolai Gogol's horror stories, which are kind of his lesser-known things, which is something I've been like really obsessed with for since I

was like in my 20s. And so this is like a really big project for me that I just finished late summer of like 15 illustrations and you can't buy them anymore because they already sold out. So I'm not really promoting that per se, but that's like the last really big project I finished. This is just like small black and white illustrations. I just finished four big pieces for something that's going to come out through Sennepede Press, but that's not coming out till 2017. Whoa! Which I just found out even though I just finished them so get excited about that. It's illustrations based on Ramsey Campbell's short stories, which is really cool because he's an author I really like. Yeah. And right now I'm just kind of hanging out and working on personal projects. I have an Instagram which is everlasting faint can follow me there. It's where I post a lot of stuff. Do you do commissions at all? I do take commissions if they are cool. Because I have a day job so I don't want to do

stupid commissions anymore but I do like doing commissions if they're kind of like, if you look at my stuff and you think oh I have something that will like really be perfect in this style and like open to doing stuff like that. Nice. Yeah. People should take a look at your stuff and employ you to do things that are cool. Thank you. Yeah, I agree.
