Starting point is 00:00:00 Exploring four seasons of Courage Incorporated with Duncan Sinclair. Join me as we hear courageous and powerful voices. Gun violence issues or like if we're on fire, we cannot deal with that stuff. On Dragon's Den, they always say to people, you're not an entrepreneur. Anyone who have the guts to set up a company, that's an entrepreneur. Commerce looks very different on the continent of Africa. How are we inviting people with those experiences into the classroom? That's bad management at that institution. They're turning down an idea.
Starting point is 00:00:30 I was going to ask if you were going to take a run at the bank, but we'll keep that for another conversation. Subscribe now to Courage Incorporated, wherever you get your podcasts. Christina, you can sit here. Christina takes a seat. Helen, Karen, Lauren, Lauren's mum, who said that she won't say anything, so that's good. I won't. Vanya and Christina. And I'm going to hand over the microphone to Vanya.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Vanya has the microphone to Vanya. Vanya has the microphone. Vanya has the microphone. Yes. Because I have something to tell you. Yes. I was the one who delivered the suitcase. Vanya delivered the suitcase. You were? Yes. I delivered the suitcase. Finally delivered the suitcase. You were?
Starting point is 00:01:25 Yes. I delivered it. I was called just to deliver the suitcase. I did it and I promised to never tell who this person is. But I had contact with the person and I was allowed to tell them that I delivered. the person and I was allowed to tell them that I delivered. I will keep this for myself who it is because I promised this person. Is this true?
Starting point is 00:01:52 Yes. They asked me if I knew what was in the suitcase and I'm not sure if I knew or if I asked you afterwards but I know the person who give it in my hand and I trust that person that much that I think it was no bad thing. Explosives. No. Why doesn't this person want me to know? Is that person angry with me? Does that person want me to feel bad? Does that person care for me in a way? Yes. Do you feel better now? No, tonight I can sleep. I won't be able to sleep tonight because I'm going through every friend we have in common. And who would like to trick me like this. Do you know if this person is going to tell me this before I die? I asked yesterday if this person was going to do that before this person was going to die.
Starting point is 00:02:57 And the person said yes, because I want the suitcase back. But you can tell your friend that after they are gone, I will burn this suitcase. But you will find it out before that. You have to. We want to. Yes. But it's really hard. We have to work. We've been working today.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Three persons. We've been working so hard today. We've been driving to everyone's house. We went to visit six people today. And we've been speaking to other people on the phone. We've been trying really hard today. We've been driving to everyone's house. We went to visit six people today. And we've been speaking to other people on the phone. We've been trying really hard, Vanya. And the strange thing is that I have put this so far behind me that I nearly forgotten that I was involved. But 11 years.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Why does this person want it back when he or she hasn't needed it for 11 years? It was an old memory from some person. A grandfather or something. We will torch it in two weeks time. Two weeks we're torching the suitcase. Yeah it's going up in flames. In fact tomorrow night we're torching it. We'll take, we'll start peeling bits.
Starting point is 00:04:00 Really interesting because I thought they had put all the items from a vintage shop or something, but this is personal. Friendship. What is it built on? Integrity. Trust. Honesty. And what is friendship not built on lies suitcases trespassing secrets
Starting point is 00:04:31 how are you feeling christina i have mixed feelings how do you even begin to address the fact that your best friend has lied to you for over a decade I have a lot to think about, especially on our relationship. That's going through my mind. Lies about a crime that was committed against you. A crime that also involves another person that you know. It is that this person whose secret you keep must be a person that matters more to you than I do. That keeping the secret from this person means more to you than making me feel relieved. Just think about that this evening. How do you repair that broken friendship?
Starting point is 00:05:21 That strong, loving friendship that is so essential to your life. I just have to, I think I have to be by myself. Well, you start with the truth. Feels good to tell the truth, doesn't it? Yes. And yes, the truth can hurt initially.
Starting point is 00:05:39 How have you been able to keep this? Yes. It's a secret. And what goes on in my head is, do I trust you more or less? Yeah, you have to sleep on that. Yeah, I have to sleep on that. But sometimes the truth, over time, can bring you closer together. And guys, it might take some time to repair this broken part of the friendship. No.
Starting point is 00:06:03 But you will get there because the important thing is today we have been partly honest with one another. Do you still love each other? Yeah, of course. Oh, hug it out. Oh, really, Christina. This is episode 10 of The Case of the Tiny Suitcase. Right, let's get down to business.
Starting point is 00:06:39 We're going through all of Christina's photo albums from when the kids were young. Every single photo that was taken of their family. And Karen comes across something outrageous. But actually, if he's wearing them, how wasted? We are looking at a photo of a small boy and a small girl. The photo is taken from inside Christina's house, but is facing the front door. The small boy is opening the front door and stepping out onto the veranda of the house, also known as the crime scene. They are both wearing oversized gumboots and the boy is wearing a top hat. But trust me when I say
Starting point is 00:07:20 that is not the most questionable item that he wears. He is also wearing a tiny suit. Where's the door handle? It does fit, doesn't it? Size wise. This is this door, right? Oh, it is. Karen grabs the tiny three-piece corduroy suit and holds it up to the front door in the same position as in the photo. The size syncs up. It's a match. Should we ask Christina what she thinks? Yeah. Christina, we're doing a little reconstruction of a photo we found in one of your albums.
Starting point is 00:08:05 Oh, look at this. Same suit in the album. You were? Have you told me a lie? No. They have looked through the album and they're now looking at the suit? Do you have a picture, Karen? I do. Could you pop over here for a second, do you want?
Starting point is 00:08:21 In one second. Why are you not coming over? Because I'm barbecuing halloumi and it will burn and then my mother will be very sad. Where's the picture going? Oh, it's all right. He's preparing. He tried to get me a look in my eye to see if I could give him an indication of what was about to happen and I didn't do it. How is he?
Starting point is 00:08:41 Everything's falling into place just as we're leaving. Pop on over, buddy. I promise you, I have asked him. Yeah, I'm sure you have. Hey, you will. Nice to see you. Nice to see you. Do you recognize this suit? I really don't. Should I play a little? I think you should play a little something something. You've been placed on hold. Please wait. Hello, Stig? Hello, yes, speaking. A few hours ago, we called Stig. Stig is another of Christina's cousins and is also brother to Klaas and Per.
Starting point is 00:09:13 Oh, hello, it's the assistant to the detective, Karen Whitehouse, and the more important detective, Lauren Kilby. The more important? Was that you or? That's me, Lauren. I'm Ewell's girlfriend. And we've decided to play back this conversation to Ewell and Christina. Okay, very good.
Starting point is 00:09:35 The reason we're speaking to Stig is because we looked further outside Black Lake to identify if there were any other young men. Men who were young enough to fit into the tiny suit. We sent you an email. We'd love to just record what you thought of those photos that we sent you of the suit. Okay.
Starting point is 00:09:58 Did you recognise it? I think I did, yes. Oh nice. It belongs to Joel. And when he was too old, when he couldn't wait anymore, we borrowed it for our son, Victor, probably somewhere end of 90s. Sorry, just can I just clarify, it originally belonged to you will my boyfriend yes possibly not originally he got it from somewhere but but we got it from him and and when we got it it belonged to him okay for some reason they had it and we were there and and we thought you couldn't wear it anymore because it was too old.
Starting point is 00:10:47 But Victor could. So we borrowed it. Borrowed it. I mean, did you return it? Yes, at some point. But I don't know when. It could be so that we kept it in a wardrobe or something for some years. And then possibly or obviously returned it at some point.
Starting point is 00:11:09 Okay, cool. So basically, you borrowed the suit from Yuval when you were at Christina's house for your son Victor. That was like the late, I'm pleased, like 1999. And then you probably just returned it back to her by hanging it on her veranda that could have happened yes i don't know how we returned it what year do you think victor would have been too big to wear the suit at what point do you think you'd be like right we have no need for the suit i'm not sure if we even were it, maybe once or twice, but not more.
Starting point is 00:11:47 But it's sized 140, is it? Yes. He was born in 1990, so I was thinking maybe 1911, yes. But we moved to the United States in 2001. I don't think we brought it there, no way. So we probably used it 99 and possibly 2000, but no more than that.
Starting point is 00:12:13 And when did you return from the States? A year and a half later, 2003. Did you ever see Yule wearing the suit? How did you know that he was wearing that suit? And how did you know about, were you going through all of Yuval's clothes in his wardrobe? How did you come across the suit? How did you know you wanted to take that suit? I don't think I wore
Starting point is 00:12:43 in his wardrobe. It was probably Christina who offered it to us since it was in Victor's size. Okay. Is it possible to quickly speak with Nina? She's not here. We're divorced, you know. Oh, sorry.
Starting point is 00:13:07 Sorry. Ah. No worries. But you can call her as well, of course. I've just sent you a picture of a soap to your email and I wanted to see if you recognise it. It belonged to Jewel and we borrowed it and we were over at
Starting point is 00:13:28 Christina's and she gave it to Victor. Do you remember returning it? Yes I did but it was a long time ago. I just dropped it one day or one day when I was near to Black Lake.
Starting point is 00:13:47 What have you got to say for yourself? I really don't remember this, but maybe I... But I can't, because I remember so many outfits from being a kid, but not... But maybe... Do you know who this is? Wearing a little suit on Christina's porch. Playing dress-up.
Starting point is 00:14:10 The crime scene. Is that you? Yeah, it is, because that's Julia. We just did a little height test. We just hung it up, because this is the door that photo was taken in front of. And it fits the height. Yeah, of the suit. When it was too small for Ewell, Steve came over, you offered it to him.
Starting point is 00:14:29 I thought that. And you said yes. Yeah, but Joel didn't recognise it, so I didn't follow that lead. Oh, OK, so you trust your son, do you? Yeah, I do. I also used to trust my partner. So can I just recap? We have come to Sweden to investigate what we thought was a crime when in fact it was just somebody returning an item that they borrowed from you. What the fuck?
Starting point is 00:14:57 We didn't know. I don't know. I didn't know. I don't remember all these things. I'm not that kind of person. No, no, look. I remember the picture of DJs. No, no, don't worry. I didn't know. I don't remember all these things. I'm not that kind of person. No, no, look. Don't worry. No problem. I don't want to lose my temper, Christina. No, no, it's okay.
Starting point is 00:15:11 No, it's okay. But going back to what actually happened is that they were returning an item that they had borrowed from you. So that was funny. It's funny because you remember how I asked you at home the other day, pillow talk, I was asking you why you had so many blue corduroy items in your... They're quite new. Yeah, but what it's proven is that you really like blue corduroy. This doesn't feel like something you go and buy out of free will as a kid, though. Psyche. Navy corduroy has been inbuilt in your psyche, yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:42 It's baked into your brain. The corduroy's been inbuilt in your psyche. It's baked into your brain. Okay guys, I honestly do not know who to trust. Why? I think that there's something going on. I've just got a really bad feeling. What do you mean by bad feeling? I don't know, I feel like, I don't know, I can't explain it.
Starting point is 00:16:01 It's something like... Something's gone wrong and it's like, are we going in the wrong direction? You're not making any sense to me. I'm flipping out. I mean... Is this a fucking set up? Well, I don't think so. They can't have known 12 years ago that we were going to come and do this. No, no, no, that's not a set up.
Starting point is 00:16:19 Who the hell is this mastermind? What if it's Christina? I think you're overthinking it. I think we're spiralling too much. What's going on? Let's not break down our unit. We need to stay strong. We need to stay strong. We need to be a team. Yeah, you're right. We're all we've got. We know we're not lying. We trust each other. We can't trust anything else.
Starting point is 00:16:41 Our friendship and your marriage is all we have. I don't even trust my own boyfriend who's been lying to us. We can't trust anything else. Our friendship and your marriage is all we have. I don't even trust my own boyfriend who's been lying to us. Steve? Yeah? We kind of forgot to ask you a really key question when we last spoke to you. And it's probably the most important question because it's the the most important question
Starting point is 00:17:10 because it's the only way we can actually verify if you're telling the truth to us or not. Yeah I'm telling the truth as I remember it. So can you just explain where you are in your house right now? Where I am? Okay I'm outside our bedroom where our wardrobe is. Would you mind opening your wardrobe right now? Sure. I'm imagining there's quite a few coat hangers in there, is that right? There are some, yeah. How many? How many?
Starting point is 00:17:38 All in all, well it's a common wardrobe, it's like a walk-in closet really so it's quite a lot 50 more 100 maybe maybe not 50 to 100 okay we can work with it 100 would be too much perhaps but agree are they all identical or is there a mixture of styles of coat hangers it's a. I want to know the top three coat hangers, the most common coat hangers in your wardrobe. Most common? Yeah, so let's start with the most common one, the one there's just so many of. Okay, it's probably quite thin. It's a place for trousers and also for the shirt. It's two layers? What colour? Black.
Starting point is 00:18:28 Okay. What material is it made out of? It's plastic. And then what's the actual hook made out of? It's steel. I just sent you a picture. Do you think we need to have another drumroll? I think so.
Starting point is 00:18:44 Could you tell us when you're about to hit send on the think we need to have another drum roll? I think so. Could you tell us when you're about to hit send on the photo and we'll do a drum roll? Okay, just one second. Okay, there it goes. Okay, so the drum roll in sound design is going to start now. And then, Lauren, are you refreshing your email? Okay, refresh, refreshing, are you refreshing your email? OK, refresh, refreshing.
Starting point is 00:19:07 I'm refreshing. I can hear my hand clicking. I'm going to sign it. That's it. That's the one. That is the coat hanger. I thought, to be honest, Lauren was going down a complete rabbit hole with this one,
Starting point is 00:19:25 but this has been the main theory that she's been relying on to tie up this whole investigation. And I have to say, Lauren, well done, because your gut instinct was right, and I never thought I'd be here feeling how I feel right now, which is pride. Thanks, Kieran. Look at this. What I find amazing is that you just...
Starting point is 00:19:43 Christina was posting about this on social media and was talking about it to everyone. So you just didn't come across any of the Facebook posts or anything, did you? No, no, I didn't. Do you not have Facebook? Maybe I do. I do. But I don't use it much. I mean, I do, I do, but I don't use it much. That simple, small act had a butterfly effect of other cases of reverse theft that inspired other criminals in the local area
Starting point is 00:20:15 to sort of victimize Christina. How do you feel about that? Yeah, it's overwhelming. Actually, it is, yeah. Overwhelmingly nice or overwhelmingly horrible? I mean, yeah, maybe both in a way, yeah. Or a small act could have that consequences. Exploring four seasons of Courage Incorporated with Duncan Sinclair. Starting point is 00:21:18 wherever you get your podcasts. podcasts. But we don't know who was the mastermind behind wanting it to be deposited here. But Vanya's really not giving anything else now. No. Nothing. But who could Vanya be protecting? Because the other thing that happened today was we were kind of messing with Vanya a little bit. We thought if she understood everything we'd been doing today, she might feel bad for us. I said, honestly, do you think we should just give up?
Starting point is 00:22:04 We're feeling really hopeless now. And then she went, no, no no don't give up go on you will make it love heart and she's like read your list of persons again dot dot dot and i'm like what does that mean so i just don't understand what does that mean and i don't know whether she means the list from the party original party or this Facebook message, but she's not giving anything else away. Yeah, it could be anyone at this stage. Yeah, I really think so. It's, like, almost more annoying when you've just got, like,
Starting point is 00:22:33 you're close, but you're, like... We are close. I feel like we've probably met, and that's the thing that I can't cope with. I know. That's the thing I can't cope with. We've definitely spoken to this person. If we're getting a clue that says
Starting point is 00:22:45 read your list again. Well, I don't think we're going to solve this tonight, unfortunately. Okay, well, I think we're going to have to go because we've got to have dinner and pack because we've got to get up at six tomorrow morning. Oh, such a good job you've done. It doesn't feel
Starting point is 00:23:01 like that. No. No, but we'll let you have. We will lick our wounds during the week. We will feel better and more proud as every day goes by. I don't think we're finishing the investigation. Even though we've told a lot of people we are, just to threaten them. But it's time to leave. Yeah. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:23:19 Oh, you've done such a great job. We're sorry we haven't solved it yet. No, I'm not sorry for you. It's been so good to have you here. Thank you for being such a great we're sorry we haven't solved it yet no i'm not sorry for you oh it's been so good to have you here thank you for being such a great person i hope you have enjoyed your visit to my country i love sweden Bye! Bye! Bye!
Starting point is 00:23:43 Bye everyone! Oh! She's mounted the kerb. Watch where I'm going. Can you imagine crashing at the last minute like that? What does it say on your ticket? We're back on the plane, feeling and looking like failures. We're going through our list of suspects and we're desperately trying to find out
Starting point is 00:24:06 what go back to the list means. My leg's too long for this. Sit down. Lauren, do you want to hold that for you? Give me that. Can I get anything for you ladies? That's quite expensive for a kit kit. I'm actually quite a fan of the sour cream Pringles.
Starting point is 00:24:24 Maybe the chicken Caesar baguette. Of course, no worries, let me get that for you. expensive for a kit kit i'm actually quite a fan of the sour cream pringles uh maybe the chicken caesar baguette of course no worries let me get that for you can't believe we're leaving i feel completely i feel pathetic actually that we're tail between our legs back on a plane without having solved this can i and let's get up the suspect tracker again because i just want to go through like what that what the hell she could mean by that yes go back to your list the only list it could be is the one the midsummer madness party yeah tracker so let's just go through it again because we i feel like we're being stupid yeah so highlighting green the ones that we had on the invite list we've got class i think we've ruled him out
Starting point is 00:25:02 gone pear we've ruled out and his wife mar Per, we've ruled out, and his wife Marie. Steena Yarn, the Slaughterhouse people, not them. Vanya, obviously. It's none of the neighbours. It can't be the neighbours. McKeel ruled out. Inga Lena, who we haven't spoken to, actually. That could be interesting, because she was a fan of vintage clothes.
Starting point is 00:25:24 I actually think that might be really interesting. was a fan of vintage clothes I actually think that might be really interesting to explore more obviously Lars Joel's dad he's just it just doesn't
Starting point is 00:25:35 add up he's so problematic on so many levels he is problematic on many levels beyond the case it's too weird that Vanya would
Starting point is 00:25:43 get in touch with Christine's ex-husband behind her back and keep a secret from her. That's pretty, sorry, I know she's been a bit of like, there's been dubious best friending, but I feel like that's a step too far even for Vanya. We've got Christina's brother, Frederick.
Starting point is 00:25:57 We rolled him out, he was at the party. He's a definite no. Michelle was a no. Annika, she's the one that we... Who was that again? Wasn't she the one that we forgot to invite to the party? Yes. She's the one who we forgot to invite.
Starting point is 00:26:12 Oh, no, what was that bigot? No, what was that? Ingalena told us that she saw Annika and we'd forgotten to invite her. And we tried to call her, remember? I called her. I texted her and we never got a response when we said sorry
Starting point is 00:26:25 about not inviting you hang on we did do a screening interview with Annika that she was the first person we actually spoke to and we just thought she was really lovely and didn't wasn't much more to look into so we just I think we ruled her out really prematurely if Vanya let's say Vanya was speaking to Annika they They're friends as well. They're really good friends. Wasn't she part of the book club? Oh my. And she doesn't live nearby. She lives somewhere else. Like not even in the town where our hotel was.
Starting point is 00:26:54 She lives far away. And that would make sense because if she'd spoken to Vanya, Annika would be like, well, they didn't invite me to the party, but they did speak to me originally. She would have known that we'd have spoken to her at least once for the screening interview and that's what she might have meant by the list it's like the list from screening interview karen not our party list the original list the original list the original original karen wait a minute if we have forgotten
Starting point is 00:27:21 to invite the mastermind to the midsomer Party where we would have then cracked the case. But why would she, what possible reason would she have to not tell Christina? Because it sounds like if she was in a book club and she was friends, like what on earth, what messed up reason would she not have come forward? Well, we don't know. We don't know what the motive is behind this crime. It's something weird.
Starting point is 00:27:41 It is weird. I met Annika and I asked, do we meet each other on Saturday? She didn't know anything. We might have forgotten. Oh no. She should be here. We just made a mistake.
Starting point is 00:28:03 Annika, a member of the book club. A woman we forgot to invite to the Midsummer Party. One of Christina's good friends. One of Vanya's good friends. Could Anika be the mastermind?
Starting point is 00:28:20 We need to immediately search for a link between Anika and the crime. And in our opinion, the best way to do that is through the name on the suitcase label, Johansson. Thank you, everyone, for attending this important meeting. Obviously, we are sitting here with our codebreaker from Season 1 who has extended her skill set into season two and now specializes in
Starting point is 00:28:47 dna and family trees and ancestry and all that kind of business is that correct yes i think so perfect is this your mum yes Yes. Can you try and see if you can screen share, Mum? This is a tree I found already done by somebody else that seems to fit the information that you gave me. So you can see that it was getting the grandparents' names that were key up here. Can you see me? With Christina's help, we've submitted Anika's grandparents
Starting point is 00:29:27 from both sides of her family to our ancestry expert. Oh God, this is a lot of pressure. It's not meant to be relaxing. And then there's the grandparents that you did identify. Joel and Elsa. Yeah. And then there's the grandparents that you did identify. Joel and Elsa. Yeah. And then the other side of the family, grandparents are Sven and Clara. Well, you hadn't given me that, so I don't know about that.
Starting point is 00:29:55 I did give you that. I did. Are you sure you gave me that information? Yeah, I don't want to put you on the spot, but I just tracked back in our messages and i did actually provide the information to you um in the original message let's just let's just move on from that let's not get into a fight or anything no i'm not in a fight give me those grandparents names we've only got eight minutes left okay i feel under pressure that's okay Eight minutes left. Okay, I feel under pressure.
Starting point is 00:30:24 That's okay. Sven. Could be this one here, couldn't it? Because, yeah, it's the right dates. Look. Okay, let's do William Johnson. Yes, I'm getting there. No, I'm just saying it out loud.
Starting point is 00:30:39 Yeah. No fighting. Is there anything here jumping out at you? Oh wait, scroll up a bit. Yeah, we can. Johansson! It's there! What?
Starting point is 00:30:56 It's there, the name, Johansson. Where? Agnes. But what relative is she to Annika? Great, great auntie. Her grandparents, it was linked on the same line as her grandparents. Yeah. So a great auntie or something.
Starting point is 00:31:17 Yeah. So really, you'd be looking for Agnes. Your handsome was born in 1915. You'd be looking for, Yeah, one of her siblings. I did start to research some of it, but everything was in Swedish. Oh, yeah. And I have a little difficulty with that. Yeah, that's been the main problem on this case.
Starting point is 00:31:38 We like a challenge, though, don't we? Yeah. And so do you, Linda Kelby. Oh, I definitely do. Yeah, life's do you, Linda Kelby. I definitely do. Yeah, I like all of them. Pick up. Hey, is that only Jamie or Delana? Was that the voice of the mastermind?
