Previously on this season of Who Shed on the Floor at My Wedding proudly presents the case of the tiny suitcase. When I walked up on my veranda I noticed something hanging. It was this small blue corduroy suit.
Starting point is 00:01:28 The question was, do you know who owned the suit that was left on your mother's veranda? You said no and that was a lie. If the suit fits, wear it. Many strange things have happened, but this is a little odd. And then there was an old leather suitcase on my veranda. Oh, this beautiful woman, Christina. What a love. Christina's cousin.
Starting point is 00:01:53 I am a cousin of Christina. We are cousins. Your house is very close to Christina's, is that correct? We are neighbors. I can see her car. I can see sometimes that the car is home. I have lured her all her life. I think we are more closer now than we'll never be.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Okay, why would somebody like to play this on her? I can see the joke element of getting rid of stuff and let's dump it on Christine's doorstep. But then I would have thought there comes a time when the joke's got to be told and if it isn't then we've got to say well why? You know I'm 62 now and I really hope that I will get the answers before I die. I have been thinking that I will die unknowing about this, but now I'm getting some hope that this will be solved during my lifetime. So this is a lot of pressure that you're placing on us,
Starting point is 00:02:51 Christina. You're saying that the happiness of your death depends on whether or not we can solve this crime. It will be easier for me to die. No, they are so amateurish, it's painful. Get inside. They're very, very amateur detectives. Is there any chance we can see the phone calls you made last night?
Starting point is 00:03:16 We'll have a look at your phone records, shall we? Where does she live? He lives nearby. Perfect. What's his address? Yeah, what's her address? They break every rule in the book. We will be standing here in this exact position until someone confesses. I think this is really extreme. We know. Trust us, we know.
Starting point is 00:03:36 That is just classic reverse theft, the crime. Reverse theft? Yes. I think you're on the wrong track. Parking up the wrong tree. Fine. We have a problem. Yeah, we have a problem. I think you have a problem. I understand that you have a problem. Why does people keep telling us we have problems? Those photos that we sent you of the suit, did you recognise it? I think I did, yes. It belongs to Joelle. I have been lying to you and I will not lie anymore. Because I do think it's somebody close to her.
Starting point is 00:04:11 I was delivering the suitcase. Someone asked me to deliver it outside Christina's house. It feels like it's an outsider, not an insider, although the insider may have been the instigator. There are one or more persons who are involved. Why would any of them want to do that? Oh, is that? What? Is that the maiden? Your husband?
Starting point is 00:04:39 Yeah. Oh! Wait a minute, if we had forgotten to invite the mastermind to the midsummer party where we would have been creating the case. Why doesn't this person want me to know? Is that person angry with me? Does that person want me to feel bad?
Starting point is 00:04:55 Does that person care for me in a way? Yes. You never take for granted that even in something like this, the people who might get involved may have their own agenda and it may not be nice. You must be careful on how you approach. These elderly Swedish ladies are driving me to the point of insanity. I can't, I can't cope anymore.
Starting point is 00:05:23 What the fuck happened there, seriously? She's highlighted in green in our suspect tracker, which means like major, major suspect above all other suspects that we did bother to interview. And in the notes it said, Christina worked very closely with her at the time. Why on earth did we not speak to her? Why on earth did we not speak to her? Why on earth did we not speak to her? It's the only person from our suspect record. Just didn't bother the chat to.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Has a genuine connection with Christina. And is really close to Vanya. And is really close to Vanya. I mean, we've got a lot to learn. I do think it's a big lesson. I don't think we should berate ourselves too much. I want to berate myself. I want to work out the ins and outs of this
Starting point is 00:06:10 because this makes me feel a little bit sick. And I'm not even just saying this for the chat. I feel ill. We went to Sweden. We were basically handed on a plane. We spoke to her. We followed up on all of our screening interview calls. She's highlighted as a suspect. We didn't even bother to invite her to the party.
Starting point is 00:06:29 We spent so much going out to Sweden, bringing Professor Mike Berry out. Like, I just... We're excited to speak to you today, Christina. We've got a little bit to talk about with you tonight. Oh, that's so exciting. First of all, I would say apologies because I think we haven't been the best detectives we could be. We might have forgotten someone important. Quite fundamental.
Starting point is 00:07:01 That's so funny. I'm so curious. I was staying over at Inga Lena's last week and we came to discuss Annika. Annika, Annika. Oh! Check, pop. We really discussed her on the subject who would have been able to keep quiet for so long. But then we started to talk about Annika.
Starting point is 00:07:23 Another thing that made me think of her, Vania had a little troublesome period here when we were brewing beer. She talked about how bad she felt about this, that she couldn't tell us who it were. And then she said, you know that I'm not good at having people being mad at me. And that made me think, who of the people that is in our area
Starting point is 00:07:52 would react in that way that make Vanja say this? Because you know something about a person when you think that that could be the result of telling it. Yes, you can react. Annika would have to be the result of telling it. Yes, you can react. Annika would have to be the one to reveal it because she's not allowed to do that because she'll get in trouble. Yeah, there's something here. When was the last time you saw Annika, Christina?
Starting point is 00:08:17 What's your relationship been like? How often have you seen each other since this crime happened in 2011? We work together, so we saw each other not every day, but perhaps three days a week. Wow, so how does that make you feel? I can say that I am impressed. I am really impressed, but I don't have so strong feelings about that
Starting point is 00:08:38 than about that Vanya could keep this secret because we have been more close but Anika and I has a really good relation so it is really strange. But is Vanya better friends with Anika or is she better friends with you? With me. Vanya have met Anika through me. You delivered her a potential criminal mastermind. Yeah. I cannot believe that today is the day that we have come to the same conclusion. Why did we leave her so fast?
Starting point is 00:09:16 She was around all the time when this happened. Christina, you are asking a question that we've been asking ourselves earlier today. Why did we leave out such an important potential suspect? We followed up with Fania. We said, did you get our little present? I think this person is a little bit disappointed. Oh no. Yes. Because we haven't gone to see them?
Starting point is 00:09:51 Because you haven't contacted this person during the summer. It's a bit complicated because as I said, It had been much easier if this person had been more willing to cooperate. Very important clue because she says, all I will say is that you have spoken to the person that did the crime, but you didn't meet them when you came to Sweden and they feel very disappointed and left out that we didn't get in touch with them in Sweden. Because she didn't get invited to Midsummer. She gets angry about that kind of things being left out. She's angry at us. She could be. I haven't, we haven't talked about you so God she's pissed off at us. But Christina why do you think she lied to you for all these years?
Starting point is 00:10:46 You've spoken to her about this crime and it's been like, you know, driving you crazy and you must have spoken to her about it so many times and she just pretended not to know. Yeah, that's very interesting. That has something new about her personality that I didn't know. I must warn you then because you have to soften her up if she feels that you have forgotten her. Yeah, so she's angry with us and we need to kind of butter her up a little bit. Yeah, you have. I wish we were coming back to Sweden. What do you think is the best way knowing that she's angry with us?
Starting point is 00:11:28 What is the best way to approach, to involve her again? A serious apology. That is important, I think, that you didn't come back to her, as you said, because she could be remembering that. Oh my God. So we're going to have to come crawling back, seeking for your forgiveness. I can't believe she's angry at me.
Starting point is 00:11:51 I'm not gonna be able to sleep tonight. I'm so stressed. So we really fucked up. So she's not only offended, she's got no reason to want to speak to us. Yeah. Do you remember Mike Berry in the car one day? He's like, isn't it funny that all of your suspects are men?
Starting point is 00:12:05 And there was no women on the list. That should have been an indication that we were a little bit biased in the way that we were conducting the investigation. So how are you gonna get our attention? ["The New York Times"] ["The New York Times"] ["The New York Times"]
Starting point is 00:12:18 ["The New York Times"] ["The New York Times"] ["The New York Times"] ["The New York Times"] ["The New York Times"] ["The New York Times"] ["The New York Times"] ["The New York Times"] ["The New York Times"] ["The New York Times"] ["The New York Times"] Hi Annika, we hope you're well and enjoying the summer. We wanted to reach out and apologise for not inviting you to the Midsomer party. Truth be told, we were really overwhelmed
Starting point is 00:12:30 with all the organisation it took and it was just a massive oversight on our part. Definitely not intentional. Hi Annika, happy Sunday, hope you enjoyed this nice and clear support on my behalf. Just following up to see if you received our last email and if you'd be available to have a quick call this week. We'd love to hear your best wishes and now I'm going to ask you a couple of questions. We did try calling you when you were in Black Lake to see if you were able to have a quick call this week. We feel nice to in the real world. But I don't think you're a good day that day. Just following up. See if you see the last email.
Starting point is 00:13:08 That's what she wrote. You have a spare 15 minutes free this week. Do you want to ask her any questions? And then she's just kind of gone quiet on us. She just has not responded. For weeks now. She doesn't really want to speak to us is the point. She knows we've found out who it is and it's her. I think we definitely know for sure that,
Starting point is 00:13:34 and I can't even believe I'm saying this, but we have to go back to Sweden. We have to go back. We can't go back to Sweden. I can't believe we have to go back there. It's a big, big thing to return to Sweden just to confront this woman, because what if it's not her? Does it not make you really wonder why she's being so stubborn at ignoring us?
Starting point is 00:13:58 The whole point of doing this was a joke, so I really don't understand why she's getting so funny about it unless it's just being left out and feeling a bit sulky about it. There's something going on and I won't be linked to the motive so that's why we need to just like physically go there and corner her. The reason why she's not wanting to talk is because she's obviously guilty and she's been caught, her ruse is up and she doesn't want to have that conversation. It's the same as running away from us, that's what she's doing. She's getting a kick out of being really difficult. She got a kick out of leaving a suitcase on somebody's doorstep 12 years ago. I think you have to go and bring the suitcase to her and just be like,
Starting point is 00:14:38 here it is, in the chat, do you want this back? Or not, because actually Christina is keeping all of her Midsummer Murders DVDs in there, so she doesn't necessarily have to have it back. It's quite handy. No, but she wants it back. We know that the perpetrator wants the suitcase back. I say, okay, now we've got some bargaining chip then. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:00 A confession for a suitcase. Confession for a suitcase. This is the finale of the case of the tiny suitcase. On the 17th of July I sent the following email. Annika, we are writing to provide you a little more context about who we are, what we do and why we do it. And to ask you one very last time if you will help us. Karen, Helen and I make light-hearted and fun comedy podcasts because we are passionate about trying to spread joy around the world. Blah blah blah blah blah, sob story, blah
Starting point is 00:15:38 blah blah blah blah. We've invested a lot of our free time making this podcast in Sweden, but unfortunately we cannot let this go until we solve the case, get a confession and find out how this story really ends. At the moment we are sad because it feels like our efforts over the last couple of years have been in vain, both for us and for Christina. We know we're screwed up when we failed to invite you to the midsummer party that we organized last year and we are very very worried that we offended you. We really hope you can forgive us. Now we have found quite a few clues that point to you being the genius slash mastermind behind this prank and we are now convinced that it was you who
Starting point is 00:16:26 asked Vanya to leave the suitcase on Christina's porch. For that in our opinion you deserve a big round of applause. Here you can see our list of facts and clues that lead to this conclusion. Blah blah blah blah blah, sincerely Lauren, Karen and Helen. One day later on the 18th of July I received a response. Hello, then it is obviously time for some clarifying information. Vanya has apparently admitted that she left the suitcase with Christina. Why she left out her other involvement in the matter is unclear to me, but it could be due to various things. Does she want to avoid responsibility by blaming me, which I understand she has done, more or less explicitly?
Starting point is 00:17:49 Has she repressed the course of events, chosen to forget it, or has actually forgotten? I don't know, it's been a long time. If it is the latter option, it seems that my memory is better than hers. Anyway, this is how it went. Christina, Vanya, Busa, Thomas and I had a book club. At one of our gatherings, Christina told us about the tiny suit that suddenly appeared
Starting point is 00:18:28 on her porch, and she couldn't figure out where it came from. One of the rest of us in the circle, and I know it wasn't either Thomas or me and I'm not sure if it was Fania or Busa who hatched the idea but all four then participated in the planning and get to share the responsibility. My contribution was the bag as I had a suitable one given to me by my grandfather. Since we wanted it to look like a man who put his bag down there and wanted to move in. Christina was the only one in the gang who was single.
Starting point is 00:19:17 It was mostly Tomas and Busa who put in the items. I think Vanya also contributed something and then undertook to put the bag there. Yes, and then time passed. It is okay to use this information, which is completely true, regardless of what others might have said. Anika. Is best friend Vanya more involved than she's been letting on?
Starting point is 00:19:48 Is the whole book club in on this? A network of criminal masterminds love to get the book club together for a sort of lunch where we pretty much ambush them. They have no idea we're going to be there. It would be good to get some props and that could be basically if we recreate the suitcase because I would love to have like five pairs of male undies to throw at their faces kind of do an aggressive pace around and be like why were these in the bag and throw a pair at each of them. Awesome so you telling me that I have to find some used male underpants?
Starting point is 00:20:40 Vanya and Annika absolutely they like each other. Bosse I'm not sure but we could try. I think he would like to meet up. Yeah and Bosse remind me was the man who used to date Vanya. He was living here for 10 years. Yes okay. I think the best thing would be if I invited them here. So I think it's better to just kind of a reunion. It would be nice to meet you. So you're just going to have a nice casual lunch and then, you know, they'll come over. Probably Lauren is, I imagine, hiding behind a lamp or in one of your lovely plants in the living room.
Starting point is 00:21:22 And then they sort of sit down, don't notice anything. She's probably having waited there for about 45 minutes, getting cramped in a hunched position. And then you sort of, you know, start having some drinks and it's all very lovely. And then suddenly there's a Russell in the corner. How about that Lauren, does that feel good to you? Well, I don't understand why I would have to wait
Starting point is 00:21:40 behind a lamp, I won't sit behind a lamp. And like, why would kind of just be upstairs and then I just come down? Or maybe I just ring the doorbell and I'm like, police. I've got a warrant. Open up. And I'll learn all of that in Swedish. Police. Police. Police. Yeah. And I'll start kicking the door. Will they know who Lauren is when she bursts in? No, probably not. They'll be like, what the hell's going on? Vanuatu.
Starting point is 00:22:10 Everyone's going to be alarmed. What we want to do, Christina, is actually rebuild the whole suitcase context. We'll find a Kinasen comic book. We'll have the Hawaiian shirt. I want to throw a pair of male underwear at their faces and be like, where did you find these? If Bossa comes, I think you should definitely have some used female underwear and throw those at him just so he knows what it feels like.
Starting point is 00:22:33 Helen's freaking out. There's no difference in what he did. The male underpants were either from Thomas or Bossa. Used. They were used. You meant used but washed. Used but washed. Used but washed.
Starting point is 00:22:44 But also, you know how there were pantyhose in the suitcase? I want to have some pantyhose and drape them around someone's shoulder and kind of tug at them a little bit with the pantyhose. We'll get on the case of finding some used but washed male and female underwear and some pantyhose for Lauren to play and tantalize our perpetrators with. Attention passengers. It's brilliant. Helen.
Starting point is 00:23:15 Right, we're off. So guys, oh you're going the right way. So guys we're back again. We're back in Sweden on the road. Why are we back? We're back because we suck. Helen, can you stop? Okay, we're back in Sweden because we suck and we couldn't solve the crime the first time. And now we're lost in Sweden going the wrong way, but it's okay. We're going to turn around. We're going to go back to the right direction, back to Black Lake. It's a different vibe because we have caught the perpetrators and we're honing in on them. And it's a different sense because we are euphoric.
Starting point is 00:23:56 We are on the path to success and success starts tomorrow. Success starts at one o'clock tomorrow. At one o'clock tomorrow we will be parked in a bush waiting for the message from Christina to say they're here. And we're going to bang on the door and scream police! And then someone's gonna come to the door and we're gonna flash our warrant and we're gonna say this warrant has been issued by the Swedish government
Starting point is 00:24:28 and permits us to enter this house and search all things and people. And animals. And animals. So we're allowed to frisk anyone we want that is existing in that residence at that given moment. That's what the warrant says. We don't know Bossa. We don't actually
Starting point is 00:24:45 he's the only person we don't know. What do you know about him? Nothing. Christina has invited him to her house for like a multiple day sleepover because he's really good at fixing things I think he's like a handyman or something so all I know is that he's good with his hand. I think we need to set the scene so the book club full of the perpetrators were Vanya, Annika, Christina, Bossa and another man called Thomas. Thomas is not coming tomorrow. He's been ruled out. He's been ruled out. My concern is we don't know who put the male worn but washed underpants in the suitcase and we're going all guns blazing. You've got some props, some of Yule's...
Starting point is 00:25:27 Undies. Underwear in your bag. You're gonna... His underwear, did you have to... I asked him if he would give me a pair that he felt comfortable with me bringing and he just said, just get some that don't have holes in them. He gave me access to his undies.
Starting point is 00:25:41 That's pretty good. So you take his most pristine pair of boxers. Oh, because he'd already packed for Sweden himself. So he'd already taken his top five pairs. Can we put them on our Instagram page, his underwear? Yeah. So that's fine. And I also got his Hawaiian shirt. Basically, you're going to throw your pants at Bossa,
Starting point is 00:25:57 this poor man who you've never met before. So they're coming for a nice reunion at Christina's, but they don't know that we're here. They don't know we're in town. It's an ambush. for a nice reunion at Christina's but they don't know that we're here. They don't know we're in town. It's an ambush. I think that tomorrow is going to be excruciating. It's intense.
Starting point is 00:26:12 It's intense. I just find it very aggressive. All these odd people, you could give somebody a hot stuck. I might stay in the car. No you're not staying in the car. Okay but like... This is the finale. No, you're not staying in the car. Okay. But like... This is the finale. This is excruciating.
Starting point is 00:26:28 If they're not laughing, if they look actually scared, or one of them goes into some sort of like cardiac arrest, then we'll stop. I'm actually worried about reading Anika's email out because Anika's email incriminates Vanya more than she is aware of. Annika is saying that she is not the mastermind, and that it's either Busa or Vanya,
Starting point is 00:26:51 and Vanya has been potentially lying to us this whole time. This is huge, and Christina doesn't know about any of this either. So she has no idea about this email. She is saying her part in this is that she gave Vanya a suitcase. Empty suitcase. she gave Vanya a suitcase. An empty suitcase. And then Vanya compiled it.
Starting point is 00:27:08 Which means that Vanya has done the most work in this crime. Yeah. She's blocked it out or she's been lying to us. I think, does it matter? Kristina's best friend. Does it matter? I think it matters. I think your one objective is to understand how their relationship has been affected by this.
Starting point is 00:27:28 Vanya and Christina? Probably not at all, I hope. Well then that's... Well then that's you done. Then don't bother coming. If you've already drawn your own conclusion, then don't bother coming. Just do one job, please. I'm imagining that it's not impacted their friendship. Cool, but how about we don't imagine and we just do it. But yeah, so I'm happy to find that out.
Starting point is 00:27:50 Right, thank you. If tomorrow goes, the best it could possibly go... Answers. What does it look like? Answers. Truth, answers, resolution for Christina. Did you bring a shirt? Yeah, I've got three shirts.
Starting point is 00:28:02 So how come we only have to wear shirts now and not ties all of a sudden? Because it's cats out of the bag, isn't it? They know who. We're like knocking on their door going, police. Oh, the tie was to hide it. Oh my god. No, I knew that. I just...
Starting point is 00:28:14 Oh god, I'm tired. Oh hello. I just wanted to ask you how you are feeling about what we're doing tomorrow, if you know what we're doing tomorrow or if there's any concerns. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on your underwear. Yeah, well that's been a wish of yours for a while hasn't it? It has, yeah. Got a dream big. Yeah, I'm happy to provide that to make the dream a reality.
Starting point is 00:28:41 That's perfect. Yeah, my grabby little paws on your silky drawers. God. Okay. It's the morning of the ambush. We're in the hotel. I'm gonna find Detective Lauren Kilby, because I'm just a bit worried about how unprepared we are for what we're about to do. Let's go see if she's in her room
Starting point is 00:29:14 so I can share my concerns. Hello? Ah. Oh. I'm, um... I'm just a bit worried about that we're a bit unprepared for what we're about to do. Why? I just feel like we haven't really thought through what we're doing and we don't know anyone really that well to be confronting them this way. But I think it'll be fine. That's kind of what we do, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:29:44 Surprising them and shocking them. Yeah. Come in. Welcome to my room. Why is it so wet? Why is there water on the floor? It's like you've shaken yourself like a dog to get dry. Yeah I just opened that sparkling water and it exploded. This is the only way I remember how to put our hidden mics on so it's hiding in plain sight. Yeah I reckon it's obvious, they need to know we're recording.
Starting point is 00:30:09 That's their way of consenting. Yeah. We need to read each other like an open book. Yeah. We need to know what the other person is thinking and help them move situations forward or change situations depending on what happens. I think the key is adaptability today. We're gonna have to sense if we're upsetting people how to react to that. If it's time to step it up a gear and apply more pressure we'll be communicating that through looks. Through looks only. Looks only. If it gets really bad I think we need a safe word between us when we say this that we have to stop. I think a good idea yeah. I think we have to say or change the
Starting point is 00:30:45 tone completely or just massively change the strategy because something's not working so I think we're like oh do you want a cup of tea just something like that. Do you want a cup of calming tea? Chamomile tea. Chamomile tea. It's the morning of the book club ambush. We're parked in the bushes around the corner from Christina's house, awaiting the message from her to tell us it's time. On the drive over we receive some rather unfortunate news. And that is that Annika is not attending the book club reunion today. She told Christina she was sick.
Starting point is 00:31:24 But we think she is suspicious and knows that something's going on. So now we have a three-part strategy to confront the book club. Phase one, force entry to book club reunion and knock down the door. Phase two, confront Vanya and Busa physically and emotionally with the items they left on Christina's doorstep. And finally, phase three. Conduct a stakeout at Anika's house, return the suitcase and confront the mastermind once and for all. Initiate phase one, knock down the door. Alright, here we go. Oh my god.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Why is that card boot open? Because it's all his supplies. I thought it was red. No, it's white. Who key is it? Well, it's nice to be around that. Alright, let's do this. Alright, let's go. Wait, I've got to turn the car off. Where's the key? In the ignition? Doesn't have an ignition.
Starting point is 00:32:22 Oh my god, I've lost the car key. Where's the car key? Just turn it off. I need to find the car key. You would have put it in your pocket. Oh, wait, we've got to go to the next one. Go in there. Next door. Wrong door. Open up, police!
Starting point is 00:33:07 Open up, police! Open up, police! I need a whisky. Laughter Initiate phase two, confront Vanya and Busa. Have a seat, over here. I know we came to the door and you thought we were police, but that was a joke. Because we're actually here, because we hear that there's a book club meetup on today and we like book clubs.
Starting point is 00:33:52 This is a large suitcase that I'm holding. What's that? I don't know there was something in there, that's weird. Colorline Furies. Does this look familiar to a person in this room? I think it's ugly. Does this item inside the bag resonate with you Vanya? No. Stand up please Karen. Hold that bag. Let me have another look to see what's inside this.
Starting point is 00:34:26 Oh what's that? That's nice. That's a Hawaiian shirt. Does this type of shirt mean anything to you? Not at all. Not at all? You seem very passionate in your response. You really are quite defensive about that. Okay well let's see what it looks like on shall we? Yep do you recognize those? No. Can I sing comic book? Can you tuck that into your pocket there? And finally. Now bossa, I'm holding up a pair of underwear, male underwear that are worn but washed. Do these look familiar to you? Yeah. Okay, they're probably a bit too big for you as well.
Starting point is 00:35:20 I didn't realise you were so petite. They are large. Yes, they are large. They're your he said I could bring them. So these do look yes oh my god they're the same they're exactly the same. I was not expecting this. Horsa has pulled down his pants and he is revealing to us that he's the exact same pair of underwear on. It's got the same lining down the penis area. It's got the same waistband, high-waisted, to prevent the plumbers from cramping. But they are large.
Starting point is 00:35:51 But they are large, yes. I wear medium. Medium. Okay. Karen's now got this Hawaiian shirt, the male underpants, the goggles, the canarsen, and the toiletry bag attached to her. Do you know what Karen is doing right now? Apart from looking like an idiot?
Starting point is 00:36:09 She is wearing all of the items that were found in the suitcase that somebody left on Christina's veranda. Is this the kind of person you would want sleeping over at your house? Christina, is this the kind of person you would want sleeping over at your house. LAUGHTER Christina, is this the kind of person you would let into your house and stay the night? Oh, I don't think so.
Starting point is 00:36:32 Thank you, Karen. You look a bit traumatised, Vanya. Yeah. Is there anything you'd like to say to the victim of your crime? I hope you'll still with me my friend. Yes, I will. So you accept the friendship, you accept Vanya's involvement in this crime? Yes.
Starting point is 00:37:03 And you forgive her? Yes, I forgive you. Are you sorry? No. No, no. No, I'm not sorry. No. I should have been.
Starting point is 00:37:15 For your involvement. I don't feel so involved. As some of you know, we have had a confession before we came to Sweden this time. We were looking for the mastermind of this crime. And when we finally cracked the case and we worked out who the mastermind was, we sent her an email. We sent her probably five emails.
Starting point is 00:37:44 And we flat out asked her, was it you who is the mastermind of this crime? She responded, I've got her confession here and let me just say it's a little bit incriminating for the two of you. So Annika believes that the book club were involved. that the book club were involved. So she has said that she is aware that you have admitted that it was you
Starting point is 00:38:11 who placed the suitcase. But she's also aware that you have left out your involvement beyond dropping the suitcase off. So she is telling us that you were more involved. Yeah, but does she admit that she is the most minded or? I'll tell you how she sees it. She does agree that potentially there's some memory loss because it's 13 years but she has a very good memory. The way she tells us
Starting point is 00:38:51 the information is exactly how she believes it happened. We don't know if she's lying of course. So this is how she said it went. At one of our gatherings Christina told us about the little suit that suddenly appeared on her porch, and she couldn't figure out where it came from. One of the rest of us in the circle, and I know it wasn't either Thomas or me, and I'm not sure if it was Vania or Busa, who hatched the idea? I don't remember that I took the idea. I was the one who came with this new idea, but I can't say. Maybe. But it is possible? Yes. It was mostly Thomas and Busse who put in the items. So the inconsistencies in the story are that... What do you find funny?
Starting point is 00:40:01 What do you find funny? Cause I hear what you say. But he don't remember. Do you think it's not possible that you could have been involved? Do you think it's possible? No. No. No.
Starting point is 00:40:16 Do you think Annika is lying? I don't know. I don't know her so well. This is problematic, you understand, because we're trying to close the case and we want it to be closed with all loose ends tied up. We promised something to our victim, Christina. We told her we would expose the truth
Starting point is 00:40:38 and right now we have conflicting stories that make us a bit confused and also make our victim a bit confused. So we've got one person who has a very clear memory that puts you all in the frame. We've got another person, and we do honestly, we are grateful for you coming forward with that piece of information. We've verified that you definitely placed the item here,
Starting point is 00:41:02 but that's the only piece of information we can verify with two stories. One person saying this, one person saying this, one person saying this. So you understand how difficult this is for us detectives. Yes, yes, yes. And it's obvious that these male clothes, Yeah. they came from either you or Thomas.
Starting point is 00:41:24 I have a feeling, very strong feeling, that the idea was not coming from me. But that leaves one person, Bosse. No. She's saying the idea came from either Vania or Bosse. If you're saying it definitely wasn't you, then you're saying it was definitely Bosse. I can't say anything about this. I can. Yeah, you can,. I can't say anything about this. I can. Yeah, you can, but I can't.
Starting point is 00:41:48 You remember Annika being the mastermind, and she remembers either one of you two being the mastermind. And we cannot, I mean, she's not here to defend herself, so we can't say, you know, she's lying or she's not lying. But it's a shame that she's not here, because now we can't find out who the mastermind was. But it makes a lot of sense. So you lived together at the time in Black Lake. So it
Starting point is 00:42:11 sounds to me very much like Annika came up with this idea to actually drive to meet you. I reckon she came with a suitcase saying, look, here's a suitcase. You go and fill it with something funny. You then took an empty suitcase back to your house and you... Empty or with some more things in it and I put the rest in it maybe. The partially filled suitcase with some items from Thomas and Annika was then handed over to Vanya. Vanya then went back home and you finished filling the items and then you left it on Christine's veranda.
Starting point is 00:42:45 That's the part that I think Annika's saying you were more involved than you had. Yeah, I mean, she thinks that means that I'm more in... Yeah, because you put a couple of items in there as well. I'm doing the finishing. Finishing touch. You never know the true story about your friends. You don't know what they are capable of.
Starting point is 00:43:06 They can be capable of much more things than you ever thought. Not in a bad way, but it's really like that. I had no idea that you were involved. I wouldn't have guessed. That's why I don't think it's me who had the first idea. I've never done it before, because I think it's not really me. To be this, most of mine. But if someone tells me to help, yes, I'm always helping, yes.
Starting point is 00:43:40 I can get one line from you, if I could get you to say, I am Vanya and this is my confession. I am a reverse thief. That would mean the world, please. I want to stop there. That's enough. I want to stop there. Kemalati.
Starting point is 00:43:59 Yeah. Kemalati, yeah. Are you satisfied with the case? Very satisfied. I'm so happy that it's solved. We're quite good, aren't we? Yeah, you're really good. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:44:12 Can you name three emotions that you felt on this journey we've been on together? Curiosity. Surprised. Very surprised. At what? At Vanya. Oh, at Vanya. Not at Vanya, okay not at our picnic.
Starting point is 00:44:26 No no no no. I've been impressed by you. We've impressed our first client. Sounds really good. It actually feels really good. I feel jubilant. Has somebody planted a tiny unwanted item on your veranda? Did someone shit on the floor at your wedding?
Starting point is 00:44:52 Has someone maybe sent some strange things like buckets of mayonnaise to your home? I don't even like mayonnaise. Did they push hot dogs through your letterbox? What a waste of a hot dog. Hell, I'm a victim of a non-crime crime. If a non-crime crime has been committed against you, you may be entitled to pro bono detective services. Go to www.whoshareontheproaratmywedding.com today and report your non-crime crime. I am Detective Lauren Kilby,
Starting point is 00:45:27 and together with Assistant to the Detective Karen Whitehouse and Assistant to the Assistant to the Detective Helen McLaughlin, we can bring criminals to justice. Do you think Lauren Kilby, your lover, is the same person as Detective Lauren Kilby? Not really, no. Do you have romantic feelings for both Lauren Kilby and Detective Lauren Kilby? I mean especially Detective Lauren Kilby.
Starting point is 00:45:53 Is that your preference, detective? Is it a fetish? Would you describe it as a fetish? Err, no. I don't think so. What is it then? Erm... Express yourself. Don't be shy. It's a very odd question. It's not that odd.
Starting point is 00:46:11 It is pretty odd. Napoleon's relationship with Lauren Kilby and Detective Lauren Kilby, that's pretty good. I would describe us, and Helen is in here as well, she's sat on a chair looking at her phone not involved in this, but I would describe us four as having a very complicated relationship. Yeah. Who did you feel least comfortable unleashing on your family out of Detective Lauren Kilby, Helen and myself? Equally the two of you, especially the two of you together. You need to be separated regularly. Okay, thanks for the advice. Why don't you just continue relaxing on your phone in the rocking chair over there, not even close to a microphone.
Starting point is 00:46:49 We're just busy podcasting, we're just making a podcast, you're just sorry to interrupt you. We came to Sweden to record the finale and you're just relaxing. You haven't even taken off your full forensic outfit after our photo shoot. You've got it half done, you look like you're on the toilet with your pants down. You are the perpetrator of the first crime. Nah, I didn't put it back. I can't help if somebody like lends my suit and then somebody puts it back. That's not really on me, is it? It was your suit that was getting returned. Where do you think that came from, that suit?
Starting point is 00:47:24 Kind of feels like something you get from your grandparents maybe? For like some kind of school? It's not from your grandparents. My mum, Linda, questioned your grandmother and she doesn't recognise the suit. Okay, now it's probably me biking into the little suit store and buying it myself than I would imagine. I'd like you to drop that attitude actually
Starting point is 00:47:43 because this is actually quite serious. You will. Is there anything you'd like to say to your mother knowing that you have inflicted 13 years of worry on her? Sorry that you lent out my corduroy suit without asking me permission and then forgot about it. And, cautious. You literally wasted two years of Lauren and I's life.
Starting point is 00:48:05 Like, if you had recognized that, we'd be like, oh cool, well we can find another crime and we can investigate, but instead we've had to go on a massive wild goose chase in Sweden. All because of you. Your memory. You're welcome. Are you aware that the second crime
Starting point is 00:48:19 was inspired by the first? Oh yeah. And that's proven by Annika's email when she confessed. She said we were inspired by the tiny suit story and as a result we wanted it to feel like a man was moving in. So the whole... both crimes have been committed because of you. Yeah. It just goes to show the tiniest inaction can be a sort of snowball effect. Initiate phase three, stakeout at Annika's house to confront the mastermind. So we're going to arrive, it's like a bit of a weird stakeout.
Starting point is 00:49:03 What I didn't know until just now is that I thought it was just a house, a standalone house, and that you knock on the door and they're there. But apparently she lives in a flat, so there's two doors we need to get in. So are you going to ring to get in the first door, or are you just going to get in seeing as you have the code? We're not using the code. Annika lives inside an apartment.
Starting point is 00:49:24 Christina knows another person that lives inside that apartment. So she has managed to get us the code to get through the first door. Three minutes away, guys. Oh my god. Oh no. We don't have any strategy. I'm peckish. There's nobody else peckish. Helen. I thought you said that cops are supposed to always be like eating.
Starting point is 00:49:43 We're going to go and eat burgers instead. Helen. Helen, we do not priorit are supposed to always be like eating you. We're going to go and eat burgers instead. Helen. Helen, we do not prioritise food over the finale of this podcast. This is going to be really excruciating. Oh. And then left. Okay guys, she lives on the ground floor which means her windows can see us.
Starting point is 00:50:01 We need to drive a bit further before we start. That's three there. That's the door. Which one? Let's go here. Park here now. So we need to be very careful because she's going to see us approach her house. We just, we have to be like, we wanted to give you a suitcase. We'll keep it very simple because we don't know what reaction we're going to get. And then however she seems. We can push for more. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:22 So do you think we'll get her to be able to say, I am Annika and this is my confession? And this is my suitcase? And this is my story? No, because she's not going to give us the story. I don't think she's going to give you the time of fucking day. Anything you get beyond leave me alone I think is a bonus. Come on then you have to do the lunatics.
Starting point is 00:50:43 Fuck. Okay. That's freezing. Which one is that? What does it say? It says plus four and then put the code in I think. B first or? What does this say? What was the code to get in? I think we have to go in. I think we have to go into the house.
Starting point is 00:51:20 Nothing's working. Open. Calling. You've got to have that calling. Calling? It doesn't seem to be working. It's working. Open. Calling. You've got to have that calling. Calling. Inventor's Sorrow. It doesn't seem to be working. It's broken. It's not broken that you always go to panic that things are broken when they're not.
Starting point is 00:51:35 It's broken. B. Open sesame. We're in. We are seeing a friend. Friend. Yeah, sorry. Annika. Okay, good. Seen the fish? No. Where? Who?
Starting point is 00:52:07 Annika. Okay. Tack. Tack. Shit. Alright, let's do this. She pointed at that one. Yep.
Starting point is 00:52:18 Look at natural, because they've got a peephole thing. Twenty. Twenty? Oh yeah. Oh, it's on the door. It's on the door. It says it's on the door. not getting it at all because they've got a paper hole thing 20? 20? oh yeah oh it's on the door, it's on the door, it sees it oh wow, okay are you near? coughing? oh god
Starting point is 00:52:38 i think we just have to keep it very quick yep now it's going to the door, i can hear it coughing though better i can hear it coughing and now it's going to the door. I can hear her coughing. I can hear her coughing and now it's going to the door. What are we going to do though? We're going to have to just leave the suitcase. What outside? Yeah. No, it's too precious to her. Let's just wait a few minutes. They might need some time to hear they're coming. I can hear it. No, don't look shocked because she can look through that thing and see you. Look cute and nice and happy.
Starting point is 00:53:06 It looks like we're just having a nice time. Quick delivery. No big deal. No don't do faces like that. Yeah yeah yeah sorry. Happy happy. Yeah happy. Yeah cos they're gonna be looking through that. It's fine for you because you've positioned yourself away from the people. Yeah no no the people has a fish eye so they can see me. You're even...
Starting point is 00:53:28 The logistics of the people. I don't think we can ring it a second time, can we? No. I think they're watching TV though. There's clapping. There was clapping. I think they didn't hear it. I'm going to do it one more time. Let's do it one more time. Did it make that noise? Did it make that noise? Smile. Look happy. Friendly delivery.
Starting point is 00:54:02 Now it's gone silent inside. I can't hear anything. Can you imagine if she's just on the other side of the door? Yeah, watching us. Watching us listening. I can hear something happening inside. I'm actually shaking. Okay, well she's not coming out so... I think we have to leave it. I think we have to leave it on her veranda bit. We're perpetuating the crime. This is exactly what she did.
Starting point is 00:54:24 But she had a choice. We're perpetuating the crime. This is exactly what she did. But she had a choice. We don't. I think put it down. We have to leave it here and hope no one steals it. This is so weird. I can hear her inside though. Why is she not coming out? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:54:35 She does not want to see us. She knows we're here. Yeah. She's probably looking through the peephole right now. Yeah, put it down. Yep. Yeah, put it down. We could knock on her window. No.
Starting point is 00:54:53 Why? We're not knocking on an old lady's window. Disaster. It's a disaster. She ignored us. We were clapping and she didn't answer. We were clapping and she didn't answer. Laughing and watching TV and then every time, like, we only buzzed twice and then it would
Starting point is 00:55:09 fall silent. Why did she not, we know she's inside. I am questioning this choice of podcast right now. Okay, now turn all the car lights off. It's dark now. And can you message Christina because I need to keep this on. Okay, let me call. Should I call her?
Starting point is 00:55:25 Yep. Hello. Hello Christina. Hello. Hello. We have just deposited the suitcase outside Annika's door. Do you mind texting her saying the girls have left the suitcase so you can collect it? Just to be sure she gets it. Just so she gets it.
Starting point is 00:55:44 Shall I text her that you have put it outside her door? Yes gets it yes and we've left brilliant thank you so much we're gonna wait yeah okay bye I think my face is illuminated by the phone light is that can I be saying I think she's gonna do it you know she through the fish-eye lens and then she's going to see no one's there and then she's going to open the door. Yeah. She's going to come out with a velvet overcoat and smoking a cigar, like the badass criminal she is. What if somebody calls the police on us? They're not going to do that, are they? Who? What's our crime? Well, loitering with intent.
Starting point is 00:56:23 Loitering with intent is not a crime. This is what a stakeout feels like guys but this is actually what people do this is what the real police do. I think the windows getting stained from my hand. Just don't breathe so heavily. Don't they normally have snacks for stakeouts? Well we've just had a whole burger and chips and chicken nuggets so I think that will do. Helen you're breathing, your breathing is fogging up the window. Who's is? Helen's. Come on Annika, come on open the door. Open the door. And I wonder what she's wearing. Why does that matter? Yeah, I creep. Why is she not coming to the door? Guys, I'm pretty sure she would see a car outside, like,
Starting point is 00:57:06 would anyone ever be parked right outside her door? I don't think she'll see the car through the peephole. We're so far away. Why do we need to see her again? I just want to see... We all need to clap eyes on this, I suppose. We need closure. We'll wait five minutes and then we'll drive around the block. I mean, she's waited 14 years, what's another 20 minutes to her? I just know she was looking through the peephole at us
Starting point is 00:57:27 and you keep making those like kind of weird faces. Well, yeah, I couldn't help it. You were hiding away. You thought you weren't in view because it was a fish eye, but... Stop talking about it being fish eye. You're the one that's pointing it out. Is that the Northern Lights or is that smoke?
Starting point is 00:57:46 It's not Northern Lights. Just do one thing, Annika. Tippi tippi tip tap. One thing. It's a game of chicken, isn't it? It's a test. Who's going to give in first? Are we gonna drive off or is she gonna come and get the suitcase? Oh my god I don't think this is gonna happen. It's ironic isn't it that a person that orchestrated a big prank has no sense of
Starting point is 00:58:20 humour at all. Somebody's gonna call the police on us. I don't care. Who cares? We're just visiting a friend. Yeah. They're going to ask for ID and shit like that. Who gives a shit? I think we have to go. I think so too. Should we just do one lap around the block
Starting point is 00:58:36 and then see if it's there and then we'll go? Come on, let's go. It's 25 minutes to my life. I'll never get back. Yeah, let's go. It's 25 minutes to my life, I'll never get back. Yeah, let's go. Let's just do a loop and then... Watch the house. If you'll be able to see the back of the house,
Starting point is 00:59:03 the top right will be hers. The lights are on. Helen, drive. She was watching. Fuck. Is it gone? It's gone. She was literally watching. Oh my god.
Starting point is 00:59:23 Oh my god. Was she watching us that whole time? She was watching us for 25 minutes. Oh my the second. It's gone, the suitcase is gone. Was she watching us? She was watching the car through the peephole and then as soon as the car drove off she went and got the bag. I'm speechless. There's absolutely no way that that was a coincidence. She was 100% watching. She was so quick, we were literally 30 seconds. That was a 30 second time window. Why is she so cagey?
Starting point is 00:59:58 What is wrong with her? I don't know how I feel about that. I feel weird about that. I don't like that at all. Although how would you feel if you were like, in your early 70s, you've got a car with the lights off with three people faintly illuminated by their phones watching your front door? Why?
Starting point is 01:00:16 I have to say. Why is the right question. Why? She came out. She ran out and like, it was 30 seconds. And it was just suddenly gone, not there anymore. Just seeing the light on. And the case gone.
Starting point is 01:00:33 And the case gone. Not all right. You're right Lauren. You've suddenly become emotional. You never show your emotions until today. I'm just I know disturbed by her behavior it's left me feeling pretty uneasy that because I feel watched now she's had the last laugh that's basically what happened
Starting point is 01:00:55 yes yes she's fucking right now so we're here I'm not laughing you are she's had that she's absolutely got us. She's had us. She played us. She played us like a bloody fiddle. Is there any way that we can have the last laugh? Is it too late? It's not too late, we've got a podcast coming out. Ultimately, we hit the last laugh
Starting point is 01:01:16 because we have a podcast. Right, so I said, did you message Annika? Did she respond at all? And Christina said, yes. She just put a heart emoji on my message. Sometimes it's the little signs, the nuances that can mean the difference between success and failure when solving crimes.
Starting point is 01:01:41 And most of the time, it simply comes down to paying attention. It could be the way a suspect looked at you for that split second, or the smallest slip of the tongue, a slightly defensive response. All of these details, if noticed or unnoticed, can make or break a case. We went back to the screening interview that we did with Annika, which was actually the first interview we ever did. And looking back, the clues were all there,
Starting point is 01:02:14 hiding in plain sight. Somebody is pulling her leg. Maybe somebody heard about the first gag and thought that, oh, maybe we should pull her leg too. It looked as somebody had planned to stay the night or something like that. I think. I think I would have been a bit scared if that arrived on my doorstep. You know, not her. She's not the kind that gets scared.
Starting point is 01:02:49 I know one of her neighbours too. Which neighbour? She is called Vania. So you're friends with Vania? Yes, yes. We have had, we read books and we had a book club. A book club. A little book club, yes.
Starting point is 01:03:07 We had, at the time, yes. So the lesson is, let's pay attention to the quiet ones. The suspects who take a back seat. The ones who find comfort in silence. The ones who are not supposed to be suspects because they are our boyfriends or our sons or our friends. Because if there is one thing we've learnt on this journey, our friends are capable of much more than we realise. You never know the true story about your friends.
Starting point is 01:03:38 Our friendships might not be what they seem, and even the most trustworthy of people are capable of hiding the deepest and darkest of secrets. Looking at the details, here's one for you dear listeners. A creature already told us who the mastermind was in episode 9. All you had to do was pay attention. And you went to Gotland recently, did you? Gotland? Now that was, Christina was at Gotland with another girlfriend. Oh okay. Was that Annika? No, I don't remember, I don't know this girlfriend. Yeah, cool.
Starting point is 01:04:21 The cockerel and Vanja's garden knew all along. I'm so happy that you solved it and impressed that you did it because it's in my mind for all these years. I haven't been thinking about it all the time, but it's been there. Sometimes someone talks to me about it. Yeah, that suitcase. Did you ever get to know who it was? No. Oh, that's strange Did you ever get to know who it was? No. Oh, that's strange. That's strange. So, I'm really happy.
Starting point is 01:04:50 Now what will you say when someone asks you? It's solved by a very professional trio. Now I declare that the case is officially closed.
