Starting point is 00:00:00 Previously on The Case of the Tiny Suitcase. Do you know any military style comics? I know Knarsen. Did you ever read that one? I read it quite a bit at my cousin's place. I know they had a lot of Knarsen. Were they the kids they wanted to read Knarsen or was it from the parents' old copies?
Starting point is 00:00:19 I would guess it was more from their dad's class, actually. He did not disclose his love for Knarsson. Where did you live at the time in 2009 to 2011? Where were you? We lived in Houston, Texas. We certainly didn't live here. We didn't live in Sweden at the time.
Starting point is 00:00:38 You see my diary? Oh, wow. And then it says in my notification, P plus E. And that must be my brother Per and his daughter Erika. So he was there. So I saw the mail Per was writing to you and he said he wasn't living here. Did you tell him you were going to give us this copy of your diary? Nope.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Four days left in Sweden. A finite amount of time to crack this case time is ticking we're exhausted after the midsummer party karen's in a post flirtation slump helen is having sandwich cake withdrawals and i'm just tired from being really good at my job sandwich cake withdrawals, and I'm just tired from being really good at my job. And what's worse, today we have to say goodbye to Professor Mike Berry, our forensic father. We're losing our on-the-ground expert before having solved the crime. Mike, can you give us your highs and your lows of the trip? What's been the best bits, and what do you think has been the worst bits? The worst bit, without a doubt,
Starting point is 00:01:47 was that bloody awful beef burger thing you gave me the other night. Yes. Any question. Yes. I had so many laughs, a lot more laughs than I normally would have on the case. So that's been the good thing. Yeah, it's been fun.
Starting point is 00:01:59 I hear you have a permanent invitation to actually come back to Christina's next summer. Yeah. She's really serious about that. Yeah, I know. And you know what? I'm like holidaying with Mike to Christina's next summer. Yeah. She's really serious about that. Yeah. Imagine I'm like holidaying with Mike and Christina's girls. You arrived in Sweden full of hope and you left with four friends. I'm terrified by the thought of what you're actually going to put out. Same. And my career is finished,
Starting point is 00:02:24 I might as well just put up the signed we've caught you with that sweet spot of sort of like heading to retirement and nobody will work with you anyway after this yeah yeah but you like you've got yeah you've had like a happy successful career we're still at the beginnings of our career so it's worse for us luckily for us mike berry had some parting wisdom oh Oh, by the way, the one of the other questions I need to ask you is when we find blogs or Doris or whoever it is that's done this, what's the intentions? For them to go to prison. Prison. Court case, prison, just the whole shebang, death row, whatever it takes.
Starting point is 00:03:05 bang death row whatever it takes but it is a very good question because what is actually going to happen when we get a yes okay i did it from someone in swedish or english we actually need to work out what yes i did it is in swedish in case someone confesses and we don't even realize that it's happening what do you suggest it comes down to motive again. If it's just purely joke, then they own up. If it's more threatening behaviour, then I think we need to look at that person a bit more to see whether they pose a risk in the future. The worrying thing is they wait 10 years, they could wait another 10 years and do it again.
Starting point is 00:03:43 And then you've got to look at what's the consequences of them doing it again is there a point there where we would actually report this to the police because if so i'm a bit worried about our strategies no you you're under no obligation because the argument is has a crime taking place maybe we make them wear the items from the suitcase and the tiny suit for a week and they have to parade around in their own humiliation or something like that just something psychological you know to just make them regret what they did oh that is nasty yeah getting real insight into my uh moral makeup yes we're quite keen in this country of actually getting the offender to meet the victim and to apologise. So we could have the perpetrator coming along to Christine and apologising and her explaining the impact on her
Starting point is 00:04:31 and him to explain him or her actions and things like that. That might be a nice way of dealing with it. Yeah, I like that. That's classic. And I feel like we should do that on the lake. So we'll send them out on a boat with a microphone, ask them to do it all in English, obviously, just like kind of create a fun setting for it or maybe we could go back to the slaughterhouse right but you're not allowed to sabotage the boat no no you can't you can't put
Starting point is 00:04:56 her in a life jacket and the the offender without a life jacket and then you sabotage the boat and then he drowns or she drowns i don't think that's quite acceptable we're definitely not aiming to murder someone at the end of this season you've just talked about death sentence about five minutes ago you know that's true that's right we wouldn't be personally doing the death sentence we would have to yeah organize someone else to do you do you know any hitmen uh it's funny you mention that yes um they would prefer to use a gun rather than uh sinking a boat sinking a boat guns much better up behind the neck head bang dead and gone whoa okay cool well you can put us in touch with that person if we solve the crime if it's a sinister reason that they left the items then let's consider just getting rid of them otherwise we'll make them wear the
Starting point is 00:05:48 Hawaiian shirt for a week yeah I like the idea of that every day for a year and they've just seen us a photo of them wearing it every day brilliant well we sorted out the punishment thanks Mike for guiding us through that process this is episode seven of The Case of the Tiny Suitcase. Oh, interesting. There's a photo album. We're in the hotel doing research, and we're trying to find evidence of Pear being in Texas
Starting point is 00:06:17 around the time that the first crime was committed, because that is what he has said to us numerous times. Oh, oh, oh, oh, okay. I've come across some images. Look. This is just before the crime was committed. Where are they? In Black Lake. So they were here? He was here. So Pear's lying.
Starting point is 00:06:40 Pear's lying? Pear's lying. So it says on his own Facebook page. Yeah, it's on the 6th of December, the day before the crime. Wow. Let's translate what that means. The day before the crime. The day before the crime.
Starting point is 00:06:53 That's a big thing, right? That's huge. They're just blatantly lying to us. Okay, here we go. What? What does this mean? Okay, so on the 6th of December, what he posted was, I am in the cottage in the town near to Black Lake with Erica over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:07:12 Hasty and funny plan between meetings feels nice. What? What does that mean? Hasty and funny. We need to speak to Erica. Cousin Pear's daughter, Erica. On December 7th, 2009. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:07:29 What were you doing that day? Wow. I guess I was probably at home in Halmstad or outside Halmstad where I lived at the moment. Incorrect. Incorrect? Yes. Incorrect. Incorrect?
Starting point is 00:07:42 Yes. There is a small chance slash a very big chance that you were in Black Lake with your father. We did that a few times, but it feels weird that he would be in the beginning of December. Because he basically said with 100% certainty that he was definitely in Texas at the time. said with 100 certainty that he was definitely in texas at the time and we found two pieces of evidence um that placed him at the crime scene and in that same evidence you're also placed around the crime scene how do you explain yourself no i don't have any explanation do you have a digital diary that you could look back and see what you were doing on that day and if you were doing anything criminal? No, like it would be Facebook. No, I'm looking on Facebook.
Starting point is 00:08:35 I don't know if I can go that far back on my... Oh, no. Actually, yes, I have a picture of Klaus and Leanna's cats from December the 7th, which means I would have been in black light that day. Right, so what is our strategy for Pears interrogation? Let's just be really cocky. Great strategy. Is that it?
Starting point is 00:08:55 Yeah, that's it. And that's different to your regular strategy. How's that? No, we go in and we go... How's it going to work? Well, I'll fucking tell you. Why don't you let me have a chance to explain myself? Jesus Christ. She didn't you let me have a chance to explain myself? Jesus Christ.
Starting point is 00:09:06 She didn't even have any coffee this morning. Okay, why don't you listen to what I've got to say for once? Yeah. We walk in there and we say, we've got you. We've cracked the case. Do you want us to explain to you how we've cracked it? Or do you want to just own up now? I like this.
Starting point is 00:09:21 See? I like this. But I think we should present him one piece of evidence at a time and say like, we've cracked the case, look at this, this diary, no, no, this diary entry proves that you were in town. And then
Starting point is 00:09:35 he'll go, oh no it doesn't, that could be a lie. And then we say, your Facebook page shows us you were in town, you little shit. Now we've got you. Why were you lying to us? Yeah, why did you lie to us? Shall I say there's new evidence we found security footage placing you at the scene of the crime? No, let's not do that. Okay, cool. That's easy. We've got it. We've cracked the case. I'm annoyed because I thought I'd ruled him out. I said you look like a really innocent guy, Per,
Starting point is 00:10:02 and he was like, yeah. Flirtation flashback. I just, my gut feeling out. I said, you look like a really innocent guy, Pear. And he was like, yeah. Flirtation, fleshback. Pear, I just, my gut feeling is that I can trust you. Whoa. My gut feeling. I'm not saying you're ruled out. You're still a suspect. No, but that's good. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because he thinks that we trust him. My notes for Pear's interrogation are five bullet points.
Starting point is 00:10:23 One is cocky entry. Turn the car off. Shit, yeah, sorry. Thanks for that. He's watching us approach him and we're watching him watch us. I don't think he knows what he's in for. Good afternoon, Per. Good afternoon, Per. Can we please have a word with you? Oh, we're going to take our shoes off.
Starting point is 00:10:40 It doesn't really go with our bad cop. We had a plan for entering your house really aggressively, but... It didn't include taking our shoes off. Yeah, we didn't think about the shoe thing. Pear, get inside. Oh, nice place. I wish you'd do that.
Starting point is 00:10:53 No, don't do that. Second is slap down diary and ask him to read it out. Well, Pear... Open that diary, please. 7th of December. December 7th. Seven. Just take a deep breath.
Starting point is 00:11:33 Bo, Stina, P plus E. Now who could that be? Probably me and Eureka. It looks suspicious. It does. It looks incredibly suspicious. Do you know how many times you told us you were for sure, with 100% certainty, in Texas? It's still P plus E. Can it be anybody other than P? P plus E.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Eureka, she lived in Halmstad by that time. So could it be that this is a false entry and that you still are pretty accurate about the fact that you were in Texas? And this is either wrong or P plus E stands for something else. Let me see. That was a weak one. I mean, what can I say? Wow. Yeah, say? Wow.
Starting point is 00:12:26 Yeah, wow. Wow. Three is confront him with Facebook posts from 2009. We'd like to draw your attention to exhibit A. Isn't that B? This is A. Exhibit B. B. Per, is that your name? Is that you? Is that your profile picture?
Starting point is 00:12:46 Yeah. Could you read out the date for me and read out what this is, please? Oh, okay, yeah. All right, yeah. All right what? I mean, it was like, I think when I saw this, I was in Germany in between meetings,
Starting point is 00:13:06 spent the weekend here. Oh, it was like, I think when I saw this, I was in Germany in between meetings, spent the weekend here. Oh, it's a bit worrying. Because this places you at the scene of the crime on the date that the crime happened. And your alibi, which was a state of America, Texas was your alibi, no longer is a valid alibi. No. Do you usually squeak in a high-pitched voice? I think it's a chair moving.
Starting point is 00:13:30 Four is why would you lie to us? Why did you lie to us? I didn't. I didn't collect evidence. I didn't look back in my story. I looked for my diaries, but I didn't keep anything from those years. And five is just threaten. Threaten, perfect. If you put your fingers in that toaster and we asked you the same questions
Starting point is 00:13:52 Threatening. Plug it in. If it was plugged in and we put it down on setting four, which is like a warm roast and we were about to push the old lever, what would you then say? I would probably confess to anything, but... We'll take it. Honestly, at this stage, we'll take it.
Starting point is 00:14:16 We're open to a false confession. Just own up to one of them at least. No, sorry, guys. Barking up the wrong tree. I think now's the time to cough up that you did it no no just come up here no so why would erica have said that you did it erica yeah did she why would she said that she was pretty certain that you put the suit there wow i don't know that's crazy that's crazy but that's your own flesh and blood your daughter the product of you and she is she said she was like 98 certain okay so she's just lying your daughter is lying to us about you.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Yes. If Ruben did it... Christina's Uncle Ruben. And if Klaas knew that Ruben did it, do you think Klaas would keep a secret? For Ruben? For Ruben. To defend his dad. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:18 So you think it's feasible that the parable could be protecting Ruben? Mm-hmm. Keeping the secret. And maybe he found these things, that the pair of them could be protecting Ruben. Keeping the secret. And maybe he found these things, figured, for one reason or the other, that they belonged to Christina. If the suit fits, wear it.
Starting point is 00:15:41 It's funny, because we came here today really thinking that you were absolutely guilty. Maybe class was not. And now I'm swinging back to class again. Fuck. We really need to speak with him. It always comes back to class. And suddenly we're reminded about what Per said to us yesterday about his brother class. Something he could do.
Starting point is 00:16:02 It's elaborate enough to be like class. What you see is very plausible. Thank you. But how are we going to get him to confess? We should just drive down there. Ambush him. Just ambush him. We're parked up around the corner from class's house, discussing our plan of action for the ambush. Right, Class. And our main objective is to get Class to agree to going through the lie detector test. To get him strapped up. And the only way I feel that we're going to get him to say yes is if he feels lots of other people have undergone the same treatment, so he doesn't feel singled out.
Starting point is 00:16:41 Yeah. So we find us... Get to the point. So I think... Treatment? You make it sound like a lobotomy. Well, it is a bit. OK, so we have a bit of a problem.
Starting point is 00:16:51 I had a relatively important task that I was unable to fulfil. In order to successfully execute the lie detector test, we need a PC. Last season, I forced Yuuel to install Windows on his Mac so that we could successfully run the lie detector test from his laptop. That caused a couple of problems. It crashed his computer and placed a couple of viruses on it. But the main issue was that there were scheduling conflicts. When we needed to strap somebody up, Ewell was not able to work. And when he had to work, we were unable to strap people up.
Starting point is 00:17:34 Usually that issue was mitigated by me giving him plenty of warning when we needed his computer. Today was not one of those days. So yeah.'t have the laptop yeah that's the issues you think we can get the laptop to do it properly right now no so i think the only i just think we have to pretend that um pretend we're strapping him up yeah so we've got the equipment we just don't have the laptop to hook it into so what if he asks can i have a look and see the thing but how's he gonna there's gonna be no beeping there's gonna going to be no... Nothing. He won't have a clue. The galvanisation wraps are just going to not plug into anything. So you put it in the laptop,
Starting point is 00:18:09 but you pretend that you've got the software, even though we don't have the software. Oh, and what? Are we going to make some beeps? No, we're not going to make... He doesn't know how it works. What's your control question? You know how to do this.
Starting point is 00:18:18 Are you sexually into horses? So, and then we just keep it really short, and then we... So I'm fully becoming the polygraph this time 100 polygraph to be honest you could override the results of it anyway exactly this is probably now it's 100 overridden by me you are the polygraph i've become the polygraph sounds scientific i mean you've been intertwined heavily with this piece of machinery so it's not a massive leap is it yeah perfect oh god So can you strap him up? Yeah, I can strap him up.
Starting point is 00:18:46 We can do it together. I'm actually genuinely nervous about faking it with Clasp. He's quite switched on, and I think he'll just be wondering what's going on. He'll be checking my screen. Remember why we're doing the polygraph. We're doing it just because there's no other way around. He's such a trickster.
Starting point is 00:19:01 If he knows there's a machine that will tell the truth or a lie just the thought of that might make him confess the strategy is we talk him through the agenda we say class we're going to ask you some some questions first yeah um then we're going to do a lie detector test if you're willing to do that so he knows right from the start that we've got a piece of equipment in our bag um a few quick questions plus polygraph plus DNA swab. I might not say the DNA swab until the very end. Fair enough, yep.
Starting point is 00:19:34 That might put them off. I mean the whole thing's going to put them off, but yeah, let's give it a go. We're here. Shit. Why is it I nervous? Helen, why is this loose? That's not anything important. It's a DNA kit.
Starting point is 00:19:51 I opened it, but I didn't close it. Why? I didn't put anything in it. You're honest. No, I opened it and I went to use it, then I lost it. Then I got a second one and used it, and that's the one that's in the WhatsApp bag. How are you? Hey, class.
Starting point is 00:20:03 It's just a casual chat between a few friends. An old friend, which is me, and some new friends, which is Helen and Karen. I'll just run you through the agenda of this friendly chat. There's actually only two points to the agenda. The first is the friendly chat. And then the second one
Starting point is 00:20:21 is a lie detector test. Oops. If you're happy to undergo a lie detector. I don't know if I'm happy, but I will. We're doing everyone. Yeah. Okay, great. So on to the friendly chat.
Starting point is 00:20:35 How are you? I'm fine, thanks. What was your first impression of the fact that some high-end detectives were coming to investigate this crime i think i thought that it's unsolvable unsolvable it might be unsolvable pellet sorry there's been a bit of bickering she's not good in the heat i think it's a matter of salary yeah of course it is well she's got to work up to her salary. We have her. She is cuckoo assistant. Cuckoo? Yeah. Yes she is bloody cuckoo. Is that what you mean? I have Clemens, Ronald and Helen. Helen. You can have her. Was I in the same category as these cats? Yes. Yes. Yeah. Right okay.
Starting point is 00:21:22 We're just trying to get an understanding of where the suit and where the suitcase came from we've got two options one of them is maybe could have been that they were Ruben's items he would have had a lot of vintage stuff like that it sounds like he had a lot of things not junk but he he collected items maybe not by choice but he just held on to stuff because we've got a few witnesses claiming that they would remember going up the stairs in your house and seeing all of his things up there. Erica, for example, said that. So do you think that that could have,
Starting point is 00:21:54 do you think the suitcase and the suit could have come from Ruben's things? Christina's Uncle Ruben. But also it's possible that it came from this house because there were old suitcases from my mother's parents and also some from my father's parents. Did you enjoy the party on Saturday? Yeah, I think it was a little bit strange because sometimes nothing happened and sometimes it was very intense.
Starting point is 00:22:29 Yeah, yeah. As you know, we had a man who was posing as Karen's uncle who later turned out to be a clinical forensic psychologist. We asked him to submit a report. Actually, he proactively did that. Let's not say we didn't ask for that.
Starting point is 00:22:49 We just thought he'd just be there and then go. He spontaneously wrote a report of all of the people he came across that day. And he provided a suspicion rating out of 10. Do you know what score he gave you out of 10. Do you know what score he gave you out of 10? I can think he gave quite high. What number did Klaus get?
Starting point is 00:23:14 7 out of 10. And what do you think Klaus' motive could have been? Trying to be clever. Which is why I thought when he said, I'm too clever, that kind of rang a bell in my head about motives. He was trying to pull one over everybody else
Starting point is 00:23:31 and then sitting there smugly knowing what the score is. Knowing he's cleverer than everybody. I just got... My bells were ringing and I just felt he was a very over-controlled character, which then gets explosive when he's pushed too far. What does an over-controlled character which then gets explosive when he's pushed too far. What does an over-controlled character mean? It means that he keeps his emotions very much dampened down, doesn't express anger... AND IT'S ONLY CLONE!
Starting point is 00:23:54 Fuck, that scared me. Oh shit! That did stink. Oh my god! That scared me. Never do that again, Mike. I usually bang on the table when I'm doing testing for post-traumatic stress disorder. I'm never really on top of the table.
Starting point is 00:24:07 So we've all got PTSD. Anyway, so... We're feeding into his absolute dream right now of like... Of him being clever. Shit. What do you guess? What's your guess? As a number? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:26 From the people there? I could be one of the most suspicious, I guess. I don't know. Why do you think you could be one of the most suspicious? Living close to Christina. Leaving clues to Kristina. You can see directly to Kristina's house in winter, is that right? Yeah, from inside I can now see if the car is home. You had a look and you're like, oh Krist Christina's out, so I can just go and take this little tiny suit and I can just drop it on her veranda and then she won't know it's me.
Starting point is 00:25:10 Yeah, I have every possibility to do that. You don't have to see, you can go and check first. Often you knew, yeah, if she was working in different places. And then you knew she's away during working hours. He's obviously good at reading people. It's his job. He gave you a seven out of ten. Can you guess why he might have given you a seven? It must be from my acting at the party. I was joking some, going to you and yelling. When you scream?
Starting point is 00:25:49 Yeah. And that people can think that I'm doing things to avoid suspicious thinking. Yeah. Like overly dramatic to hide things. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Why were you screaming? It's fun.
Starting point is 00:26:10 It is fun. Afterwards I should say we should sound like kissing or something. What? I don't remember this. Instead of screaming. Oh, like you and Karen were hooking up in the booth, in the forensic booth. It was quite a romantic place, to be honest. I think if there's anywhere that could be a romantic moment, it would be in the slaughterhouse in the forensic corner.
Starting point is 00:26:36 We took your fingerprints at the party. We've also been doing some DNA testing on the suit in the suitcase. We've got a forensic scientist in the UK who is helping us to do that because we don't actually know how to do that. But she's told us what to do and we're now doing it. There was something that we found that we're currently processing in the lab and that is a small grey hair that we found inside the suitcase that was left on Christina's porch and that hair
Starting point is 00:27:07 looks very much like it could belong to you. Could you explain how your hair could have got into the suitcase? No, I don't know. I don't know. I have never had that suitcase from what I knew. As I said, maybe the suitcase came from this house. I don't know. When you're packing a suitcase, you're kind of like leaning over it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, get the goggles in, get the canars and book in.
Starting point is 00:27:35 I scratch my head because I want to think of what else fit in it. What should I put in it? Oh, scratchy scratch. Hair falls down, lands into the suitcase. Yeah, that's, of course. Scratchy scratch. Here it falls down, lands into the suitcase. Yeah, that's... Scratchy scratch. Okay, class. Is there anything you're not telling us? There's a lot I'm not telling you, but in this story, no.
Starting point is 00:27:54 Would you prefer to do the lie detector first or the DNA sampling first? DNA? Mouth swab. Are you doing DNA? That must be expensive. Not when you've got friends in the forensic. She said it was £200 a pop. Yeah, we're not paying that. She's going to have to give us a...
Starting point is 00:28:11 Just see if you can run it inside your mouth. That's finally in my mouth. Pull the bread out. Yeah. Why do we find this funny? Because it's ridiculous. Is it ridiculous? Yeah, it's ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:28:23 Lovely. Nice DNA you've got there. Helen whips out the lie detector test. She was under strict instructions not to wave it around. I won't show it like Helen was showing. It doesn't look very professional. Let's not wave it around. Helen. Helen!
Starting point is 00:28:41 Hide that box, please, Helen. Why? Well, it doesn't exactly scream professionalism, does it? Up close. Further up, further up. A little bit higher. Nice and tight. Something's not on right.
Starting point is 00:29:03 Is that comfortable? So, class, welcome to your lie detection test. How are you feeling? It's funny. And just breathe. Just take in the surroundings and breathe. Are you a male? Yes, I am.
Starting point is 00:29:24 Just simple yes or no is perfect. Thank you. Have you ever been angry? Yes. Have you ever been to sleep? Yes. These are terrible questions. Did you leave the suit on Christina's veranda?
Starting point is 00:29:42 No. Bad body language detected. Why are you laughing? Did you leave the suitcase on Christina's veranda? No. Bad body language detected.
Starting point is 00:29:57 Control before flying. You know you have nothing. Just calm. It's very, this is just a casual chat among friends. New friends and old friends. Just calm. It's very, this is just a casual chat among friends, new friends and old friends. Remember that. Have you ever owned Canarsen comic books? Yes.
Starting point is 00:30:14 Do you know who left the suit and or the suitcase on Christina's veranda? No. Bad body language detected. Have you ever lied to us? No. Bad body language detected. Have you ever lied to us? No. Bad body language detected. The exam has detected irregularities. You said no, that was a lie.
Starting point is 00:30:36 There was a game that Detective Lauren played at the end where everybody had to point to who they thought might be guilty. You didn't point to anybody. You said no. That was also a lie. We've also been doing some DNA testing on the suit and the suitcase. You said no. That was a lie. Is there anything you're not telling us? There's a lot I'm not telling you.
Starting point is 00:31:14 I think that you did it. Yeah. I think she did it. Well, I don't think you did it. The machine thinks you did it. Oh, okay. That was a lie, was it? I felt that my body was reacting when...
Starting point is 00:31:24 You lied to us, okay. Could there be something that you know in your subconscious that you don't think you know? Is there something in the back of your mind? We might need to hypnotize you and see if it comes... I mean, you just basically lied to him that he did a test. I feel really bad about that.
Starting point is 00:31:44 I feel bad. You put in way more lies than I thought you were going to. I was like, what about when it was like you have an undetected, like, undetermined answer? I forgot what the word was. When he first put it on, I couldn't stop laughing uncontrollably. And then he was looking at me like, why are you laughing? And I was like, I don't know, but I couldn't stop. I couldn't think of the word undetermined. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:32:02 And I was freaking out. It was really hot. Just being in town. No, I was getting weird weird vibes but I think it could have been the heat because it was about 3,000 degrees and the sweltering sun. Everyone was a little bit you know beyond testy. Yeah. Can we get any lower that's the question. I think a fake polygraph is a low point. Pretty pretty low. How low can we go? Hello, Lena, we're just looking through your house. We've got a warrant. We've got a search warrant. We're climbing up the stairs to Class's attic,
Starting point is 00:32:34 the place where many witnesses have said that they've seen old things, lots and lots of old vintage items. We have had more suitcases, but... What's that? Now we don't have so many suitcases. And while we are reviewing this potential crime scene listeners, I want you to remember this one thing that Klaas just said to us. We'd love
Starting point is 00:32:58 to come and have a look at where you keep them. Is that possible? Yeah, we can go up and see. My savings on comics is mostly Asterix and Lucky Luke. This is gorgeous. Oh, wow. Look at the stake of Knosson. No, it's not only Knosson. It's just a coincidence that it's Knosson. On top. It's time to corner Klaas' wife, Lena, and ask the question
Starting point is 00:33:31 that we've been wanting to know the answer to. Over to Klaas' wife, Lena. But there was one question we wanted to ask you, if that's okay? Yes, that's okay. During the game that we played at Midsummer, when we all stood in a circle and I asked you to all point at who you think did it, you pointed upstairs to the sky. Who were you pointing at? No, I don't know. I just think it was none of these people. And I really don't know. I think it's someone else.
Starting point is 00:34:07 Could it have been that you were pointing to heaven? I pointed to heaven, but I don't think it's God or something. Could it have been somebody that passed away and gone to heaven? Oh, I never thought of that. Oh. All right, well, that's that then.
Starting point is 00:34:27 Another lead. Another lead. Shut down. Gone. And we're back to where we started, which is nothing. So you both have the same point of view, that you don't believe anyone in that circle could have done it? No, they would have said something sometime. I can't imagine any one of those people doing this
Starting point is 00:34:48 and keep quiet for so many years. I don't think it's possible. But what if it is possible? You've been placed on hold. Please wait. Hi, Vanya. We're sitting at the pub, drowning our sorrows, after yet another day of no real progression on this case, when out of nowhere, we get a text.
Starting point is 00:35:11 The message is from best friend Vanya, and it reads three words. Three words that will change the course of this investigation. I have information. We call Vanya immediately. Hey, you're speaking to the assistant to the detective Karen Whitehouse here, how are you? And the detective, Lauren Kilbeth. Yeah. We're actually at a restaurant slash bar, that's why it's quite loud. The sound quality on this call is not great, so I will repeat back to you what is said. You have information for us apparently.
Starting point is 00:35:51 I think it's difficult to talk about on the telephone. I've been struggling with this for many days. I haven't been sleeping for four nights. I have been struggling with this for many days. I haven't been sleeping for four nights. Have you cracked the case, Vanya? No, I can't say that. I have information which is important for you. Why were you hiding this from us? Trust it to you, Vanya.
Starting point is 00:36:22 I don't know. I don't know. See, it was a secret. It was a secret. Is it information that just occurred to you tonight? No. Is it new information? No. I had it all the time.
Starting point is 00:36:36 Oh! Coming up next... When you look at it, does it look like a pube? Something very strange is going on. Genuinely strange. I on, genuinely strange. I want to be honest and I will not lie anymore. I'm not sure that descending onto a stranger's house and asking for their fingerprints in their own home is really the right... Or a DNA swab if you feel that's a bit more comfortable.
Starting point is 00:36:59 You can't tell what will take somebody in a different direction when they're ashamed or they held back for years. We need to go about this very carefully.
