Starting point is 00:00:00 In this sort of new phase that we're going through where we're appreciating that feedback is a gift, all in the spirit of improvement, we reflected that you had quite a lot to say about our performance at the undercover party. Yeah but directly this became like a tit for tit. I don't think it's tit for tat. Sorry what are we doing? pear what is quite pear is quite an important suspect um that we interrogated i thought you were about to talk about peers like delicious peers no no fruit just stop trying to get out of this feedback when when we got class's diary how far along the investigation do you think we got that at the start most true detectives would, like it's a pretty key thing to work out where someone was at any particular time, and Facebook is a classic point start. And so I just don't know why you took so long. And actually it
Starting point is 00:00:58 was me that actually checked Facebook. So as lead detective, I just feel like you really dropped the ball there. I'm saying you're a shoddy detective because most real detectives would have checked Pear's Facebook page immediately after getting classes, Daria, which we didn't do. So what's the point of this, Karen? Whoa, okay, Karen, I think you're forgetting one thing. Yes, this is an investigation, but it is also a podcast where we need to entertain listeners. If I had already ruled out power before we got to Sweden, what the hell would we have put in episode seven? I don't think that's the right way to approach a case.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Okay, so you want me to approach a case like a real detective, just quietly do things and not record anything and just quickly rule people out? I think it should probably be case first, podcast second. Are we actually putting priority that the case is higher than the podcast? I think we should probably agree that hierarchy don't you i'd have to say i disagree i'm actually a bit just pissed off that you were
Starting point is 00:01:50 like picking at me you do seem like you're lashing out i'm lashing out because i it's always me that actually does the grunt work and actually gets somewhere and i was the one like scrolling through facebook and then i was like and actually if like lead detective was going to be a lead detective you would be like right you know let's, let's really use my team's resources. Let's get Karen on that. I'll give her a bit of directions. But you never did that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Yeah. No, I understand. I understand. You're lacking, you're lacking managerial support. And I need to, I need to step up and delegate effectively. And at the correct point in the investigation. I will take that on as feedback. OK, good. Thanks. That's everything. Is that it?
Starting point is 00:02:30 I thought I was going to get in trouble for not bringing Yol's laptop. I'm going to go make myself a cup of coffee. Are we done here? We are dealing with a shocking turn of events in this case. Christina's best friend Vanya has delivered three very important words to us. Three words that will change the course of this investigation. I
Starting point is 00:02:53 have information. I've been struggling with this for many days. I haven't been sleeping for four nights. Something very strange is going on. Genuinely strange. It was a secret.
Starting point is 00:03:08 It was a secret. Why has she been lying to Christina for so long? If she confesses, how are you going to feel? My best friend, Vanya. So she's the one that did all the naughty things to you then? No. We are very kind. We are supporting each other. There's a lot of trust. I just think if you had done it, you would have kind to each other. We are supporting each other.
Starting point is 00:03:26 There's a lot of trust. I just think if you had done it, you would have told Christina by now. You would have said, surprise. You know, I am the person, I buy a present for my daughters and they should wait one month. I can't stop it. I have to tell them before. Who do you think put the suitcase and the suit on Christina's porch? If I should try to guess one person, is that what you mean? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:54 I've tried many times and I can't find it out. I don't think it is anyone here. Do you mind having a look at the photos? I think I have seen the two the suitcase i don't know if i've seen before she's dragged us all the way over to black lake because she couldn't explain over the phone it was too complicated of what the information she's been sitting on and she's confessed that she's been holding information previously
Starting point is 00:04:25 so yesterday last night was when we found this out and um we were drunk so that wasn't ideal but that's fine we're not drunk anymore and prior to yesterday so the night before my mum and christina because my mum is now in black Lake visiting Christina and me, kind of. And they actually went over to Vanya's house for a night of barbecue and cigars. And I actually asked my mum while she was there to do a bit of digging because I thought, you know, she might have a different strategy. She's a codebreaker from season one, so she might be able to crack something. She forgot. season one so she might be able to crack something um she forgot but um what they did say was Vanya
Starting point is 00:05:08 at one point said to her do you really think I know something and could have kept this from you and Christina said no and that's what's maybe eating her up is if she does know something it's I think she's feeling guilt um andorse. Vanya is Christina's absolute best friend yet something has been kept from Christina. Okay so that's Vanya's house up there I think. Top of the lift? Yeah. What the hell are we gonna find out? So you've got to be just really nice and sweet. Give her time to set up, maybe feel free to make us a coffee. Is this? Yeah keep going. Maybe feel free to make us a coffee. Is this? Yeah, keep going. There she is. Is she looking happy or sad?
Starting point is 00:05:47 Does she look guilty? Oh, she's got a really serious look on her face. Yeah. Good morning. Good morning, Vanya. Come, come, come, come, come. Just pati pati pa me. I don't know. I saw my mum get chased by one of the chickens
Starting point is 00:06:07 when I dropped her at your house the other night. Vanya guides us through her chicken collection towards her home. She looks visibly stressed. You can tell she is not looking forward to this conversation. She leads us inside and offers us seats at her kitchen table. We are not remotely prepared for what's about to happen. So, I think we're ready. We're ready. You have some information? Yes I have and in one way I've been involved and I have been lying to you and I will not lie anymore
Starting point is 00:06:55 but I'm not going to tell everything. But I hadn't made the suitcase. Someone asked me to deliver it outside Christina's house. You knew she wasn't home that day?
Starting point is 00:07:39 Yes. I know her working times and yes. And the car is not standing there. I did it when she was not at home, of course. Best friend, Vanya. The 1st of April is April Fool's Day. Yes, it is. I haven't been thinking of that before you say it now. So that wasn't part of, like, you had to drop it off on the 1st of April as a... I have no memories about this now.
Starting point is 00:08:05 Why do you confess? Because I want to be honest. Were you involved in the suit a year and a half before? No, no. And do you know who was involved in that? No. And you won't tell us? I don't know anything about the suit.
Starting point is 00:08:23 So it's a different crime. So we're potentially now dealing with multiple perpetrators. We've got an assist who was given the item to deposit and then we've got the conceptor of the idea. Yeah, the mastermind. The mastermind. Who is the mastermind? So you don't remember ever opening the suitcase?
Starting point is 00:08:44 No, I don't think so. At that moment, I didn't know what was in it. But I trust this person. I was not worried that it should be bad things in the suitcase. You know this person well. You trust them? Yeah. I trust.
Starting point is 00:09:03 Was this person at the Midsommar Madness party? I don't tell you. Is there some clue? Because we're so deaf. I have been talking to this person before I left the message to you. So they agreed for you to reveal the information. You are in contact with the mastermind. Yes.
Starting point is 00:09:25 But you don't know if the mastermind has other people working on this. Right. So maybe the mastermind got a different person to do this suit. Yeah, could be. There's multiple people involved, a network of criminals. Did you have gray hair 12 years ago?
Starting point is 00:09:39 Yes. You had a book club, didn't you? Who was in your book club? It was changing a bit. Because I had two men during this period. Two men? Boyfriends? Boyfriends, yes, during this period.
Starting point is 00:09:58 Not at the same time? Not at the same time. There was one man in 2009 and a different one in 2011. And it was me and one of these men in the book circle. So in 11 it was Bosse, Kristina and a girlfriend at her work, Annika, and her boyfriend at that time. Annika's boyfriend? Thomas. How long have you known Christina?
Starting point is 00:10:30 83 or something like that. Since 83, so 39 years. And you went to Gotland recently, did you? Gotland? No, that was Christina was at Gotland with another girlfriend. Oh, okay. Was it Annika? No, I don't remember.
Starting point is 00:10:53 I don't know this girlfriend. Are you busy all the time now? Well, yes. Thanks to you. How would you feel about telling Christina yourself so we don't say anything? I can do that if you want me to do that. I take her aside and I said, I have something to tell you. Guys, we've just cracked a bit of the case. We really need to up our game.
Starting point is 00:11:17 The pressure is on, we've got three days left. We've got three days left to find out who the mastermind is and work out if they delivered the suit as well, or got someone, recruited someone to deliver the suit. It doesn't have to be the same person. It doesn't, does it? No. That's really annoying for us.
Starting point is 00:11:34 You don't get anything more from me now. Cool. These biscuits were very nice. Vanya just confessed that she was the one who left the little suitcase on Christina's veranda. But she was instructed by somebody else to plant it there. So there is a mastermind behind this whole operation. And we have three days left on the ground to try and catch them. It's time to enlist the help of a psychic detective who will lead us on to our next suspect,
Starting point is 00:12:07 a suspect we are hoping is the mastermind. Hello Helen, hello Lauren, hello Karen. My name is Nancy Orlin Webber. I am on the east coast of the United States. I am currently known at least in social media and documentaries as a psychic detective. I was a crime victim and became a crime solver. I have worked with law enforcement for over 41 years, some of it very successful and some of it not. Can you just explain to Lauren and Helen how you reacted when you received the first email from me? I was hysterical laughing. I loved it. It sent me skyrocketing into joy. I love supporting people who bring joy to life. I'm 78. So for me, my journey now, I think is just supporting everybody who can carry on legacies that are fantastic and
Starting point is 00:13:05 I believe what you are all doing matters deeply matters and I was so moved so impressed and so joyful to discover oh here they are I want to know them more and so it didn't matter what you were going to ask me to do. I wanted to be with you. Let's say you help us to solve this case. Detective Lauren, that means you can't really claim that you've solved a case if Nancy cracks it. Yeah, we probably need to work out the roles and responsibilities. Don't we, Nancy? You know, maybe you could be my assistant detective,
Starting point is 00:13:43 but like the psychic, and I could even be your assistant psychic. How about if I am a mentor to you as you are the psychic detective? I don't need credit for any of it. I don't have any mentors at the moment, so I would really like it if you would be my mentor. I would love it. Okay, it's official. If you correct the case, you'll basically tell me
Starting point is 00:14:05 who did it and then I will reveal who did it and everyone will think that I am the clever one. Is this what we're saying? I don't care. Any way you choose to do it is good for me. Lauren can be more right than me. We don't know. It's unlikely, Nancy. I seriously doubt it. We don't know. It's unlikely, Nancy. I seriously doubt it. I don't know. You don't know me well enough.
Starting point is 00:14:28 We know me. That's the issue. I find that my best work is working in the dark. I cannot know very much about anything. I look at photos quickly. And sometimes I'll stop and look at a photo and talk to the photo as if it can tell me things. The suitcase isn't tiny. Nancy is reviewing a document that we created with photos of the evidence, the suspects and of Christina.
Starting point is 00:14:57 We're sharing it with her live on this call because she did not want to see anything beforehand. The person who owned it, I don't think is alive by far. And it was a male. Whoever took it, then handed it to somebody else or somebody else asked for it and gave it to them. Oh, this beautiful woman, friendly, smart, savvy lady. Very talented in many ways and very curious about everything. Okay, why would somebody like to play this on her? Somebody is playing with her, but it might make her uncomfortable.
Starting point is 00:15:42 She's somebody who digs deep into mysteries, I believe, also. It's somebody who knows she loves mysteries. They could be angry at her. They know she frustrates because she loves solving the mysteries. If she can't solve it, she's probably like me on it. You never drop it. So that being said, it could be somebody who wants to agitate her.
Starting point is 00:16:06 The link that felt the strongest is somebody who wanted to frustrate her, knew her well enough. Here's something, Lauren, I'm going to throw out to you to work with me on. Yes. Somebody that's so good, so special, and maybe their relatives and best friends love her. Why would any of them want to do that? I find it quite bizarre that it's been 10 years and no one has come forward. I think they're embarrassed. I think they're very embarrassed to realize that the more disturbed she got over it,
Starting point is 00:16:42 the worse they felt about telling who they are. So thank you. You see, when I work with law enforcement agencies here, we bounce things off of each other. And you just put the thread in the needle. You just gave a very good explanation. We're such a good team, Nancy. I know. So I think there is a person she
Starting point is 00:17:08 knows for a very long time, there could even be a relationship, that started out as a prank and realized she was taking seriously, well who could it be? And got really uncomfortable coming to the fore. And I really think, Lauren, you were right on on that. So congratulations. You're making me feel like a detective. And no one else does. You see, that's really how it works. So Lauren, you are a detective.
Starting point is 00:17:41 You are doing exactly what detectives do. Thank you. At pharmacy, it's true. All right, thank you. So suspects. So now we look at the men. And shame, for me, I think is the key. Because I do think it's somebody close to her.
Starting point is 00:18:01 The more they got questioned, the more they resisted. Suspect two. Uh, no. Suspect three. Doesn't feel right. Suspect number five, in the yellow jacket. The man in the yellow jacket. I believe he would know something.
Starting point is 00:18:21 Is Chell. He does have a secret. There's something about him i don't trust he is the only person out of all the suspects who hasn't actually been questioned by anyone in the history of the this case now lauren i want you to do something also if you don't mind do you have photos of the man yep okay i want you to take a look at the man in the yellow jacket, only here's how I want you to do it please. I want you to just take a nice slow deep breath, close your eyes for a moment and ask to be a messenger from
Starting point is 00:18:55 the light, nothing else. And then I want you to look at him and pretend you're having a conversation with him and whatever whatever pops up, play it. Okay. Nothing happened. My favourite moment, which has been making me chuckle since when she asked you to. There were three very long seconds where you were in a complete like paralysed state of panic which I was loving because it was very entertaining for me
Starting point is 00:19:36 because I knew how much you were squirming. I didn't expect this to be an interactive mentorship. I expected her to just kind of like be my mentor but continue doing what she needed to do and I would do what I needed to do after the call. She thought you thought she would coach you to be a detective not to be a psychic detective. I just didn't think that there would be like interactivity. It's not my specialty it won't ever be. I don't think you should you know go down that that route. I can sniff things and I don't know if it's any one. It may be more than one.
Starting point is 00:20:08 It feels like it's an outsider, not an insider. Although the insider may have been the instigator, it doesn't feel like anybody in that area did it. Nancy believes that the mastermind is from outside Black Lake. And who lives outside Black Lake? Chell does. The yellow-jacketed man. Nancy also believes that this mastermind
Starting point is 00:20:31 worked with someone from inside Black Lake to orchestrate this entire thing. And guess who that is? It's Vanya. Best friend Vanya. Which is incredibly interesting because Vanya actually knows Chell. They used to work together and they're still friends.
Starting point is 00:20:50 And then we also have Lars and his theory about it being Chell who dropped the tiny cow stool on his veranda. I know what you're thinking, listeners. Pretty impressive detective work. And you're not wrong. There's only one thing left to do now. It's time to ambush Chell and get some answers from this yellow jacketed dodgy suspect. So the guy in the yellow jacket
Starting point is 00:21:18 The guy in the yellow jacket is Chell. I think this is an interesting one. But we've got one chance to question him on if he left those items on the doorstep. Do you know why else he's a suspect, Helen? No, tell me. His office at the time when both of these crimes happened was in a shared building with a shop called Returen, which is a secondhand goods shop. And his best friends worked at the shop.
Starting point is 00:21:44 And everyone in the local area says that is the exact shop you would get all of those kind of items from so he had the perfect source for all the random objects that were left on christina's veranda like a 1930s suitcase and stuff like that you know even though this is not a admissible crime it's still a case you never take for granted that even in something like this the people who might get involved may have their own agenda and it may not be nice you must be careful on how you approach you can't tell what will take somebody in a different direction when they're ashamed or they held back the years. When somebody admits something
Starting point is 00:22:27 after many years there's a wonderful lesson for them on how it feels to let go of something they've hidden. The secret's a secret. I don't care what kind of secret it is. Secrets are not privacy and they're not helping. We need to go about this very carefully. It sounds like a strong lead. We're potentially about to solve a crime. Yeah, I mean... I'm feeling it tingling in my balls. The other thing is, I thought you said your balls then. I was like...
Starting point is 00:22:55 I'm feeling it tingling in my balls. Is this something I don't know? Yeah. So he doesn't know he's a suspect even though he's high on the list. Yeah, he doesn't know Christina's been obsessing about this for years. And wants it solved before she dies is chow the mastermind behind these three acts of reverse theft the tiny suit the not so tiny suitcase and the tiny cow stool i know everyone
Starting point is 00:23:19 thinks this is quite funny but i think deep down christina's actually been quite disturbed on some level by like who's been, like, breaking... Do you think she's been disturbed? I think she's had moments. I think it's like with season one, when we were like, ha-ha, funny, like, shit on the floor, but actually there's undertones of, fuck, someone's, like, not coming forward
Starting point is 00:23:34 and someone's, like, messing with me. We're back at the hotel with Lars and Ewell, discussing what our strategy is for ambushing Chell. Lars has told Chell that he's popping over for a casual visit. We agree that the least suspicious way to do this is for Karen and Helen to wait in the car and for me to go in with Lars and Ewell. Wait a minute.
Starting point is 00:23:57 So, us three go in and then... Are you going to say that I'm a detective? Yes. But should I already start questioning him about this? Yeah. Oh no. Just casually, like, I know this is your job. You're a detective.
Starting point is 00:24:13 So seriously, because I spoke to Mike Berry about this and he was a bit worried, I think you should be translator, just because you're really quick with English. Yep. But you cannot fluff what he says. Mike thinks that it's a conflict of interest because he thinks you're gonna tell me the information I want to hear you need to give exact translation do not add any do not say like he's he's really sorry for the items that he dropped if he doesn't say I'm sorry but am I gonna be wearing a microphone how's this gonna work for the items that he dropped if he doesn't say I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:24:45 But am I going to be wearing a microphone? How's this going to work? You're going to be wearing a microphone, yeah. Could you listen in? I could call you on my phone. I'll call you. Oh, that might cost a lot. It doesn't matter, you're paying. So basically the goal is that I will read
Starting point is 00:25:01 the room and understand if I bring you two in. Or I will just solve the case without you. Single-handedly. And we'll never hear the end of it. So at what point should I do the fingerprints? I need to see his coat hangers as well. I'm not sure that descending onto a stranger's house and asking for their fingerprints in their own home is really right.
Starting point is 00:25:21 Or a DNA swab if you feel that's a bit more comfortable. So we just need to pluck a bit of hair out of Chau's head. Or what else? Go do his hairbrush. Yeah go through his hair, I could just brush his hair, it could sit there. Do you mind if I brush your hair while recording you? Yeah I'll pin your toes whilst clipping them. That's what I'm taking. Would you like a pedicure, a manicure or a bearcat? He's going to wonder what happened when he woke up this morning, how the day went this way. Commence Operation Chell Ambush. Is this it?
Starting point is 00:26:04 That's it. Right. Alright, are you ready? Yep, are you ready? Almost. Almost. Key locked. OK, cool. I'm recording good luck okay wait oh sorry i need to call karen all right i know you can hear me so that's because you've muted, you've done what we said,
Starting point is 00:26:48 and we're just outside the house we're about to go in now. Yep, I'm gonna now put you in my pocket. Right, this is a very strange setup. Helen and I are together in our car. We're 15 minutes behind Lauren, Yul and Lars, who have just arrived at suspect Chell's house. So we have a, you can hear there's noise in the background, we've got a live link to Lauren's phone so we're hearing whatever she's going through. They've just arrived at Chell's doorstep and they're greeting them now. You can hear them walking into the house.
Starting point is 00:27:21 Hello! You can hear them walking into the house. Hello! Hello, how are you? Hello, welcome. Hi! Lauren from New Zealand. I'm Lauren. From New Zealand. Yes, from New Zealand.
Starting point is 00:27:36 Yes, I came to see you. Lauren Schell. Hi, Schell. Nice to meet you. Welcome. Thank you. So our plan is that we're going to be parked outside the house on standby, waiting for our cue to come in and take forensic prints, or to interrogate them further, or to leave the suitcase on the doorstep and then run away again
Starting point is 00:28:00 for a little prank to see how he reacts when he opens the door, or to see the evidence stirring him in the face oh did you make that yes for me coffee coffee coffee Mad me-alk. Mad me-alk! So who's that woman? His partner. What's that? Custard. There's also something we have to tell you, Shell. Lauren is a bit of a detective. I am his girlfriend but I also have another side to myself, which is detective.
Starting point is 00:28:50 OK. Can I ask you some questions, Chau? Because you might help know. It's about something in the area, so you might know. Can I record? Can I record it? Try it. Basically what I'm doing is learning to become a detective. Koa kōrero? Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero.
Starting point is 00:29:07 Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero.
Starting point is 00:29:15 Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero.
Starting point is 00:29:23 Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōrero. Koa kōr tēnā koe koe, koe koe Kristina? Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei.
Starting point is 00:29:31 Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei.
Starting point is 00:29:39 Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. Hei. 50, 60. 60? That's a lot. Okay, well I'm just going to come out and say it. Have you ever left a small navy corduroy three-piece suit on Christina's veranda? I did not understand. Have you ever left a little blue Manchester suit on Christina's staircase? No. I think it is, though. Well, I have no...
Starting point is 00:30:26 No. No? Okay. Maybe I'm getting things a bit confused. Now you can see why I'm not a qualified detective yet. I'm just learning. Maybe I've got the mysteries mixed up, because the other one I'm looking into is
Starting point is 00:30:43 relating to a brown suitcase. No. A brown vintage suitcase? No. Well, fuck! I can't hear when you keep eating those. Can you sleep eating those? Jesus. You've never carried a vintage suitcase up to Christina's balcony where you've been 40 times. 40 to 60 or 70 times. The reason I ask, because this is why I'm pretty certain you have something to do with it, is because Lars told me about the time that you left a small children's cow stool on his front porch.
Starting point is 00:31:42 That's right. Correct. Yes, that is right. Can you just confirm for the microphone that you did do that? I did it. She just got a confession for the cow stall. Confession? Yeah. For the first one. For the first one. So yeah essentially that happened and then a few months later the suit appeared. So it's just a little bit suspicious that the cow stool would show up on Lars' doorstep and then a small suit would show up on Christina's doorstep. I can't solve this. Really?
Starting point is 00:32:21 Do you think she's hilarious? She's doing a great job. Do you think she's mad? She is mad. Which we know there's a street. She's got a third of the confession we need. We've sold a third more of this crime. This is huge. He is a prankster, isn't he?
Starting point is 00:32:36 Very big. Do you think he would be quite proud of this kind of prank? Because I think it's really funny. Putting a suitcase on a doorstep in a suit and never saying anything for 12 years. I think it's a great joke. It's better than the cow stool even. I wish it had been me. Assistant detectives. They're just waiting in the car.
Starting point is 00:33:02 Okay, bring him in. Karen and Helen. Detectives. Please enter. Come in, beep the horn. Beep the horn. Oh, they got the message. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:20 Are we going to get kicked? I hope so. Here they come. Here they are. Chill, chill, chill. This is Karen and Helen. Hi Karen. Nice to meet you. We were getting quite jealous of hearing you snucking. We've got you for one of the crimes though. We'll just have to change the podcast to only be about that. The case of the cow stool? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:49 Why did you leave the cow stool? So ugly. So you just thought it would be funny because it was ugly? Yeah. Where did it come from? Returen. It's the first case you've solved a third of. Yes.
Starting point is 00:34:04 So you've solved 33.3% of a case now. It's the first time. It's better than zero. Better than zero. So congratulations. It drops to 25% if you factor in season one. I guess the suit was hanging on a coat hanger when it was left on the thing.
Starting point is 00:34:22 So I was just wondering if I could have a look at your coat hangers. Where's your bedroom? Okay, great. Lovely day to solve a crime. Yeah. This was not the Sunday you expected, I imagine. I hope it's okay that we showed up to your house. No hard feelings.
Starting point is 00:34:46 I did just notice there was a tiny little wooden horse stool on wheels. That's mine. A horse stool on wheels? Yeah, in the corner by when you go towards the bathroom. Not a cow? No, children. Yeah, it's about that big. Where's that heading to?
Starting point is 00:35:02 Which doorstep is that going on? I was feeling a little bit bad about this because I was like, I haven't seen Shell in a lot of years and we're coming to have a nice coffee and then this happens, so I'm sorry. That was easy. You want to get to your bike? Yeah. That went down okay. Yeah, that was perfect. You turn off. Slightly awkward. Yeah. Yeah, that was perfect.
Starting point is 00:35:28 You can turn off. Slightly awkward. Yeah, that's definitely the name of the game. We're driving away from Chal's house, jubilantly celebrating solving at least one case of reverse theft in the local area. And our minds slowly start turning to the daunting task of finding the real mastermind behind this operation. Chell is no longer a suspect for the suit or the suitcase and we're getting nowhere with ex-lover Mikel, cousin Klaas and cousin Per. We started pressuring Vanya for more information but she is giving us nothing.
Starting point is 00:36:06 So we turned to our biggest, final hope, the grey hair that we extracted from inside the suitcase. If we could get a DNA profile on that, would that lead us to the perpetrator? Who will the hair belong to? You tell me. If you send me a photograph. Oh, what do you mean? Sorry? What do you mean? Is it the accent or is it just what we're actually saying? No, no, not the accent at all. I can perfectly understand that. What I'm trying to sort of say is I've got this impression in my head that you've wrapped sellotape around one shaft of hair to keep it secure.
Starting point is 00:37:06 That's what I've got in my head at the moment. So I need to make sure. I'm just going to go, because I've got it right here. I'm going to send it to Karen and then she's going to send it to you. Is that possible quickly? To just get that look? I think you'll be really impressed. Yeah, this is impressive.
Starting point is 00:37:18 Are you going to do it on WhatsApp? I'm just going to go get the hair. Right, good. Okay, let's do it. I'm here. I'm back. to go get the hair. Right, good. Okay, let's do it. I'm here. I'm back. Oh, yeah, we're just, you know, just talking about you behind your back. Yeah, no, I can tell.
Starting point is 00:37:33 Yeah, this is, I'm not sure you're going to be overly impressed with this, actually. Now I'm ready. It's all sold out again. Right, hang on a minute. Here we go. Let's see this. Oh, look at that.
Starting point is 00:37:43 It looks like a little heart in the background. Oh, no. Okay. Right, wait on a minute. Here we go. Let's see this. Oh, look at that. Looks like a little heart in the background. Oh, no. Okay. Right, wait a second. What am I looking at here? This is brilliant. You've done a great job here. Right. Really? I love praise. It's not sticking out the end, is it? Off the corner?
Starting point is 00:38:00 No, no. It doesn't look a little bit like it is, Lauren. Oh, shit, it is a bit. Oh, no. Oh, shit, it is a bit. It actually is. That is so embarrassing. I hadn't noticed that. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:38:17 Is it contaminated forever? Well, it's not a problem if that's the free end of the hair, as in the bit that the hairdresser has a go at then we're probably all right but hopefully hopefully it's that end send that to me via some sort of secure mail system and then um i'll um i'll do some microscopy on it and see what we're dealing with. That is so kind of you, Jo, to offer that. Can I ask one weird question, which is not verging on inappropriate, but, I mean, that's who we are. So can you tell the location of where the hair comes from?
Starting point is 00:39:02 Assuming it's human, can you tell the location of where that hair comes from on the body, i.e. if it's like... Yeah, sometimes....ear hair or a pube or from the head? Yeah, sometimes. can you tell the location of where that hair comes from on the body i.e if it's like yeah sometimes hair or a pube or from the head yeah sometimes there was a pair of male underpants in the suitcase which is why i was wondering if it oh i see right okay well i mean when you look at it does it look like a pube very long one i mean it's hard to say because i can't see it. But I guess the bit that's sticking out the top, I mean, that could be from anywhere. I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to take it to the lab and have a look under the high power.
Starting point is 00:39:34 Oh, I wish we could come with you. Well, I'll try and see what I can do. You don't want to sit anywhere near a professional environment without that. Well, we could move a microscope into an area where you can't break anything or do anything. The hallway? We could put it in the car park and then say, right, this is the only area that we feel that you can safely operate. you can safely operate.
Starting point is 00:40:06 Just regarding being out in the car park, though, to your earlier point, you said to make sure there's no, like, wind gusts that could blow the hair over. So, yeah, I just keep that in mind with the timing. So that means you're going to have to give me your address. Yeah, I'll do that. Not on air, though. No, but that means I'll be in possession of where you live just so you know I can just throw that later that's all right I'll write it down on paper and then I'll burn it after I've sent it that's absolutely fine because DNA actually can tell us
Starting point is 00:40:38 about the nationality and the like if they're Swedish or not as well right no oh it can't Like if they're Swedish or not as well, right? No. Oh, it can't. Have you been reading again? Yeah, what did you Google to find it? Have you been on the internet again? But you can submit a DNA, do a DNA test of your dog to find out what like breeds like it was. It's like half German Shepherd.
Starting point is 00:41:02 And so I thought it'd be the same for humans. It was. It was like half German shepherd. And so I thought it'd be the same for humans. I would love to know what dog breed would come back if we submitted some of Lauren Kilby's DNA. We should do that. We should do that. That would be fun. Be like a spaniel crossed with something. A corgi. I would not be a corgi. Oh, my God. I wanted to with something. Corky. I'm dressed with a spaniel. I would not be a corgi.
Starting point is 00:41:27 Oh, my God. I wanted to see what your DNA looks like. I've done that DNA test. It didn't tell me I was a dog. Did it not? No. It told me I was Ginger. Okay, so we've received the exhibit, the hair exhibit.
Starting point is 00:41:48 This is referenced H01 hair. It's sent from exhibits officer Helen McLaughlin. Remove it from its tape and mount that hair onto a microscope slide so that we can examine it in detail. There's a small grey hair that I can examine it in detail. There's a small gray hair that can see under the tape. Just peeling back the tape, removing that hair with forceps, and now we're placing it on a microscope slide. Times 10, 10 times the magnification of the hair.
Starting point is 00:42:20 Increase the magnification, and we're gonna go up to 40 times. Once we find it, there it is, 400 times magnification. So we can have a really good look at this thing. Working at that magnification everything is massive. So there's the hair, we can record all the features of it and we now need to compare that hair to a set of reference hairs from humans, from animals and things like that
Starting point is 00:42:49 and see whether or not any match. So the results are in and we have a match. We have a match. We have a match. We have a match. We have a match. Coming up next. Helen, this is problematic on so many levels.
Starting point is 00:43:06 Her husband is a psychiatrist, so you just take it easy. Oh, no. There's two things to kind of come clean about. Do you know somebody called Vanya? Is she your friend? Yes. Yes. She's like a sister.
Starting point is 00:43:21 Can I help you ladies? So we know that it's... What? I think we've got a lead.
