Starting point is 00:00:00 Exploring four seasons of Courage Incorporated with Duncan Sinclair. Join me as we hear courageous and powerful voices. Gun violence issues or like if we're on fire, we cannot deal with that stuff. On Dragon's Den, they always say to people, you're not an entrepreneur. Anyone who have the guts to set up a company, that's an entrepreneur. Commerce looks very different on the continent of Africa. How are we inviting people with those experiences into the classroom? That's bad management at that institution. They're turning down an idea.
Starting point is 00:00:30 I was going to ask if you were going to take a run at the bank, but we'll get that for another conversation. Subscribe now to Courage Incorporated, wherever you get your podcasts. Something very bad has happened and somebody is about to get in a lot of trouble. We have gone to quite a massive effort to get lovely Jo Millington to actually, for free, take the one piece of evidence we had for this case, which was the grey hair that we found on the suitcase,
Starting point is 00:01:03 and she's currently forensically examining it. You seem to mention very in passing after we'd arranged this and we'd told you multiple times we're doing this. Tell all the podcast listeners, Helen,
Starting point is 00:01:14 what you mentioned to me casually. I'm pretty sure that's my hair. Helen. I said it. I said it at the time. I literally don't know what to say. Helen, this is problematic on so many levels. A, I don't remember you having short, spiky grey hair. So how could that be your hair?
Starting point is 00:01:34 Because you've all got long hair. A bit of it was actually flapping out because the exhibits officer over here that I'm looking at right now didn't actually package it up properly. The only evidence was not correctly taped down. It was sticking out the evidence, just freely being exposed to the world. And I probably touched it. So it's probably got my DNA on it now.
Starting point is 00:01:53 So now I'm going to get framed for this crime. I just sometimes feel like you guys get a notion and you sort of run away with it. And it's kind of nonsensical. Because I remember at the time telling you this, like you've got selective memory, both of you do. I remember saying it's kind of nonsensical because I remember at the time telling you this like you've got selective memory both of you do I remember saying it's probably my hair okay Helen let's just say let's just for argument's sake say at the time you told us 14 times that it was your hair let's just say that happened let's just say that happened just for argument's sake suddenly Karen and I are talking in our group whatsapp group oh we're so excited to talk to Jo Millington,
Starting point is 00:02:26 we're going to send the piece of hair. Karen's like, can you go to the basement and find the hair? I'm like, no thanks, I'd rather not. And she goes, go down to the fucking basement, find the hair. Constant back and forth messages about the hair. At no point did you say, hey, might I remind you that that's my hair, don't bother. This is the first time someone's been really in trouble in this case,
Starting point is 00:02:44 and I'm just happy it's not me. I just honestly think how we're going to manage this relationship because joe millington is potentially one of my favorite people not only on this podcast but potentially on earth how are we going to fucking prove to her that we're worthy of her help helen Helen! Yeah. Yeah, it's not great, is it, Ellen? No, it's not great, is it? No. Right, I'm going to get a biscuit.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Jo, I just can't, I still am very incredibly grateful that you have done something very professional for us. Well, it's an ongoing process. In the real business, do you usually have an equivalent detective that you work with doing a drum roll or something like how do you how does this usually work in the real world obviously that would be nice but no we just normally work on my own finish it have a ginger biscuit or something to celebrate work on my own finish it have a ginger biscuit or something just celebrate well we'll add a massive drum roll in sound design so you can have what you deserve okay so imagine the drum roll is happening right now okay and then it ends now
Starting point is 00:03:57 so i received the package i've got it in front of me here. In that package, there was a little sticky piece of sellotape with a hair stuck to it, so I took that to the laboratory to try and establish whether or not we could figure out what type of hair it was. Went to a secret location with people that didn't consent to being filmed. Yes, Jo. Unfortunately, a little bit of the hair was poking over the end of the tape.
Starting point is 00:04:33 That's not ideal because it means that it's kind of been out in the fresh air for a little while. So anyway, so we got that safely under the microscope slide. This is when we start to work out what it is. So we're going to dive straight in on that you're ready for it yes another drum roll okay so the results are in and we have a match the medulla which is a bit in the middle was compartmentalized so it looked like little squares all the way along the shaft of the hair and that in itself tells us that it's animal
Starting point is 00:05:15 it's animal so it's not human i've got a little tiny thing to come click two tiny things to come clean about this could be the time when you when you start to confess as to how that hair got there. If any of you have a cat or a dog, I'd be very interested to hear about it. There's two things to kind of come clean about. I think all of us here were hoping for the investigation that the hair would be human and lead us to our suspect. However, there's a bit of relief right now because shortly after we spoke to you last and honestly Lauren and I did not know this our exhibits officer who sat right next to me here had a bit of a confession to make well I
Starting point is 00:06:01 thought that it might be mine I've've just sent your WhatsApp picture of when I went through the photos that we took as we were extracting this forensic evidence that was the exhibits officer in action and she was collecting the the hair and I don't know if you could just see if there's any flaws you see with this process of the exhibits officer well there's a few obviously I mean the reason why gloves are impaired is that so you wear both so wearing one glove is probably not ideal. When I looked through the photos I saw that Helen's forensic hood was off because it was quite hot that day. Her ears were exposed which means that the little tufts of hair around her ears were also exposed and those are most likely to be short grey ones. I've inspected her head before and I get the impression that Helen's got quite short grey
Starting point is 00:07:01 hairs around the ears so I think when you're exposing your ears to a crime scene, it's likely that some are just going to fall off. So what we've got is we can absolutely conclusively exclude that it's human in origin. So then what we need to try and do is figure out whether or not we can narrow down the list of the animal kingdom and figure out what type of animal hair it is. What we've done so far is we've compared your suitcase hair to a number of control animals. And so as an example, we've gone through pig, dog, cat, wombat, horse, rabbit, deer, rats. Wombat? Sorry, can we go back to the wombat? Wombat, horse, rabbit, deer, rats. Wombat?
Starting point is 00:07:45 Sorry, can we go back to the wombat? Why did you include wombat? Well, I included that because of your heritage. But I just thought maybe you brought it there. Lauren is part wombat. Well, you might have a pet wombat If we had a pet wombat And then it had Dropped off your jumper or something
Starting point is 00:08:14 Then we need to figure that out So we can exclude Pig, horse, rabbit Deer and rat And we can exclude wombat So we're left at the moment With dog Cat rabbit, deer and rat. And we can exclude wombat. So we're left at the moment with dog, cat and mink. As we narrow, as we're sort of narrowing it down to dog, cat or mink,
Starting point is 00:08:38 I think Lauren has the next slight confession to make. We didn't necessarily secure the scene of the crime. And even if we had, what would we have used? That tape. And the cat could have just gone under the tape anyway. But essentially, we didn't shut the door to the lounge. And as a result, a cat made its way into the crime scene and onto the brown paper where we were inspecting the two items twice.
Starting point is 00:09:09 There's a cat entering the forensic examination area. That's the cat I nearly killed. Hold my mic, I've got to get rid of the cat. This could be... All right. There you go. Job done. It's coming back. The cat is entering forensic space.
Starting point is 00:09:24 What colour was it? It was it was white no it wasn't white it was black black and white if i had to put my house on the line which i'm obviously not gonna do okay because i've already on the line which I'm obviously not gonna do okay because I've already given you too much of my time already but I genuinely think it's dog or cat I feel pretty morally corrupt having submitted an animal hair to Joe Millington to professionally examine I feel pretty mortified I'm just relieved it's not mine I'm just concerned about what other like real job tasks you've set aside in order to examine our um cat here what crimes have lost a forensic scientist for the day because of us yeah i know let's not think about it in all honesty how many
Starting point is 00:10:19 hours from beginning to end of this goose chase let's's call it, have you spent on this hair? On this hair? Yeah. Probably a good day, I would think. Oh, Jesus. And that's not just me, that's the team. I'm so sorry, Jo. Oh, God. I'm going to die.
Starting point is 00:10:38 It's fine. It's fine. A wise person once said, we learn from failure, not from success. I don't actually know if it was a wise person involved in that saying, but it comes up if you Google inspirational quotes about mistakes. We have a real opportunity here to own our forensic failures, to learn from them and to grow.
Starting point is 00:11:07 Somebody also possibly once said, don't waste a good mistake, learn from it. So dearest Jo Millington, if you're listening to this, here is a promise, a promise which now features in a podcast episode for anyone to hear. We will never, ever let Helen near a crime scene again. This is episode nine of the case of the tiny suitcase. We have two days left in Sweden. Two days to catch the mastermind.
Starting point is 00:11:43 We're looking for a person who Vanya knows and trusts, and who also knows Christina. We have learned two very key pieces of information. Number one, the phone call. Yesterday, which was Thursday the 30th of June, at around 7.30pm, Vanya called to tell us, I have information. We later found out that she had just come off the phone with the perpetrator before calling us.
Starting point is 00:12:17 So in order for us to crack this case, we need to get our hands on suspects' phones, check their phone history and find the person who received a phone call from Vanya before 7.30pm on that day. Number two. Emotional attachment to the suitcase. Vanya has told us that the mastermind wants their suitcase back, so there has to be some sort of sentimental value attached to the suitcase.
Starting point is 00:12:48 Could it have been owned by the perpetrator's grandparents or great-grandparents? Could this be a link to the name on the suitcase label, W.M. Johnson? We have decided that we need to take the suitcase out with us today to get it in front of suspects and then coerce a confession by saying we're going to donate it to charity
Starting point is 00:13:09 or burn it before we leave. Will the fear of losing the suitcase make the mastermind step forward? Who the hell is William Johnson? Using both of these pieces of information to our advantage, there's only one thing we can do and that is to go on a rampage and confront the final suspects face to face. Check their phone history and threaten destruction of their beloved suitcase. Are we gonna find the mastermind today?
Starting point is 00:13:51 I bit him last night. Tiny little bites. Oh, what kind of tiny bites? Not bed bugs. No. Mosquitoes. It was probably you, Helen. Nibbling. Did notice you've got a bit of a hickey there actually yeah I noticed it in one of the interrogations earlier yeah I
Starting point is 00:14:14 didn't want to point it out but I don't remember I don't having I don't you're not a love bite kind of person I did did see it this morning. I've got one here as well. So you've been snacking on it? Yeah. Yeah. It's weird. I don't, I really don't remember you giving me a love bite. It's not normal behaviour.
Starting point is 00:14:32 This is not a fucking sex holiday, guys. We're here to solve crimes. We're not here to go around biting each other's necks. You're not a vampire. We did fall in between the beds twice last night. It's split apart. I can't. I can't. So it could be an injury from that. Oh so the bed sucked your neck? Yeah. And drew blood to the surface? Was that what happened?
Starting point is 00:14:59 You really like... It's outrageous. I'm really embarrassed. You've got a massive hickey. Yeah I'm so sorry. You've got a massive hickey. It's so obvious. Yes. I have to wear a hot scarf in summer. You've got a massive connective, it's so obvious. Is it? Yes. I have to wear a hot scarf in summer. You're wearing casual scarf. First the tie now this. Actually the tie might cover it. You better put some face cream on it.
Starting point is 00:15:15 Why did you suck your neck? Put some cosmetics on it. I'm more worried about that's the thing that you did. We are in deep right now. We're in the thick of it. Yeah, this is it. This is where it all, it hangs on today and tomorrow. The whole fucking case. Are we going to just drive there now?
Starting point is 00:15:38 Yeah. Is she expecting us? No. That's the best though. I don't care anymore. I'm ready to make people feel uncomfortable. What's the connection to Helena who we're going to track down? She's one of the only other women that knows Vanya really well and Christina.
Starting point is 00:15:55 So we're on our way to where we think she lives. We haven't actually called her. We don't even know what she looks like. We don't even know who the fuck this woman is or how she fits in. And yet we're going to show up on her doorstep. Christina! She has no idea about the podcast even. At least people knew before.
Starting point is 00:16:10 Yeah. So we're going to go to the next left. This is worse than Chell. Twist. All right. How far away does this area? Eight kilometres. Eight and a half. Be there in 15 minutes. Hello there. All right. How far away does this have here? Eight kilometres, eight and a half.
Starting point is 00:16:28 Be there in 15 minutes. Hello there. Hello, Christina. How are you? Really fine. Linda and I are sitting here by the seaside in a pretty little town drinking lemonade. Sky is blue and the sun is hot. Nice day to solve a crime, we think.
Starting point is 00:16:45 We're honing in on a few people, specifically someone called Helena. Yeah? We're on our way to her house. We're not telling her we're coming. We think we've got her address right. We're gonna show up and we're gonna ambush her and ask her if she did it.
Starting point is 00:17:02 Yeah. Is that okay? Yeah, it's okay. Her husband is a psychiatrist, so you just take it easy oh no oh no we're about to get committed okay we'll see you soon see you soon bye bye i by the way it's not a love bite on my neck so i've got one on my leg as well unless you really went for my leg i've been scratching obviously i got bitten leg. I got bit on my neck yesterday so it does make sense but I'm not buying it. Christina doesn't think it's her at all. Yeah but Christina obviously
Starting point is 00:17:34 doesn't know otherwise we would have solved it by now. We've only up until this point been going on Christina's word. Why don't you ask? And it's not enough. Hey do you not feel like a detective for the first time really? Yeah I'm full of rush. Like, this is quite... I do feel excited. So we're really, like, getting closer. We're on a trail. Where's the theme tune? Get the theme tune on. Yeah, get it on.
Starting point is 00:17:51 Do you know what I mean? Cop chase. Like, what are we doing? This is a bit of a cop chase. All this way, and we think that we're gonna, like, solve something. Wee-oo, wee-oo, wee-oo. We're about to create the case. I can feel it.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Helena, Helena, Helena, we're coming for you. Helena. Helena. Helena. Helena. Helena. Helena. Helena. Helena. Helena. I can feel it. We're about to find out. We need to check your phone. That's going to be really hard. What's, can I check your phone in Swedish?
Starting point is 00:18:37 Helena, Helena. Why didn't you do it? I don't know. Why didn't you do it? Tell us right now. Helena, Helena, Helena, you go on. Yeah, come on. She's guilty. She did it.
Starting point is 00:18:55 She's a little bit truptidic. What is our strategy with Helena? Dunno. Don't worry, let's just wing it. Do you know what we're doing here? Let me see your phone. We're approaching a woman who looks like she could be called Helena.
Starting point is 00:19:15 She spots us long before we are in talking distance and just stands there squinting at us. So this long, awkward walk as we trespass across her land makes us feel even more uncomfortable and makes the lack of our search warrant even more apparent. Hey, are you Helena? Yeah?
Starting point is 00:19:33 Yeah? We were wondering if we could say hello. Can we ask you a few questions? Did you put a little suit on Christina's veranda? Yeah. Was it you? No, no. Not me. Not you? No.
Starting point is 00:19:49 No, no, no. Did you speak to Vanya on the phone yesterday? Yesterday? Yeah. After the... No, yesterday. No, no, I have not speak with her now. Vanya? Vanya, yeah. No, I have not spoken with her now. Vanya? Vanya, no. No Vanya.
Starting point is 00:20:08 Is there any chance we can see the phone calls you made last night on your phone? The phone calls? Your phone history? Calling history? Yes. Can we look at it? Face ID. Oh yeah. Okay, let's have a look. Okay, this is from today.
Starting point is 00:20:27 No Vanya today. No Vanya. Or yesterday. No Vanya. I am not speaking with her. It was a few weeks ago. It's okay. We just wanted to check your phone.
Starting point is 00:20:42 Okay. And you're clear. You're not a suspect anymore You're safe You're not going to jail There's one question I have Which is, is there anyone else that Vanya and Christina know very well That they spend a lot of time with
Starting point is 00:20:56 That you think could have done this The suit and the suitcase Anyone else we should speak to But Ulrika Have you Ulrika have you speak with her they have worked together she's a very interesting person
Starting point is 00:21:11 yeah we've been given that name before where does she live do you have her address yes that's really easy I think Ulrika speak with Ulrika what's her address I'm really left in the wild. I think it's really increasing. Erika. Speak to me.
Starting point is 00:21:27 Erika. Yeah, what's her address? Yeah. Cut to the chase. Tick tock, tick tock. We're getting so aggressive. Every time we get closer, we get more and more aggressive. I think it's when you just walked up to Pat her phone without hearing it.
Starting point is 00:21:40 It's okay. By leading every rule of the police, I'm back. Trespassing and stealing. Personal data. GDPR. Here we go. Is that her address? Okay.
Starting point is 00:21:55 Let me take a photo of that. How long is it? It's 20 minutes. Brilliant. Let's go. Let's go. 20 minutes. I think she is possible.
Starting point is 00:22:04 Guilty. Yeah. Great. Bye. Let's go. 20 minutes. I think she is possible. Guilty. Yeah. Great. Bye. Bye, Helena. Ulrika, we're coming for you. We're coming for you. I think this approach is working for you.
Starting point is 00:22:15 I'm loving it. Oh, really? Yeah, it's classic. It's turning up in people's houses. We're here to get answers and get taken on to the next suspect if it doesn't work. The clock is ticking. I love the way that each one is passing us with quite certainties that the one could be guilty. Yeah, I love it.
Starting point is 00:22:28 We've got less than 48 hours to solve this and we're really hotting up the trail. Yeah, I'm loving it. Eureka! Eureka! Eureka! Ooh! Why'd you do it? Eureka! Eureka! Guilty! Eureka! Why'd you do it?
Starting point is 00:22:46 Ulrika, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty. I'll track you down. Knock, knock, who's there? We'll go see Ulrika, but we won't know anything about whether or not she'll accept us. We're going in blind. So what do we know about Ulrika? Nothing. Absolutely nothing other than her name and where she lives.
Starting point is 00:23:13 We know her address. Yeah, that's where she lives. We know that she knows Helena. We know she's Swedish. We know that she knows Kristina. We know that she knows Vanya. So it's just yet another person whose phone we need to see. Just cut straight to the chase.
Starting point is 00:23:30 Let me see your phone and your call history. Hello, can I have your phone? Sure. Unlock it with your face, please. Oh, my food. Three minutes. What do you guys do when I'm not around? A lot.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Give each other love bites. That was probably the funniest moment. This is not a sex holiday. But it's not. And you guys are treating it like it is. I'm not even staying with my own boyfriend. That's how serious I take the case. If you like hotels, don't you dare try and put this on the case. She might not know anything about the podcast, The Suitcase.
Starting point is 00:24:05 Yeah. We all know immediately when she opens the door and sees it, she's going to be like, would you call this a wild goose chase? It is a bit, isn't it? An exciting wild goose chase. I wouldn't call it a wild goose chase, no. It's a crime that we're solving.
Starting point is 00:24:20 I guess you do have to go through every single lead and option. Correct. In order to disqualify it Correct Thing is we've got nothing left apart from this This is the final option We've got no one else after this Christina's back home thinking of names but She's been thinking all night and she's only got one for us
Starting point is 00:24:42 So this is it So will I just So we'll look at her in the eye and then I'll say, like, here it is. So either she'll look really shocked or she'll know that it's hers. Either she'll be slightly afraid and confused or she'll be, like, chuffed. Are you guys able to see the difference between confusion and excitement on people's faces? I reckon so. We're one minute away.
Starting point is 00:25:08 It's not this right, it's the next right. Thanks. Guys, we're a team. Oh god, I feel sick. Yeah, I feel sick too. Oh god, we're here. Oh fuck. You've arrived at your destination.
Starting point is 00:25:24 She's home. There's an old man getting out of a car. Who's there? Okay. Quickly, we need to be quick because I feel like they're... Can I turn around? Oh shit, she's out there. She's out there, don't. They're out there. Don't take photos! Come in! What will I do now? Are you going in? Oh, you're driving into their house. Park somewhere here.
Starting point is 00:25:38 Yeah, park here. Walk up to the seat. No, yes, absolutely. They can just watch us from the veranda. Right now? We've just got to get a confession and get out of there. ACAST powers the world's best podcasts.

No. V formation, please. Competence? Yeah. Shoulders back.
Starting point is 00:26:53 We have made the decision that the only way to present the suitcase back to its owner is in the form of a V formation. I will be at the front holding the suitcase, and Helen and Karen will be one layer behind. Ulrika? Here it is, your suitcase. This is yours. We know it belongs to you. You can stop playing games with us now. You want it back in the family, We know that now. Here it is. You left this on Christina's doorstep?
Starting point is 00:27:31 12 years ago. 2011. Yeah. This is really strange. We know. Trust us, we know. Here it is. You're welcome. Would you like to come in? Oh, sure. Yeah, thanks. All right.
Starting point is 00:27:49 A little friendly chat. Just a little chat amongst friends. Do you know somebody called Vanya? Yeah. Yeah. Is she your friend? Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:28:02 She's like a sister. Oh. We've been working together since... Well... 1978. 78. Very close, are you? When did you last speak to Vanya? Today? Yesterday.
Starting point is 00:28:24 Yesterday? On the phone yeah what did you speak about work yes I think it was yesterday yes yesterday in In what time, roughly? And I'd like to know how long that call was. I think you're on the wrong track. Yesterday at 16.13. 16.13. And how long was the call for? Wow. 12 minutes. Yeah, that's the call. I think that is the call we're looking for.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Because we know what happened on that call at that time. Okay. And what happened was Vanya asked you if she was allowed to tell us that she was involved in the incident with the suitcase. And you said yes, but as long as you don't say it was me. But it's very funny you can tell us we're, you know, we're your friends. Yeah. Oh, they're always like that. But Vanya is more friend. Yeah, she's like a sister. I can make it mysterious for you. I don't tell anything. If she said, don't say anything, I never say anything. It's very convenient that Vanya is like a sister to you. And we know for a fact that she loves and trusts the person who she confided in yesterday at 4.30.
Starting point is 00:30:25 So it's a big compliment to you. Maybe it was her brother. Who's her brother? Morgan. Morgan. Who's Morgan? I don't know about Morgan. You don't know about Morgan?
Starting point is 00:30:37 No. He is a real brother. Morgan. But first, before we just deflect onto Morgan away from you. Yeah, Eze. Did you honestly, did you do it? Did you ask Vanya to put the suitcase on Christina's veranda? No.
Starting point is 00:30:56 Are you the mastermind? Are you the clever, clever mastermind who came up with the idea? He's extremely clever. No. But I don't think he came up with the idea? He's extremely clever. No. But I don't think he came up with that idea. No. Did you put the tiny suit on Christina's, or did you order someone to put the tiny suit on Christina's porch?
Starting point is 00:31:14 No. I think it's Morgan. Why do you think it's Morgan? He's upset. He is a crazy person. Does he know Christina well? Yeah. Yeah. He lives nearby. Perfect. Does he know Christina well? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:27 He lives nearby. Perfect. What's his address? And he lives there in a red house with this Norwegian woman. Could this be the link to Norway that we've been looking for? Could the Norwegian woman be the one who owned the colour line fairies bag? So you're being a hundred percent truthful to us today you're not lying to us? No. That phone call though that's pretty suspicious. You can take a photograph over there. Yeah we will. Do you send each other text messages as well? SMS or Whatsapp?
Starting point is 00:32:00 No I didn't. Do you do that with her sometimes? Yes. Can we see those? Can we see the texts? I must check what's on it first. That's okay. I'm fluent in Swedish.
Starting point is 00:32:15 Maybe it's a love letter. I'm just the wife. Yeah. Oh, God, maybe we're going to expose something bigger. But they think often when we work, Vanya is my wife. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. When I go with them to on the day, what is you his wife? She'd be a great wife, but you're a great wife as well, I can imagine.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Let's have a look here, shall we? SMS? Why are you hiding it? What's that? They don't really read Swedish. Oh, do you? I'm fluent. Jag talar svenska.
Starting point is 00:32:48 She can speak it. Yeah, that's right. Nice you're in Sweden. Vanya. It is nice, but we need to solve this crime. Is that today? No. Long time ago.
Starting point is 00:33:00 The latest was... Yesterday. You wanted... 6th of June. What does that say? the latest was yesterday Sixth Anthony Joan what does it say okay I call you in a moment for God's sake we have a problem
Starting point is 00:33:14 yeah we have a problem more guns yeah well that's that then dead lead thank you for letting us trespass thank you and sorry Well, that's that then. Yeah. Dead lead. Dead end. Thank you. Thank you for letting us trespass. Thank you and sorry.
Starting point is 00:33:35 We're now waking up to a brand new day. Good morning, Helen. Hey, how you doing? After spending the evening researching Morgan. Good, how are you feeling? I'm prioritising sleep over breakfast and I feel OK. OK, good. I brought you your cheese roll as usual though. I'm just saying I'm just like my little bit, little butler monkey.
Starting point is 00:33:50 Did you just say butler monkey? Monkey butler, you prefer that? So as of right now, this very moment, we have 24 hours left to solve this crime. Alright, so we're going to Morgan Freeman's house. We think he might have a romantic interest in Christina, which is why he got involved in this in the first place. And then he got embarrassed, so he's like... We think he arrived probably around, I think,
Starting point is 00:34:18 Christine said roughly three months before it happened. Right, in the neighbourhood. It's obviously someone that Vanya loves and trusts and would protect a secret. Because it's her brother. So she would have met him, but not known him very well. Perhaps he was like, oh, I actually have a romantic interest in her.
Starting point is 00:34:32 How can I, like, get in there? And this was like a way in because he'd heard all about the fun that she had with the suit. With the suit. So it all stacks up, I think. It does. It all conveniently stacks up. Alright guys, we're probably about five, maybe more like eight minutes away from Morgan's house.
Starting point is 00:34:52 And the strategy is, we put the suitcase on the doorstep, we ring his doorbell, and we hope for the best. Helen, there's one thing I really need from you, we all need from you, and we don't want you to have one of your meltdowns. We need you to do that really expectant face like we've cracked it yeah i don't want you to have your this face you're doing now like you need to practice you're like we need to convince them that we are 100 certain that we've cracked this case i can do it i just need you to take it down a notch please you're making me feel really anxious. Good. You're being so fucking intense. It's better than you be.
Starting point is 00:35:27 You're so relaxed and like... Seriously. Walking slowly and stuff. We need you to be stressed and on edge. I'm not. I'm not taking this vibe on. Okay. What makes you feel excited and happy and on edge?
Starting point is 00:35:43 Skiing. Skiing. Skiing, okay. So what I want you to do is when we're standing at that door, I want you to imagine you're at the top of a mountain with the whitest slopes below you, not a person in sight. It's just you and your skis. Can you do that? You're smiling a bit, it's working.
Starting point is 00:36:11 I am, I am. It's my happy place. Okay. And maybe the slope's a little bit steeper than you have ever done before. Yes. Have you thought of doing motivational speaking, Lauren? No, I haven't, but that's actually a really good idea. You know what I mean? You could do this. Okay, so the slope is a bit steep, so you're a little bit apprehensive, but you're also in your absolute element.
Starting point is 00:36:34 At some point soon we'll be turning left onto the small road, and we'll be looking for a red house, where Morgan and Amna live. So what if she answers the door? Oh, that's going to screw us. Then we'll be gurning at a... That's really not involved. We're also creating a situation for him and his wife if he's been leaving strange bags on women's doorsteps.
Starting point is 00:36:59 No, no, no, that's fine. He should have thought about that before he did it. OK, we're in the woods. Wow, this is really off the beaten track. Isn't it just? Right, here's a house. Wow. Oh, but it's yellow though.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Oh no, this is it. This is it. Okay. It's a red house on the right, there's a barn. Yeah, this is it. You're gonna need to pack somewhere else. Oh my God, I'm really nervous. I'm actually stressing.
Starting point is 00:37:23 Oh no, the windows are open guys. Yeah, they're home. But I think, are they still in bed? What time is it? It's a Saturday and we're like... No, people don't sleep in. Around here I think they get up with the sun. Oh my god, where's the suitcase? In the boot.
Starting point is 00:37:40 Are we ready? I'm sure they would have curtain twitched by now. Alright, Helen? Yeah. You ready? I'm sure they would have curtain twitched by now. Alright Helen? Yeah. You ready? Yeah. Ready as I'll ever be. Confidence.
Starting point is 00:37:54 Ski field. Where's that little locker? Shh. Hello, are you Anna? Is Morgan here? He's maybe sleeping. Oh no, sorry. I can ask him. We've got to return something to him. Okay.
Starting point is 00:38:34 We're getting him out of bed guys. He's a slave. That's what I thought because the curtains were closed. We're getting out of bed and what if it's not him? I'm having heart palpitations. I'm about to have a heart attack. I think I'm on edge. We're actually getting him on a bed. He's getting out of bed. My little butler monkey. Do you like that? You like being called a butler monkey? Yeah I do actually. I feel good about this approach though. It's so good. We don't have to ask any questions. Are you going to say like, Vania asked us to return the case?
Starting point is 00:39:06 No, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm not going to say anything. I'm not going to, that's the thing, we're not going to say a word for about five minutes. Awkward silence. And then he'll start saying something in Swedish. Here he comes, here he comes. I can hear something. I can hear something. Hello, hello. Hello. Can I help you ladies? Here it is.
Starting point is 00:39:34 I don't know what it is. It's your suitcase. No. We're returning it to you. No, thank you. Well, I know what's going on. Oh, do you? Yeah, my sister Vanya.
Starting point is 00:39:49 Yes. Yes, and Christina. Yes. Yeah, I heard about the story. Oh, okay. Yeah. Vanya was telling that you were coming here for the Midsummer Eve or something. And then she told the background of the story.
Starting point is 00:40:03 Before that, I never heard about it. When was the last time you phoned Vanya? When did you last speak to Vanya on the phone? On the phone? Well, have a look at your phone records, shall we? Mm. What's the tour? Torsdag.
Starting point is 00:40:19 What's Torsdag? Thursday. Thursday. Correct. That was the last call. What time was that? Um, quarter past seven in the evening. Ah, okay.
Starting point is 00:40:32 15 minutes call. 15 minutes? What did you speak about? Half an hour, midsummer was, and she told me about that you were there. Yes. Oh, she's calling me about it over there. Yes. Oh, she's calling you. Put her on speakerphone. Put her on speakerphone.
Starting point is 00:40:55 Hello there. Hello, Vanya. Hello. Hi. We're at your brother's house. Yeah, I understood that. Yes. Doesn't he want to talk to you no no no he does
Starting point is 00:41:08 he's being really nice we took his suitcase back for him and we put it on his veranda like he did to Christina all those years ago and we found out that you had a nice chat with your brother on Thursday around 7 o'clock
Starting point is 00:41:23 yeah for 15 minutes do you remember what you talked about with your brother on Thursday around seven o'clock? Yeah for 15 minutes. Do you remember what you talked about with your brother on Thursday about seven o'clock? I think we were talking about, what were we talking about? We were talking about what we have been doing the last time and this sun is coming in again. Just the normal weekly talk we often have. That's not what he said. That's not what Morgan said.
Starting point is 00:41:54 He actually said that you spoke about something different. Did he say something different? Yeah, he did, Vanya. Yeah, he did, he did. We've got you. Is there anything else you want to tell us? Or is it not an honest day? Are you back to lying?
Starting point is 00:42:11 No, no, no, no. I'm still honest. I am. Okay. It's still the same story for me. So you have to find the rest and I think you have some problems. I understand that you have some problems.
Starting point is 00:42:27 Why do people keep telling us we have problems? We keep hearing that we've got problems. No, Johan said we have problems. Okay, fine. Okay. Thank you, Morgan. Bye. Bye.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Bye. See you tonight. We're going to take this away, and we think the nicest way of finishing this podcast is to donate this suitcase back to charity. So we're going to Gothenburg, and we're going to give it back to charity. So, yeah, that would be really nice, I think,
Starting point is 00:42:56 just to give it another life, you know. The other thing we were thinking of, actually, because we haven't actually decided, Karen, is that we're potentially going to do, like, a ceremonial burning of the suitcase in two weeks. Oh, OK. So we're going to put gasoline all over it and we're going to light it up and explode it into the night.
Starting point is 00:43:13 So if you see smoke coming from Black Lake, then you'll know that's it. Oh, OK. So anything... We'll have to look at the map if it's allowed to have open fire outside. Don't worry about that, it's fine. That's the least of our worries.
Starting point is 00:43:28 The real police will make an investigation of firing. We're not scared of the police. We are the police. So, OK, shall we just take that away and burn it then? Yes, you do. No problem. All right, Morgan, we'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that.
Starting point is 00:43:46 We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that.
Starting point is 00:43:54 We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that.
Starting point is 00:44:02 We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll do that. We'll feel bad. Honestly, do you think we should give up? It's all getting a bit much. No, don't say that. Honestly, do you think we should give up? We're feeling pretty hopeless. I just wonder if we just need to lie down in a darkened room for five minutes. No way. We don't have time for that. Shall I see how long it... Oh, Vanya's read the message. OK, wait. Pull over.
Starting point is 00:44:30 Vanya's thinking, I think, Lauren, the only hope we've got is that Vanya's going to take pity on us. That's where we're at. How depressing is that? How like pathetic is that? We've got Flushing begging on our knees, like, on the last final hour. No one in the police does that. No one in the police begs. We have lost our dignity today. We've lost our fucking dignity. OK, let's look at Vanya's Facebook. Morgan. Am I adding Morgan?
Starting point is 00:44:57 Oh, no, I've already added him. I'll message him. Do you want your suitcase back? We're donating it tomorrow. Vanya! What? She said, no, no, don't give up. You will make it. Go on, you will make it. Love, heart.
Starting point is 00:45:16 Karen, what does that mean? Karen! It's someone that we're close to. It's someone we're close, is what she's saying. So I don't think it's someone we haven't spoken to yet, or thought about. Okay, what about, let's think, let's think. No idea is a bad idea. Did she say that? No. Oh. I'm saying it. Oh. So we know who to say. What? I think we've got a lead. What?
Starting point is 00:45:46 Do you need to pee? She just said, read your list of persons again. Read your list of persons again. Read your list of persons again. Read your list of persons again. Read your list of people again. What does that mean?
Starting point is 00:46:02 What does that mean? What does that mean? What does that mean? Read your list of people again. What does that mean? What does that mean? What does that mean? Read your list of people again. What list does Vanya mean? We must have spoken to the mastermind. What list does Vanya mean? Coming up next.
Starting point is 00:46:19 I have something to tell you. Okay, guys. I honestly do not know who to trust. Is that person angry with me? I think that there's something going on. Does that person want me to feel bad? Oh god, this is a lot of pressure. I promise to never tell who this person is. Does that person care for me? That simple, small act had a butterfly effect of other cases of reverse theft that inspired other criminals in the local area to sort of victimise Christina.
Starting point is 00:46:49 How do you feel about that?
