Starting point is 00:00:00 So in my conversation with Ina Garten, I talked about my grandma Didi's insanely delicious peanut butter cookies. They're very sentimental to me because as my grandma, I still have grandma Didi's handwritten recipe on an old index card. In fact, we printed that exact card in Didi's own handwriting onto a soft cotton tea towel. This is not your average tea towel. You can bake the cookies from the recipe printed on the towel and then clean up with the same tea towel when you're done.
Starting point is 00:00:30 It's a tea towel doublet. It's part of our Wiser Than Me merch collection. To check it out, head to wiserthanmeshop.com. Hi everyone, Julia here. Today I'm sharing a conversation I had with my good friend Stephen Colbert on his podcast, The Late Show Pod Show. I've been on The Late Show with Stephen a few times over the years and we always have a blast, a complete blast. We recorded this episode in front of a live audience at Chicago's Auditorium Theater. It was bananas fun. And it was the first night of the Democratic National Convention. We look back on a few special moments from Veep. I am truly amazed that Veep still feels so spot
Starting point is 00:01:18 on with today's politics. It's wild. You're also going to hear highlights from the convention and Stephen's interview with former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, who shares her thoughts on President Joe Biden's decision to pass the torch to Veep Kamala Harris. You can listen to more of Stephen's hilarious whip smart conversations on the Late Show Pod with Stephen Colbert.
Starting point is 00:01:40 New episodes are released every day wherever you get your podcasts. I hope you enjoyed this episode. Ladies and gentlemen, please rise for the Chicago National Anthem. Oh, say can we eat hot Italian dip beef? Deep dish proudly inhaled until our hearts stopped to beat. Lower Whacker Hancock, no that's not dirty talk But the Yankees can go To hell for taking resort Chicago Rivers dyed green
Starting point is 00:02:35 Michelle O is our queen Last time I took the L Someone showed me his P. His lower whackers, wiener circle they surely love to swear. Stop f***ing up stuff with my P. You stupid bitch. For the land of the P. P. And of the Bees
Starting point is 00:03:09 And the home of the Bears Play show! It's the Late Show with Stephen Colbert Live in Chicago tonight tonight, showtime. Classy student welcome, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Featuring Louis Cato and the Late Show fans. Now, live from the auditorium in Chicago, it's Stephen Colbert! There you go. There you go.
Starting point is 00:04:02 There it is. Hello, Chicago! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!
Starting point is 00:04:10 Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!
Starting point is 00:04:18 Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! There you go. Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Welcome. Thank you, everybody.
Starting point is 00:04:32 Please have a seat. We gotta go. We're live. Please have a seat, everybody. Thank you so much. Welcome. Welcome, one and all, in here, out there, all around the world, to the Late Show. I'm your host, Stephen Colbert. Ladies and gentlemen, as you can tell, as you can tell from the vibrations, we are live from Chicago tonight.
Starting point is 00:04:55 The Windy City. Following night one of the Democratic National Convention, and we are broadcasting from the historic auditorium feeling. There you go. That auditorium feeling, you can't get anywhere else. How are you feeling, 4,000 people in my live audience? The auditorium is beautiful and historic and cavernous. Jim, can we get a shot of the balcony up there? That balcony right there.
Starting point is 00:05:39 There we go. Now, now Jim, Jim, please. Jimmy, can we please get, can we get a shot of how I look from up there? Hello! This is, mwah! This is the first theater I've ever performed in where the last row of seats comes with supplemental oxygen. No, obviously we're here in Chicago because of the DNC.
Starting point is 00:06:14 It was an extraordinary night and extraordinarily long. Technically, technically, and correct me if I'm wrong, technically we've just rolled over into the first night of the 2028 campaign. The evening, very exciting, it started with some lesser-known Democrats. For instance, Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow came out with a big old book, either that or she's a teeny tiny lady. They should have provided a banana for scale. We also heard from Gina Raimondo, Commerce Secretary and star of the short-lived CBS series Everybody Loves Raimondo.
Starting point is 00:06:52 And of course this was followed by a cavalcade of America's most electrifying lieutenant governors. I'm a lieutenant gov head, what can I say? Lieutenant Governors. I'm a Lieutenant Govhead, what can I say? We also heard from New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who wasted no time in making no sense. Hello, Democrats! Are you ready to elect Kamala Harris, the first president of the United States? Yes.
Starting point is 00:07:30 Yes, the first president of the United States. Now, it seems like that was a mistake, but it's like George Washington famously said, that little girl was me. Tim Walls here. Tim Walls didn't speak, right? He didn't speak. Tim Walls didn't speak right? He didn't speak. Tim Walls didn't speak tonight but he was interviewed on the sidelines at one point and his kids added a little something extra. It's a privilege. It's an honor and I can tell you this ticket, feeling that energy, just a privilege.
Starting point is 00:08:02 That's fun, little bunny ears behind dad's head. After that, they gave Chuck Schumer an atomic wedgie. Then we got an unscheduled speaker. Surprise, it's Kamala! Which one month ago became the Democrats' campaign slogan. Thanks, buddy. We got a great speech from Team USA coach and Chicago Bulls legend Steve Kerr, who has some history in the United Center. A lot of good stuff has happened in this building, especially in the 90s. You young people Google Michael Jordan and you can read all about it.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Google Michael Jordan, he thinks young people don't know who Michael Jordan is? What did it feel like the moment you heard that, Mike? It became personal with me. I can imagine. I can imagine it would. Kerr finished his speech with a zinger. After the results are tallied that night, we can, in the words of the great Steph Curry, we can tell Donald Trump, night night.
Starting point is 00:09:48 Thank you. Oh damn, that is a really good hit. That is a solid punch. That is a good hit, but Steve, we know if you really want to put Trump to sleep, just sit him in a courtroom. Then we heard from my first guest tonight, Secretary Hillary Clinton, who saluted... The secretary saluted Biden's legacy. He has been democracy's champion at home and abroad.
Starting point is 00:10:33 He brought dignity, decency, and confidence back to the White House. He also brought a soft-serve machine, if you say please he will let you do a swirl directly into your mouth. Clinton was confident about beating Donald Trump. We have him on the run now. He can run? What does that look like? What does that look like? Then Congressman Jamie Raskin took the mic and gave a little Chicago history lesson. We meet in this great city tonight
Starting point is 00:11:18 where Abraham Lincoln was nominated in 1860 to save the union and where Franklin D. Roosevelt was renominated by Democrats in 1940. And let's just skip over 1968. Who remembers who was doing what we also heard we also heard from firebrand Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett who listed some of Trump's stats. With 34 felonies, two impeachments and one porn star to prove it. That sounds like the saddest Christmas Carol ever. 34
Starting point is 00:12:08 felonies, two impeachments, and a porn star got him horny. Crockett told a great story about going to the vice president's residence in distress and feeling seen. The most powerful woman in the world wiped my Crockett told a great story about going to the vice president's residence in distress and feeling seen. The most powerful woman in the world wiped my tears and listened. Beyonce was there? After that, Senator Raphael Warnock gave one of the greatest speeches I've ever heard. He burned that house to the ground, going biblical on Trump.
Starting point is 00:12:46 I saw him holding the Bible and endorsing a Bible as if it needed his endorsement. He should try reading it. Of course, no, no, of course I've read it, Rafael. And I live by one inspiring passage, $59.99, $68 in Canada. Obviously, obviously this convention is being held to nominate Kamala Harris, but tonight was Biden appreciation night. Oh yes, it's Biden's night and the feelings gratitude for many years of service to our country, sir. The Biden tributes.
Starting point is 00:13:38 That's right. That's the feeling. That's the feeling. That's the feeling. That has gone. The Biden tribute started before primetime with delegates receiving a gift bag that included Cup of Joe coffee. A much nicer gift than when LBJ dropped out in 68 and gave those Chicago delegates a big bag of Johnsons. I call it jumbo. At last, at long last, it was time for Biden's speech. The president was greeted by a four and a half minute
Starting point is 00:14:20 standing ovation. After decades, that was lovely. But after decades of tireless public service, President Biden entered to a crowd of thousands of people chanting his name. If only he knew you could get the same thing by telling fart jokes on CBS. Biden stood on that stage. Biden stood on that stage, gave a powerful speech, and proved to the country and to the world that he can stay up past 8 p.m. Last one. Last one, I swear.
Starting point is 00:14:59 Biden saved up all the energy he did not use at that debate and uncorked it tonight. Just popped open a cap. Taking a victory lap for his accomplishments. Donald Trump promised infrastructure week, every week for four years, and he never built a damn thing. That's not entirely fair, sir. He did build all those little burger towers. Now, I'm sure he designed them, as he often does. Biden reminisced about his childhood in Scranton. My dad, you say there wasn't a whole hell
Starting point is 00:15:41 of a lot to drop down on my kitchen table at the end of the month. I come from a basic middle-class family. Three bedroom house, four kids, a grandpop living with us. All four of my grandparents sleeping in the same bed. Tell you. Now folks, our only hope is that I find a chocolate bar with a gold ticket inside.
Starting point is 00:16:01 No, when I did, no, I'm not joking, folks. When I did, I did. When I did, damn it. When I found that ticket, damn it, I went to those Oompa Loompas to make sure they could unionize. Now, because the night went long, James Taylor was cut from the program at the last minute. How could they cut sweet baby James? Or should I say, vengeful baby James? Oh, he will bring down the fire and the rain. But you know, ultimately I can understand
Starting point is 00:16:34 why they had to cut JT. I mean, it's not like he's the lieutenant governor of anything. You don't want to cut any of those people to get up on time. Biden closed his speech with what I believe is a fitting and moving lyric that summed up his entire political career. I can't sing worth a damn, so I'm not going to try.
Starting point is 00:16:59 I'll just quote it. The work and prayers of centuries have brought us to this day. What shall our legacy be? What will our children say? Let me know in my heart when my days are through, America, America, I gave my best to you. Thank you, Joe. Thank you. Overall, tonight this convention had joy, excitement, and a clear vision for the future. And even though I am exhausted, it's been an amazing week.
Starting point is 00:17:46 It's been what? One night? How is that possible? We got a great show for you live. Thanks. Thanks. Coming up, Hillary Rodham Clinton. Starting point is 00:21:46 you by the Coligard test. Coligard is a one-of-a-kind way to feel more in control of your colon cancer screening, which is something everyone at average risk needs to start doing at 45. Yes, you heard that right, not 50, not 52, 45. With the Coligard test, you can screen on your own time at home with none of the prep that's required of a standard colonoscopy. It is the only FDA-approved, non-invasive screening test that looks for both altered DNA and blood in your stool. Even if you don't have any symptoms, it is so important to test beginning at 45 because
Starting point is 00:22:22 many patients with early-stage colon cancer have no symptoms at all and are diagnosed through screening. And in addition to the convenience and ease of use, it's also affordable. Most insured patients pay zero dollars. With zero downtime, no special preparation, and a use-at-home screening test that's delivered right to your door, there's no reason that we should let our health take a back seat. So if you're 45 or older and at average risk, ask your health care provider about screening for colon cancer with the Coligard test. You can also request a Coligard prescription today at coligard.com slash podcast. Do not use Coligard if you have had adenomas, have inflammatory
Starting point is 00:23:04 bowel disease and certain hereditary syndromes, or a personal or family history of colorectal cancer. False positive and negative results may occur. Any positive results should be followed by a colonoscopy, not a replacement for colonoscopy in high-risk patients. The Coligard test is available by prescription only. Hey, everybody. Welcome back to The Late Show, live from Chicago. Ladies and gentlemen, my first guest tonight is a former senator and secretary of state who made history as the first woman to be nominated for president by a major political
Starting point is 00:23:44 party. Fun fact, she got the most votes. Please welcome back to The Late Show, Hillary Rodham Clinton. MUSIC Well, Madam Secretary, thanks so much for coming back. It's nice to see you again. It is so great seeing you here in Chicago. And welcome back to Chicago. You're in Illinois, girl.
Starting point is 00:24:08 Well, yeah. I was born in Chicago. I was raised in Park Ridge. I graduated from Maine High School South after going to Maine East for a bunch of years and still have a huge number of friends still would never ever put ketchup on a hot dog I have all of my Chicago experiences you know okay just came from the first night of the DNC here in 24.
Starting point is 00:24:46 How did it feel to be back up on that stage, because it looked like it felt pretty good? It felt so good, because, I mean, the whole atmosphere was incredible. It was electrifying. I would say it's the second best audience in Chicago tonight. Well, wait a minute. I mean, technically, this is a very political answer. Technically, that was the best audience last night. Touché. Well done. last night. But this is by far the best audience today or anywhere, right?
Starting point is 00:25:34 And this theater, I mean, don't you want to like come here every month? I mean, this is just amazing. Look at this. Well, every time I'm in Chicago, every time in Chicago, I think, why did I ever leave? This is the greatest city in the world. It's such a great city. Such a great city.
Starting point is 00:25:49 Let's get back to the DNC. Let's get back to the DNC. The last time you stood before that crowd was in 2016, when you accepted the nomination. Here we are right there. There you are. Oh my gosh. We all remember well.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Back in the day. You made history. Yeah, yeah. Eight years later, eight years later, what sticks with you about that night? About the 2016 night. 2016 night, yeah. You know, in many ways, it was so overwhelming to be there,
Starting point is 00:26:15 to be on that stage, to accept that nomination. You know, I think back on it, and I just so overcome by, you know, the emotion of the moment, the meaning of it historically and could not have been, you know, more moved or more honored. But it was kind of a blur in a way because there was so much going on and we were getting geared up for the campaign. But it was the same feeling of hope and real optimism that we could continue the progress that had been made under President Obama over the prior eight years.
Starting point is 00:26:59 So it was just an overwhelming moment for me. Well tonight you gave a powerful speech. You gave a powerful speech. Tonight was very different. You gave a powerful speech tonight. And I'm curious, you touched on many things, but if there's one thing you want people to take from the speech tonight, what would it be? You know, I really know Kamala Harris's heart, her integrity.
Starting point is 00:27:18 I think she has the character, experience, and vision to be our president. And I hope the American people agree. I mean, that's really what my argument is. Well, tonight, tonight, President Biden gave a quite moving speech. Yes he did. And passed the torch selflessly and patriotically to Kamala Harris. You've seen a lot in politics.
Starting point is 00:27:50 You've been around the block, lady, and you've seen a lot of shocking things. Did this surprise even you, this turn of events over the last month? Yes and no. I mean... That's a very political answer. No, it was. Yeah, I kind of live in the world of yes and no. Because yes, it was shocking for any leader
Starting point is 00:28:16 to voluntarily give up power. But I thought that was one of the most selfless acts of patriotism I'd ever seen, that the President was ready and willing to do that. And you know, as you can see from the speech tonight, he got so much done. You know, I said in my speech that, you know, he returned decency and dignity and competence to the White House, and he got an enormous amount of, you know, legislation through the relationships with our allies around the world standing up to adversaries
Starting point is 00:29:01 like Putin and Russia. I mean, you look at his record, it was pretty remarkable. And it will go down in history as a great achievement. And for him to decide, okay, it's time for me to pass the torch and to let my vice president go forward, I was so touched by that. I've known the president a long time. I've served with him. I was a colleague of his in the Senate. I was secretary of state when he was
Starting point is 00:29:32 vice president in the Obama administration. And what he said, and I think you had this clip, Stephen, from the song that he and his family like so much. He really has given his best. He gave his best to his family under the most excruciating painful circumstances. He gave his best to the state of Delaware that he represented for so many years and he's given his best to our country. That may seem a little old-fashioned to some people. I think it is in the highest, you know, standard of service and leadership that our country has to offer and I'm so proud of him and leadership that our country has to offer.
Starting point is 00:30:05 And I'm so proud of him. And I thought tonight was a great moment. I agree. I think that and disagreeing with the Supreme Court over immunity is one of the most patriotic things he could have done. 100 percent. Now, you have a new book. Yes.
Starting point is 00:30:20 It's called Something Lost, Something Gained, where you write about moving past your dream of being president. And how does it feel now to see a woman who's not you reaching for that same dream? Well, you know, I thought a lot about what it would feel like. And I have to say, it feels really good. It felt exhilarating. It feels exhilarating, it feels exciting. You know, maybe because I've known Kamala and have a lot of confidence in her and what
Starting point is 00:30:52 she's capable of doing. I think I know how hard the job is and have concluded she is more than ready to take it on. But when the president decided to step aside and then quickly endorsed his vice president, my husband and I quickly endorsed her as well, because we thought it was the right thing to do. And we thought that she deserved it and she'd earned it. So look, it is something lost, something gained.
Starting point is 00:31:25 And, you know, I'll be back actually in this theater on October 13th to talk about the book. So I'm very much looking forward to that. We're live. So we've got to go here for a second. But before we go, have you spoken to Joe Biden since he has stepped aside? Yes, several times. And in fact, tonight, both Bill and I spent time with him and Jill. Is he mad at people who made jokes about the debate?
Starting point is 00:31:55 He did not mention your name. Secretary Clinton, thanks so much for being here. The book is Something Lost, Something Gained. Hillary Rodham Clinton, everybody. We're going to have a conversation and yeah, it should be interesting, I hope. Sure. And it could be nine Democratic governors if the lieutenant governor takes over Minnesota when Tim Walsh becomes president. That's right.
Starting point is 00:39:29 Right. And after the election, it might even be 11 Democratic governors. You never know. That's right. That's right. Now, when the Biden-Harris ticket won back in the day, four years ago, you posted this. You said, Madam Vice President is no longer a fictional character. Yes. day four years ago yes you put you posted this yes said madam vice president is no longer a fictional character yes
Starting point is 00:39:52 Selena Meyer yes that was based on my experience on the show Veep and I'm hoping that I can post a similar thing in November that says, Madam President is no longer a fictional character. I heard that since Biden dropped out, there has been a 350% spike in viewership of Veep. I know. How crazy. Which I think is a good thing. It's a great thing, I think.
Starting point is 00:40:23 People might need reminding that Selena Meyer and Kamala Harris are not alike. Well, let me explain to you. On Veep, I played a narcissistic, like megalomaniac sociopath. And that is not Kamala Harris. It might be another candidate in the race. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:45 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:49 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:53 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:57 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:01 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. assign one of those characters from Veep to JD Vance. Do you know which one it would be? Yes. Who would that be? That would be Jonah Ryan.
Starting point is 00:41:07 Yeah. I mean. Can you imagine Jonah being sexually attracted to an Ottoman or something like that? I think you mean a couch, and I'm sure he's made love to many of couchs. Yeah. A sleeper sofa, if you will.
Starting point is 00:41:21 Yeah, a sleeper sofa. Veep used the harsh treatment of women in politics as a jumping-off part. Yes. For many of its brilliant moments. It certainly did. Is there a favorite scene that captured that aspect of Washington for you? Yes, there was a there was a moment on Veep in which the guy who played my, well he had many different roles on my staff, but at one point he was my press secretary Mike McClintock played by the brilliant Chicagoan Matt Walsh And he came to me with a speech and the speech began as a woman and I looked at him and I said first of all as A woman I'm not going to start a speech with as a woman because I can't identify as a woman.
Starting point is 00:42:07 As a woman, men hate that, and women who hate women hate that, which is most women. And so, yes, the show made a lot of fodder about... My favorite part about that line, it was the line you left out, which is like, I can't say as a woman, people can't know that. Oh, I forgot that. See, this is a thing.
Starting point is 00:42:28 Steven knows his show better than I do. I screwed up my own line. I can't believe it. We have to take a quick break. No, I won't do it. All right. You keep talking, but we're going to go to commercial. We'll be right back with more Julia Louis
Starting point is 00:42:38 Dreyfus, everyone. We're the one, the only, the national treasure. This is Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Julia. Yes? You know, Hillary Clinton was just out here. I know. It was so exciting. Now, you've met her before, and I hope you got a chance to talk to her backstage. I know, it was so exciting. Now you've met her before and I hope you got
Starting point is 00:43:05 a chance to talk to her backstage. I did, divine. Because you have a wonderful story. I do. About your first sort of interaction with her and I just, explain what happened here. Here's a prop, we'll have a prop in just a moment. Yes, well I was given as a gift while I was working on Veep as a matter of fact, my wonderful friends in the hair and makeup department got me a signed buck slip from Secretary Clinton while she was Secretary of State. Here it is. That's what the thing looks like. Yes.
Starting point is 00:43:34 Now, would you read to the people what it actually says? I will. It says, Julia, you're a great Veep. Hope you can get gun control, immigration and job creation this season all the best Hillary Rodham Clinton and It's dated 129 13 very nice. That's so lovely. Yeah, that's a treasure for a lifetime There is right there, but then and then but then then Hillary Clinton's emails famously were hacked. That's right. And when those were all released
Starting point is 00:44:02 Hillary Clinton's emails famously were hacked. That's right. And when those were all released. Yes, and on the internet. On the internet, you found this email. I did. From the secretary to one of her advisors. Would you read what she wrote? I would.
Starting point is 00:44:13 Shortly before that date that you got it? Of course. It says here. It says, a friend wants me to sign something for Julia Lewis Dreyfus for Veep. Any ideas? And he wrote back, let me brainstorm on this one, do some research. I confess, I haven't seen the show.
Starting point is 00:44:32 Now, that's not the thing I love most about it. What I love most about it was what you did with the two, is that, tell them what you did. Well, I put them in a frame together. And what is this? What does this represent for you? This represents to me, and I say this with all respect, of course, to Secretary Clinton, but this represents to me Washington, D.C., and really it's kind of a little Veep moment, in fact. It's what we were satirizing very sort of extremely on Veep.
Starting point is 00:45:15 Mike McClintock would have written this for you. Yes, it probably would have been more botched. I mean, she obviously handled it very elegantly. I've, but anyway, there you go. Now you know a lot about DC. You grew up in DC. I did. And was your family politically active?
Starting point is 00:45:31 Yes, my, yes, politically active, very involved, voting was sort of a safe, is a sacred act and certainly was demonstrated to be that in our family. And my dad was a big supporter of Democrats, and he was actually put on Nixon's enemies list. Wow. Yes, he was. That is something to be proud of. Yes, not only am I proud of it, but it is framed in my office right next to this puppy right here.
Starting point is 00:46:02 I have the same, the Nixon's, because they printed it in the newspaper, so I have it framed. Very proud. Julia, thank you so much for being here. Well, Stephen, how nice of you to shake my hand. Julia's conversation with the Democratic Women Governors is streaming live this Wednesday at The Link on her Instagram bio. Go check it out.
