Hey, young and profitors, welcome back to our YAP Snacks New Year special where we're
taking a look at past conversations from the year and we're seeing what secrets to
profiting in life we can uncover from some of the brightest minds in the world.
As you guys may know, the last question that I ask on all my interviews is what is your secret to profiting in life? And I don't send
any pre-prep to my guests. So this question really puts them on the spot and I get their true gut
reaction. And sometimes their response is related to their field of work and expertise and sometimes
I get a totally different insight based on their life experience.
Last week on the show, I covered one theme that I saw in all the responses after I evaluated
them, and it turns out that many of my guests said that the secret to profiting in life
was knowing your purpose, clearly defining your priorities and how you spend your time,
and then trying to enjoy the process all the while and not let your emotions get in the way, not get too stuck in the highs or the lows.
This week's theme has to do with love and service.
Love and service of humanity, love and service of other people, and love and service of yourself.
I think that Marcus Buckingham opens things up best with his response describing the African
philosophy of Ubuntu, a concept in which your sense of self is shaped by your relationships with other people.
Ubuntu is a way of living that begins with the premise I am only because we are.
René de Cart is often called the first modern philosopher, and I think many of you have heard his
famous saying, I think therefore I am. Renée is credited for laying the groundwork
for how we conceptualize our sense of self.
But what if there's an entirely different way
to think about personal identity,
a non-Western philosophy that rejects this emphasis
on individualism?
The Western philosophy says,
I think therefore I am, right?
Cogato Algozo, I think therefore I am. right? Cogato, I'll go some, I think
therefore I am. But there is an African philosophy called Ubuntu, which basically
says, no, we only exist in relation to other people. You're not out there by
yourself thinking. Everything isn't cognitive. It's not I think therefore I am, it's
I am because you are. We all exist in beautiful relationships to one another.
So my secret to profiting in life with me, but for you too and for your listeners would
be looked to your left and looked to your right because you are because of who they are.
Who are you moving through life with? That includes your life partner, the person you choose to do life with,
includes your colleagues. Your beautiful uniqueness is manifested not by itself.
It is manifested through the attention, the challenge, the curiosity of someone else
helping you to demystify yourself so that you can contribute.
So look to your left, look to your right, and remember that the goal of any great relationship
that you have in life is to make each one of you bigger.
And you should only surround yourself with people whose goal is to help you be bigger,
the biggest version of you,
not threatened by you, not blind to you, not controlling of you, not trying to be you.
The goal of any relationship is that that other person sees you and wants you to be bigger.
And I think the thing that I've learned in my life anyway, and I've done, my career
was a little bit like yours over the years.
Writing books, speaking, being individually productive, starting a company, having a
company grow like crazy, having another bigger company coming in by like, like, now I'm
here doing this with you.
It's been an interesting scavenger hunt for love.
But the biggest lesson I'm going to take from my life is that I am because you are.
And so who's the you in that sense?
Who am I
surrounding myself with? For every one of your listeners, they aren't in
Ireland, they're not by themselves, they're super connected. And so think very
carefully about who you're choosing to walk through life with. And if they're
wanting you to be bigger, hold on tight. Because that's the way I'm reaching
the full of life.
Man, that was so beautiful and there's something in there he said that really hit me hard.
And I'm going to resay it and I'm going to paraphrase it a bit
because it is so powerful.
I want you to hear this twice.
You should only surround yourself with people whose goal is to
help you be bigger.
And I mean the biggest version of you.
Not threatened by you, not blind to you,
not controlling of you, and not trying to be you.
Oh my gosh, that is so fire.
I think that is one of my favorite quotes
that I've heard on this podcast ever.
And when Matthew McConaughey joined
a young and profiting podcast in the beginning of 2021
back in episode number 101, he shared
a similar sentiment to Ubuntu in his response.
He explained how he makes decisions through the lens of not only what is serving his bank
account, but what is also serving his soul's account.
A place where he considers his immediate self and also how he can please the most amount
of people for the most amount of time.
As Matthew has said in the past, the ultimate pursuit is what are the decisions that are
best for me that are also the best for we?
Sometimes, it's a greater risk to go for something you want, and sometimes it's a greater risk
to sacrifice and say, no, I'm going to go without that. That's really another place
for the art I think of living is, and we've been talking about that generally in the
for the last 30 minutes. Try to can to say, okay, look, we all want to make money. Money's
good. It's a great tool. It does help the world go around.
And the capitalist side, we need money. I'm all for that. We want to fill our bank account.
But let's ask ourselves when we're when we're filling our bank account. Can I also fill my souls account at the same time? But if we find a way where we can fill our bank account and
souls account, where we don't fill our bank account at the expense of who we are or what we believe in.
We don't like cheating, stealing, screw people over
in verm bridges and to get what we want.
That's long money.
That's real profit.
I love this advice from Matthew,
and I found that it's helped me look at my life from a different perspective.
What am I considering to be important?
What am I considering to be the currency in my life?
And after taking a hard look back, I've realized that the best decisions I've made have been the ones that not only serve me,
but the decisions that serve my friends and family, my clients, my employees,
and the most rewarding success is when I succeed
with the community I've built.
But who is my community?
And who is your community?
Because like Marcus said, you need to surround yourself
with the right people, the people who want to see you win.
And it's no secret that you are the average
of the five people you spend the most time with.
That's probably the most commonly said self-improvement rule of thumb.
And as Warren Buffett once famously said, you want to associate with the people who are
the kind of people you'd like to be.
You'll move in that direction.
And the most important person by far in that respect is your spouse.
I can't overemphasize how important that is.
Mary the right person, and I'm serious about that.
My guest Greg McEwan from episode number 121 had a similar comment when I asked
his secret to profiting in life. What is your secret to
profiting in life? Well, the first answer that comes to me is my wife, Anna.
That is the answer to that question. I have very rarely made a poor
decision if we've spent time talking about it working together. She has uncommon, common
sense. She's really savvy, wicked, smart, but she's also just deeply good. And if you want
to talk about like residual results, I mean like marry the right person
is serious like we've heard that advice before I'm sure all of us have but that's seriously
good advice right. It's one decision that produces a thousand results and she's just like
the highest trust person I've ever met and so she is a secret for how to profit in life.
Aside from family, you can create your own support system by recruiting friends and mentors.
Dr. Maya Shankar, who guested on episode number 126, credits her secret to profiting in life
to the mentors that have helped her along the way.
I think building a really strong community of supporters around me.
I've been the beneficiary of so many incredible mentors in my life, and I try to
take forward by mentoring others, especially young women of color.
And I feel like in tough moments, or when we're feeling insecure, or feeling like we can't
accomplish that next goal, tapping into that community for strength and support and wisdom and warmth and
insights can really help who you and and help you get to that next phase.
Don't do it yourself or don't believe you have to do it all on your own.
Maya also alluded to service in her response. When she said she pays things
forward by mentoring other young women of color. As the late in Frank once said,
no one has ever become poor by giving. Giving, building relationships and prioritizing connection
is such a simple thing we all can do. When Dr. Mita Singh joined the show, she stressed the importance
of building strong relationships, claiming that when she can go the extra mile for others in her work and life, that's when she feels the most rewarded.
I would say having genuine relationships.
The kind of work that you and I do, Carla, it's all about building relationships.
Like I said, I have never advertised.
It's always when I work with somebody, I work, I give it my level best and then
maybe go beyond. And it's very rewarding. And I know that it, you know, somehow it will come back.
And even if it does, it's because it's rewarding, it's worth it.
Let's hold that thought and take a quick break with our sponsors.

John Gordon also reflects on service and his answer. He cites the main lesson from his
book, The Carpenter and his greatest success strategies of all. Love, serve, and care.
Focus on loving, serving, and caring,
and people will be drawn to you and your business.
When you love, serve, and care,
you not only change your heart and mind,
you change the hearts and minds
of the people around you.
My secret to profiting is, I would say,
it's the message from the carpenter, Three words, love, serve, and care.
I always say, don't focus on building your business.
Focus on loving, serving, and caring, and your business will
exponentially grow.
And if you invest in the love for your customers, for people,
your staff, your team, if you serve others,
it's about helping them grow. It's not about you. You coach them, you team, if you serve others, it's about helping them grow.
It's not about you.
You coach them, you guide them, you mentor them,
you make it simple and clear for them,
guide them along the way.
People want three things from you and your business.
Three things, make you clear and simple for me, right?
Coach me through the process and give me the confidence
on making the right decision.
This was from a client who spent millions of dollars
in market research to figure out what their customers wanted
and once they told me this at this big event
I was speaking at, I said, this is the same thing
every customer wants.
So make sure you're serving your customers, serving others
and we talked about showing that you care.
When you know someone cares about you,
you want to do business with them, you refer them
and tell everyone.
So for me, it's been, I do really care about people,
I love what I do, and I am here to serve.
I am here to serve.
As a result of that, my business has continues
to grow exponentially, but it's not all smooth rides, right?
You have to also stay positive, overcome the negativity
along the way with optimism and belief,
but ultimately the love, serving care
that drives you to do
what you do, and then you get the fruit of that by investing in the root.
This is so powerful what John is telling us. It all starts with love. When you love what
you do, you will embrace all the challenges, all the adversity, all the rejection. You will
keep doing what you love no matter the obstacles. Love keeps you in the game.
Love is also the best leadership and team building principle.
It's the best customer service strategy.
It's the best sales technique on the planet.
This advice of separating work from personal in my opinion is pure BS.
Love is what separates good from great.
Good teachers know their lesson plans, but great teachers
also take the time to get to know their students enough to love them. Good salespeople know how to
sell, but great salespeople also love their clients. And because you love and you have passion,
you serve. Service is simply love and action. It's this mentorship and
paying forward that Maya and John were both talking about. Great leaders don't succeed
because they're great. Great leaders succeed because they bring out the greatness and others.
You don't have to be great to serve, but you do have to serve to be great. And care was
John's last strategy. When you love and serve, you find ways to show that you care.
You go out of your way to make people feel important.
And when you care, you stand out in a world where it seems
like people don't give a damn.
You do more, you give more, you become more,
you create more people sense that you care
and they flock to your work.
The world takes notice, you inspire people.
And that's why this attitude of service helps you
to become young and profiting.
Love, service and care is not complicated, but that doesn't mean it's easy.
It's actually really easy to be scattered.
It's easy to only focus on the outcome instead of the process.
It's easy to focus on the numbers instead of the people.
That's the easy part.
The past to success is not easy, but it's simple.
Do what you love, serve others, show that you care.
But there's something else I want to call out
in all of this because before we can love others,
we need to love ourselves.
We need to learn to love ourselves.
How can you give love if you can't receive love?
So many of our guests last year stressed this.
They stressed the importance
of switching up our mindset to one of self love and acceptance. This one is pretty difficult
to embody. It's something that I've personally worked on all year and something I'll continue
to work on through 2022. And episode number one, 10 mindset coach Natasha Grano told me that
self love is her secret to profiting in life. Love yourself and always wake up every single day and save yourself.
How can I serve my audience today?
How can I take care of one person's needs today?
Because you just need validation from one person.
You just need to think of one person.
How can I serve them today? How can I better
somebody else's life? How can I use my knowledge, my skill set, everything I've been given
to serve my community? What would serve them better? That is the key to profiting because
money is a byproduct to success. Everything you want is a byproduct of that. So always look to
serve other people true manifestation is when you are serving others, you are
manifesting something for the benefit of others. And the legacy on this
planet, leaving a mark for people there after you that you are leaving it in a
better way than you came into it. For me and so many others, a key tool I use for better self-love is affirmations.
I love affirmations so much that I made a new YAP series called YAP Formations.
For anyone unfamiliar with the concept of affirmations, they are simply about making
positive statements to yourself in the present tense.
Some examples include, my bank account is full.
I attract abundance into my life.
I'm the most beautiful girl in the world.
Telling yourself affirmations can feel weird or awkward at first,
but they are so powerful.
And there's actually a lot of science behind why they work.
Studies have found that daily affirmations have led to a decrease in stress,
students achieving better grades, and they even help people eat healthier. I think
Muhammad Ali, known to be the greatest boxer of all time, put it best when he said,
I figured that if I said it enough, I would convince the world that I really was the greatest.
I had the pleasure to talk with world famous therapist, Merce Appier, and she says her secret to profiting in life is telling herself affirmations and telling herself
a better lie.
Well, I've got a new book coming out in October and it's called Tell Yourself A Better
Lie. And I guess that's one of my secrets. I realize that all my clients tell themselves
lies. My job is killing me. This commute is killing me. My bum is the size of Los Angeles.
I'm falling apart. This is a lie. If you are prepared to lie to yourself, tell yourself a better
lie. I'm smart. I'm amazing. I'm lovable. I'm mad. I've got something. I'm a good person.
I'm significant. So I think, you know, we all lie to ourselves. Oh, my life is a mess. I'm a good person. I'm significant. So I think, you know, we all lie to ourselves, oh,
my life is a mess, I'm a hot mess, I'm a train wreck. It's just about understanding that
your mind lets it in. So I think what stood me in very good stead is telling myself things
that we've probably seen as, starting off as an insecure
kid who was asked to leave college and then saying, I'm smart, I'm mad, I am loveable,
I'm worthy of a loving relationship, I'm worthy of someone adoring me, I'm worthy of
earning a lot of money, that was alive, you know, when I said it, it became true, I have
an amazing marriage. I wouldn't have even, my life now. I couldn't have imagined that life when I
was 17 or even 28. I couldn't have imagined having two homes and the life we have, the
love we have, the impact we make on people. And that's all because I began to tell myself
a better lie than the first lie, which is, I don't matter, I'm a geek, I'm stupid, I can't even have a baby.
That was the first lie, but I told myself a better lie and it's an amazing thing.
Our words carry so much power and when we can use them as a tool, there's no stopping what we can do.
The next step we can take to build on affirmations are manifestations. This is another secret to profiting in life that many of my guests
have brought up. Manifestation is when you put belief and intention behind
something that you desire. You can manifest anything, saving more money, a
dream career, or growing closer to someone that you love. For me in the beginning
of 2021, I said that I would quit my job.
I said I would become an entrepreneur.
I said I would double the size of my company,
start a podcast network, quite droop of the number of clients
that I have, get into a department,
and everything that I set out to do
in the beginning of the year, I accomplished.
I manifested everything because manifestation
and visualization is extremely powerful.
Last year, Sarah Centrella, a manifestation expert, explained to me why she believes so strongly
in removing limiting beliefs so you can receive abundance in life.
I would say two things. One, identifying that you do want
One, identifying that you do want whatever it is. Something better, more money, the career, the job,
whatever the thing is.
So getting to a place where you allow yourself to want it
is really big.
And then the second piece that has been really
pivotable for me, especially when it comes
to financial manifestations and abundance manifestations,
is removing some of those limiting beliefs,
like identifying what they are and changing them. And instead of kind of putting those into the world
or lack of beliefs into the world, really changing those into abundance ones. So I think
kind of putting those two pieces together for me has just changed everything when it comes to
you know, profiting and becoming more abundant in general in all areas of my life.
We'll be right back after a quick break from our sponsors.

Yet media blew up so fast, it was really hard to keep everything under control,
but things have settled a bit, and I'm really focused on revamping and improving our company culture.
I have 16 employees, so it's a lot of people to try to rally and motivate,
and I recently had best-selling author Kim Scott on the show.
And after previewing her content in our conversation, I just knew I had to take her class on masterclass,
tackle the hard conversations with radical candor to really absorb all she has to offer.
And now I'm using her radical candor method every day with my team to give
insolicit feedback, to cultivate a more inclusive culture, and to every day with my team to give in solicit feedback, to cultivate
a more inclusive culture, and to empower them with my honesty.
And I can see my team feeling more motivated and energized already.
They are really receptive to this framework, and I'm so happy because I really needed
this class.

A lot.
But with Masterclass annual memberships,
it just costs you $10 a month. I have to say the most surprising thing about
Masterclass since I started this incredible journey on the platform is the value. For
the quality of classes, instructors, the platform itself is beautiful, the videos are super
high quality, you can't beat it. Gain new skills and as little as 10 minutes on your phone,
your computer, tablet, smart TV,
and my personal favorite way to learn
is their audio mode to listen on the go.
That way I can multitask while I learn.
Get unlimited access to every class
and right now as a app listener,
you can get 15% off when you go to masterclass.com-profiting.
That's masterclass.com-profiting
for 15% off an annual membership. masterclass.com slash profiting for 15% off an annual membership.

Self love is easier said than done.
And it's something that I know that many people struggle with.
If you're in a place today where you don't love yourself,
it's hard to take that giant leap and become somebody who does.
But just like when you're building muscles in the gym, self-love just takes constant practice. Life is full of ups and downs.
Health can quickly turn into disease. Success can be turned into failure. Romantic love can change
into coldness. So no matter what happens on the outside, we have to have a solid foundation
built on self-love on the inside.
Self-love isn't a luxury, it's actually a necessity.
And when you care for yourself, you care for this world
and your actions have a ripple effect on others.
Take a listen to some of the past episodes with Marissa
and Sarah and put their advice into action
because as they say, practice makes perfect,
even when it comes to your self-love.
On episode number 114, neuroscientists Dr. Caroline Leif spoke about the power of self-love and
mind management and why that's her secret to profiting in life.
Mind management without a doubt is it's all driven by mind. So everything is driven by mind. So that's the, without managing your mind,
your life is just a Mason.
From there, it's just a natural profiting
in everything relationships, yourself, peace,
finances, business, et cetera.
And you also get better perspective.
You don't look at anything, I don't look at anything
as an external thing to bring into me.
Everything's from inside art, because it's mind out. And then you've much more accepting of everything that happens.
And I have goals and visions obviously, but they're not external that I'm trying to get
in. I'm growing from the inside out.
Dr. Caroline Leif touched on something we briefly discussed last week on YAPSNACs, and that's perspective.
Framing how we see things in an optimistic or positive way is a quick hack
to finding new appreciation in our life.
In 2021, there were many moments for me that were saved by having a positive outlook. The most memorable one was losing my first client at YAP media.
I always took pride in the fact that in the 18 months of
business, we never lost a client. In December, for the first time, we lost a client. I actually had
to let the client go. It was a client who didn't appreciate us. They weren't paying us for many
months. They expected us to continue services. They were hurting the morale of my team with their constant complaints and negativity.
And still, letting go of my first client felt like a big loss, like I had failed.
And I was really upset at first and very down and stressed.
But then I realized that this actually was a blessing in disguise.
It gave me time to focus on my other clients who actually treated us nice and appreciated
our hard work.
It boosted the morale of my team because they no longer had to deal with this constant
negativity and most importantly, losing all that constant weekly drama gave me more
time for myself and my brand and my podcast.
And I know that my time and focus is worth a lot and my time and focus can change the
world. And your time and focus can change the world.
And your time and focus can change the world.
And even though my company took a hit financially,
because we didn't get paid for many months
for a very big client,
I actually found some positive
in something that could have been a negative.
I could have easily let that put a damper
on the end of my year.
I could have easily been discouraged
and let that setback hold
me back. But instead, I decided to change my perspective about it. I decided to put all the
team members who were working on that client that I let go, and now they're working on my stuff
so that I can double down on myself and invest in myself. I took a look on the bright side.
I looked forward and I decided not to look back.
This is something that so many people touch on
with their secret to profiting in life on my podcast,
whether that's directly or in passing.
It's finding meaning in both the success
and failure that you go through.
Turn your negatives into a positive.
Turn your losses into lessons.
Author Donald Miller explained to me why
finding and experiencing meaning is more important to him than professional or
even financial success. Secret to profiting in life is understanding for me
personally that life is more about experiencing meaning than it is about being
successful. And I take Victor Frankl's advice when he talks about
experiencing meaning.
He has a three-part formula.
The first is a project that you work on
that hopefully is sacrificial and helps other people.
An optimistic or redemptive perspective
on all challenges that you face, even tragedies.
And share your life with others.
The formula that Donald presented is exactly what I try to do here with YAP.
I started this podcast to help people learn from the brightest minds in the world.
And through YAP, I can also share myself and my journey with so many people in real time.
All of our young and profitors out there can grow and evolve with me.
And that's what makes this all worthwhile.
I want to end my conversation with psychologist, author and Holocaust survivor, Dr. Edith Eager.
She explained by prioritizing personal evolution has been her secret to living a long and profitable life.
Just keep walking.
Just keep evolving.
And keep forgiving. just keep evolving and keep giving and keep being the true self.
And I think this is a wonderful time for people to discover the true self, the genuine self
that you gave up early on.
And the question is, when did your childhood end?
And go find that little girl in you and tell her,
I'm never gonna leave you and to be able to carry
that little beautiful child with you,
who is really so happy that you're going to be
the caring, loving mom to you and tell that little girl, you're the only one.
I am always inspired by Dr. Edith Eager. Everything she says is so full of wisdom and our conversation was certainly no exception.
Having a desire or even a hunger to grow and evolve is the cherry on top to this concept of self-love that we've been building in this episode. And when we're finally able to reach true self-love, giving love and kindness and serving
others becomes second nature. The secrets to profiting in life that we've recapped over the last few
weeks only scrapes the surface to a myriad of lessons that we've learned in 2021 from all of our
amazing guests each and every week.
When it comes to being young and profiting,
you need to first build off the foundation of Ubuntu.
I am because we are.
You need to make decisions that are not only good for yourself,
but also serve the people in your life as well.
You need to surround yourself with the people
who want you to be the biggest version of yourself.
You need to show love, be of service, and care for others.
And you not only need to care about others,
you also need to care about yourself.
You need to love yourself.
As we start off the new year,
I wanna thank all of our young and profitors out there
for tuning in each and every week.
Everything we do here is for you
and seeing you all share, our show, review it,
and learn from it makes it all so rewarding. I hope you all can take our lessons that we've learned
in 2021 and bring them into 2022 and make it your best year yet. I know you will and I know I will.
